Does anyone else notice this?

As the band has progressed through the years, it seems to me that they lose their "patience" with songs. Especially since Tim has joined the band, just about every song has sped up, some much faster than they previously were (grey street, last stop, pnp>rapunzel). Can you imagine if songs like crazy easy actually got liberated? They would probably race through it. Personally, although it was great hearing songs like last stop get brought back last year, no version tops those such as Chicago or the Central Park Bonus Disk. Im not sure if its the band trying to fit more songs into a show now, or if they feel like this is for the best. Thoughts?

I remember this very thing being discussed long before Tim was a member of the band. Back on nancies.org it was a topic of discussion. On here it has been, year after year. So I say no, I don't think they have lost their patience with songs and I don't feel like they are rushing things to fit more in, as you say. I think that over time songs are going to evolve and that evolution sometimes results in a song speeding up and sometimes it slows down. Just my opinion of course.

That is the best version of Last Stop in my opinion...I actually love Butch on this version b/c of the keyboard sound effects in the outro...chills!

I always thought this too. I feel it just wouldn't be as good if played fast and w/out Butch, but that's just my opinion.

Talent-wise, I completely agree w/ you. But, for me, I liked DMB's sound a little more with foundational Butch (2000-2004). Don't get me wrong though, DMB is still currently my favorite band and I still listen to them constantly.

Just didn't like how it slowed things down to a halt. Butch actually made me not want to hear two step at a show.

This. Butch was good but he made some of their best songs boring at times. That doesn't happen now.

I just want to be able to hear Dave's guitar in a show/tapes/releases...that's one of the main things I like about DMB- Dave's unique acoustic guitar riffs. But, I agree with Two Step becoming too slow with Butch, in later years (2005-2007), I didn't like Butch then either. Central Park Two Step is so good w/ Butch though.

A lot of the new material this band comes out with its only tolerable in live setting because of Tim. So it's not really at a cost at all.

Tim absolutely ruins the old stuff. And I find all the new stuff un-listenable anyway.

Why does he just pick up an acoustic guitar.

And Butch was so quite it was almost like he wasn't there.

IMO the last few live releases have been ruined, for me at least, by shredding electric guitar that drowns out the acoustic sound. Lots of this on the Atlantic City release. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Tim Reynolds, but electric guitar on every song? Come on, man.

I think Proudest Monkey is the only song that has slowed down over the years. Everything else is sped up. It's a shame...

I do agree that songs like Bartender and Two Step speeding up with Tim make them better and more fun at shows. It seems like as time has gone on Tim has gone from adding in small fills, such as at a D+T show, to completely playing Dave's riffs, and then much more as well. No wonder Dave hardly plays anymore.

tim overpowers all songs he's on.

i'd like it if he only guested on 3-5 songs a night.

Foundational Butch has become an actual term around here

So now we're unhappy about the songs that suck, but also unhappy with the songs that we like because the pace of them is wrong? Just to be clear, are there any songs left that we're allowed to like?

    This place is so awesome.

It's not always Tim's fault, but in a situation like the LT13 Ants Marching, I really didn't like his input. The reason I like Ants Marching is because it has that bluegrassy/jam type feel to it, and Tim decided he'd overpower the whole thing.

Of course. It's the only relevant topic outside of setlist discussion.
