well for what it's worth, near the start of the series the writers straight up said "we will NOT be having a whole will/won't they romance for these two just because that's what you do in television, you have a man and a woman lead who are both single and attractive, and hook them up because reasons". I was absolutely in favor of that.
and they wound up having them together because they honestly felt after a certain point that's where the characters were telling them they wanted to go. And I absolutely bought it, it felt 100% natural to me. Call me naive, maybe
but that's how it all progressed
Also, it's very interesting to hear you say that about the end. Because they were one of the few TV shows who got to do their ending with full awareness. I mean we knew into the offseason the last couple years, it was very touch and go due to the ratings. But then after 4 (which if I recall did have an ending that could've functioned as a sufficient finale) they 100% knew going into it, network says okay you're back, but only 13 shows, so it was constructed top to bottom as the ending they wanted. I haven't watched any of those episodes since original airing, I should do a rewatch soon, I liked it.
