Still hoping Jason releases some more tour dates, I want to see him get closer to Chicago again.

I'm going to see these guys for the first time next weekend. I'm pretty excited. I literally just woke up a few days ago and was like "I wanna get into DBT."

Dude, enjoy the ride. A live show is a great way to get a good intro. Once you go down the DBT rabbit hole, it's a fun place to explore. Their catalog is so deep, so consistently strong, and such a rewarding listen. They're a great band to 'discover.'

I love their music so much because it gets better and better the more attention to pay to it - getting into the stories they tell and the themes they explore. They are just incredible, passionate songwriters. The fact that a guy as crazy talented as Jason Isbell was 'the other guy' in this band tells you a lot.

As a bonus, I know you're into vinyl, their entire catalog sounds PHENOMENAL on wax. They pretty much always record straight to analog tape and their records are phenomenally well mastered.

Jason Isbell is how I decided to get into them. I've been listening to him more lately and read about the 400 Unit. After hearing them, I thought I really need to dig into their catalog but I want to see them first.

And that's awesome to hear about the wax! Make my wallet even smaller than it already is!

Sounds like the reports are true that this will be a more electric album. That will help him mix up the tempo at his live shows.

There's an amazing show that you can find on archive.org from a couple years back where Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, and Jason Isbell got back together for one night to do an acoustic show for charity that is a really amazing listen. They just trade off doing tunes and telling stories, magical show.

Isbell has done it again, this is some of his best work. I have seen the phrase hauntingly beautiful used on this site many times, but this song truly is.

Looks like this album is shaping up to be another gem.

I held out until I could listen to the album in it's entirety, and with NPR streaming it now, I went through it twice last night.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it certainly holds it's own with the previous two albums. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more of a rocker, since that was my expectations going in to it after the early articles on it.

10000% this. He is truly great and I cannot believe the same man has written Goddamn Lonely Love, Cover Me Up, Flagship, and now If We Were Vampires.

I definitely really like the new Isbell although it's oddly a tad disappointing to me at the same time. I definitely expected something a bit more rocking and the second half of the album isn't quite as good as the first imo but it's still really strong. Vampires is just unreal. I'm really excited to see the songs live in 2 weeks, I think they're going to come through really well in that setting.

for sure! Even though it's a bit less of a rocker than I anticipated, there are definitely some tunes that will inject more energy into the sets. The last 2 albums have great material (especially Southeastern) but I found the shows to be a tad "samey" for lack of a better word. Stuff like Cumberland, WMW, Anxiety, and Hope the High Road will diversify and pep things up for sure.

Have to say, he really did it again. This album is fantastic. After a few listens I really like this album. I will agree to an extent with those who said they were expecting a few more rockers, but that doesn't translate to any lost feelings for me. I think If We Were Vampires is one of the best written songs I have heard in a long time. I am looking forward to hearing Anxiety live, I could see this very easily taking the place of Children of Children as a show closer with the guitar solos.

Last of My Kind along with Chaos and Clothes have stuck out to me as great songs on the quieter side. Really think these songs stack up well to his overall body of work and make great additions to the live shows.

Within seconds of hearing Last Of My Kind for the first time, I thought of John Prine. It stands to reason that he posted on his social media today that it was one of his favorite songs along with If We Were Vampires, Chaos and Clothes, and Something To Love.

I picked up Sirens Of The Ditch on vinyl along with the new album today. I do wish he would play some of those older tunes on Here We Rest, the self titled record and Sirens Of The Ditch. He's a different kind of artist now than he was back then, but there are some damn good songs from that era.

I'm going to be in the minority I guess that isn't blown away by Jason's new album. Grain of salt, I've only listened to it 3 times so far, but it's just not knocking me out. It's weird, because they're all good songs, there's nothing here that I can say is *bad* but Jason's songwriting is all kind of starting to blend together for me, it all feels really one-note.

I definitely agree with this. I can't totally put my finger on it but it's just a bit of a let down to me. Despite the fact that I would also say that it is absolutely a good album. Something is just missing to push it over the top, and I'm not feeling as compelled to revisit these songs as much as I expected to. I am seeing him tonight though, which I fully expect to be a good time.

New Isbell album is so vanilla it hurts. Alex said it best...Jason hasn't really brought anything new to the table here especially melodically or lyrically. Even the most mediocre of SMTF is way more interesting than anything on this album.

Yeah....vanilla is a good way to describe it. I just listened to it again this morning all the way through and I still feel the same. There's a few that I really like (White Man's World, Hope the High Road) but I was really hoping for more variety and something a bit different from Southeastern/SMTF. This just feels like more of the same.

Again, not BAD by any stretch but...it doesn't make me want to go back to it. Right from the start with Last of My Kind...that's the kind of song I feel like he can write in his sleep at this point.

Seems most people are saying it's his strongest album thus far, and I tend to agree. It just has so much re-listening quality.

I actually enjoy it but that blows my mind. It's not even in the same ballpark as Southeastern.

I agree that it has the same feel as Southeastern and SMTF, but I see that as a positive rather than a negative. Isbell doesn't need to reinvent himself every album. He has found something that works, being a top-notch folk songwriter. He's never going to be the rocker that he was in DBT. We see this all the time with other bands, too. DMB is not going to be 1998 or 2000 or 2004 DMB again. John Mayer isn't going back to the blues. The only guy I can think of off the top of my head that can change his game at the drop of a hat and still stay on top is Jack White.

Oh definitely to each their own, I'm glad people are enjoying it, it just hasn't really hit me the way I hoped it would. It's a perfectly pleasant listen, it just doesn't engage me.

To be honest, he wasn't even that much of a rocker in DBT. Songs like Outfit, Decoration Day, Danko Manuel, Goddamn Lonely Love, etc, while they have some edge, they're kind of mid tempo songs. Maybe just more electric than acoustic, but I wouldn't say he was constantly writing these barn burning rock tunes. Songs like Never Gonna Change have always been a bit of the exception for him. I think he does what he does now so well, that a part of me wants to see him step a bit more out of the comfort zone because there are a number of songs on this record that while they are undoubtedly good, you can't help but feel they're tunes he could easily just fart out in his sleep. The term safe comes to mind for me. Which again, isn't inherently a bad thing because he's great at what he does, and obviously it's working to grow his cache and fanbase, so what the hell do I know.
