I think ANY team that fires a coach after less than 3 seasons (assuming no scandals) has not given them a fair shake.

Anyone who watched FSU play a game under Taggart knows he was an awful coach. He had ONE good season at USF for his entire career. The guy is clown shoes bad.

Here’s what my high school coach (who coached Pope) had to say this morning about what when down yesterday.

People shouldn't talk about things they know nothing about. Expect it from the haters, but not our own. Don't agree with how it went down and wish he'd done things differently but you have no idea what led up to this, he's done everything asked of him for four years, he knew what he was going into and that he would have to bide his time, could have left years ago easily, but stayed and kept working and was a good teammate. When he got an opportunity to play, he played hard and made plays, as he has always done and it wasn't just me, EVERYONE saw this. As a coach there is a common rule that you are taught to go by, you DON'T tell players before the game during the week they're going to play and then not follow through on it, your honest with them and tell them the truth. If your not going to play them then why go up and tell him that game after game week after week, this guy loves the game and loves to play he is one of the truest competitors I've ever coached, so I understand his frustration. And this is not about last night, this has BEEN going on all year and there is just so much you can bite your lip on. I'm not making excuses for what went down, I wish for all involve this would have went down differently, but I do understand 81 and I love you and got your back. And all of you that sit up in those stands for 4 years and celebrated all this guy did for Navy nation, you need to pray for this young man not speculate.

Interesting for sure, and I assumed there was more to it. That being said, people know what they saw and that coach shouldn’t be surprised by people speaking Ill of Pope. He walked away from his team in the middle of a game.

Ryan Day just announced Pope has been dismissed from the team lol. You can’t fire someone after they quit.

If the season ended today my playoff teams would probably be:

    1. Bama
    2. Georgia
    3. Oregon
    4. Either Arkansas or Penn State (probably Arkansas as I think the Wisconsin team Penn State beat is pretty bad after watching them against ND this weekend).

Random thought: you know who might be a good hire at USC - Pat Fitzgerald. I'd like to see what that guy could at a program with an abundant of resources.

Very very good slate of games this Saturday. A few high profile games that could be the best of the early season and even the next tier of games are solid matchups.

another B1G West coach, kirk ferentz. i never understood why no one tried to pull him away from iowa. does he have a lifetime contract there or something? i feel like if he can do what he does at iowa with a bunch of 3 stars, he could steamroll a conference at a place like USC.

Ferentz is a great coach. He’d be a terrible fit at USC.

I feel like Ferentz is basically forgotten about during his 7-5 seasons and then receives ungodly praise for his coaching abilities during his 10+ win seasons that seem to occur like clockwork once every 5 years.

His consistency and lack of bad seasons is definitely impressive, he definitely has a system figured out that works for Iowa’s expectations. I too think he would be terrible at USC.

He's fallen off a bit the past couple years but he was routinely paid some of the highest in CFB for those 10+ wins that seems to occur like clockwork when they don't have to play the top B1G teams.

Really hoping we can beat Georgia. Not thinking we will, but I've been pleasantly surprised with us this year so far. Pittman has been amazing at turning our sunken ship around.

Is there any logical reason that Cincy is favored over ND this weekend in South Bend?

I’m by no means confident and I wouldn’t bet on ND Cincy, and I don’t think we are that great this year, but most advanced stats I look at have ND and Cincy as almost equal; throw in the game being at ND and I don’t think we lose our 4 year undefeated home game streak to an AAC team whose QB is chirping about how the stadium won’t be loud for long once he gets going.

I threw ND ML into a parlay. It's good juice. Not going to underestimate how much Kelly wants to beat his old program.

Because it would be an embarrassment to lose to a mid major at home? A program he left to get to a "big boy" job. A program that he helped build into an upper echelon mid major and gain national recognition by making New Years 6 bowls.

Just seems like a big spot for him to make a statement on this season. Maybe I'm off base here.

I think you are off base - I don't think he has any extra motivation because he used to work there. I don't think he left on bad terms. If anything, the motivation is being a home underdog to a non power 5 team. ND hasn't looked great, except for the 4th quarter last week, but the line is off. Should be ND -3.

He did tell his team that he wasn't leaving and then bailed right before the Sugar Bowl against the Tebow Gators. I wouldn't say that is great terms. But i agree on the line being off. ND -2.5/3 is where I would have guessed it to land.

I certainly hope Brian Kelly didn't need extra motivation this week in the form of his opponent being a school he worked at 12 years ago and then willingly left.

If he did need it then I'm glad it's there because every bit of motivation helps I guess, but that would be pretty weird.
