Best Studio Captain

Searched and didn't find a poll on this in the past. Which version of Captain do you prefer, the Lillywhite Sessions version or the Busted Stuff version?

I feel like most people prefer the LS version, but I'm partial to the BS version. I like the faster pace, and the background instruments really seem to pop more--it just sounds like there's more going on there. Of course, these may well be the same reasons many people prefer the LS one; it is certainly more muted and subdued and therefore (to me, at least) has a slightly different emotional tone to it, but I don't think it fits the lyrics as well. I do miss Boyd's awesome solo from the LS version. It may just come down to the fact that the BS version had the benefit of a final mix/master. But I prefer the BS Captain.

I agree with you OP, the faster pace sounds a lot better to me as well. I heard Busted Stuff before I heard the sessions, so maybe i'd feel differently if i heard the sessions version first, George Clinton and Bill Bush kinda thing.

This could be one of the most absurd things I've ever read on Ants. The BS version of Captain is one of DMB's biggest fails in the studio ever. It is a shell of what it was on tLWS. Captain from the Sessions is one of the most haunting pieces of music this band ever accomplished in the studio.

I strongly disagree with this. The lyrics alone are drastically different in subject, tone, mood, and, IMO, quality. I think the music on the Busted Stuff version is also pretty cheesy.

The LWS version is much more ambiguous, which is a quality of Dave's lyrics that I like. It can be about whatever you want--God, a woman, a friend, etc. The BS version is an incredibly straightforward lusty "love" song.

I went with the both option, but it's a little overstated. I like both versions of the song. I don't love both versions, I prefer some of the live ones more. I know tLWS version is better, but I like them equally.

Lyrics were better. Vocals were wayyyy better... depressing, creepier. The music was very different. Completely different vibe and sound with the breakdown in the middle with Roi and Boyd blasting right into "why should I, be hypnotized?" A great studio cut... I can only imagine if we had a produced CD quality version of that cut.

I would skip over Captain before Where Are You Going? on a listen through Busted Stuff. Buts thats just my opinion

LWS Captain can be interpreted as being about suicide and BS is basically a straightforward "I want you" kind of song.

Here are the last few stanzas for each version of the song.

LWS Captain:

I enjoy Lillywhite more because of the raw edge it has. But I enjoy the older versions called Crazy about the same. But speaking of Lillywhite Sessions I suggest giving Monkey Man a listen if you havent heard it in a while. It had been a couple of years for me and it came on Slacker Radio the other day and I enjoyed it.

I do prefer the Busted Stuff version of the LWS version. I have stated my reasons on many threads. I am not a giant fan of the lyrics on the LWS, and I don't like it being so slow and mellow. I liked the BS and Crazy progressions.

I have also stated that my preferred version is Crazy.
