Re: What the hell is an "Alternate Format?"

It wouldn’t shock me if someone on DMB’s touring crew knew how to play bass (Lawlor maybe?). Buddy can play drums. They can ditch the organ for a couple shows.

As much as I was impressed with Buddy this weekend, I missed this monster on stage watching the streams. I got to set it back up today, and it's closer than ever at the moment!

Tony Hall doesn't have another show (with Dumpstaphunk, at least) until 9/17.

That’s the replica you showed off that DMB retweeted right? I’m so jealous.

Yeah! They posted it everywhere. They've done every update since 2015 or so I do. Pretty amazing! I think since they don't have any on the website constant kit updates anymore, I've become the unofficial keeper of that info lol. Honored to say the least!

Tony doesn't play until SPAC N1, it's logical to assume he will go with DMB until Stefan and Carter return.

A fair amount of the instrument techs in the industry are musicians with a decent to high level of skill on the instrument. That does not, however, mean they are ready or comfortable taking the stage and filling in for their bosses...it's a HUGE step.

I'd imagine playing in front of 20k+ people when you're not a professional musician would be terrifying.

Per stories about Robert Palmer, Peter Gabriel, and lots of others, appreantly it can be terrifying to do even when you are a professional that regularly plays in front of massive crowds...

For example, see Dave's nervousness playing YNK solo the other night.

Or the story Roi wore sunglasses to help with stage fright. He could close his eyes and the crowd would never know.

They should just play D&T until they can put the band back together. Or D&T with some horns. No reason to complicate and confuse things so much.

I disagree. If I was attending an upcoming show that Carter and Fonz can't play in I'd be hoping to see the D&F alternate setup show. That would be such a cool experience. Obviously I'd rather a full DMB lineup show but if that isn't possible the most interesting option is the D&F thing they pulled off at the Gorge.

For SPAC I'd like to get as many DMB songs as possible whatever the format needs to be, feel like that's reasonable

I'd love to see a bit more variations of the lineup. Like Dave and Jeff Dave and Jeff on the Maker, Typical, Long Black Veil etc... Or Dave and Buddy. I think there's a bit more to explore there. Doesn't have to be more than a song or two but before or after the DMB iteration would be cool.

Excited for the next few shows assuming they happen. I think they've got 3 under their belts now. They've had time to rest a couple days and decide what they want the next 10 days or so to look like...

I think I'm with Turbo on this one. What they did at Gorge, spur of the moment to keep the train on the tracks was impressive and I would have liked to have been there to experience it.
But now that they're going forward with that lineup as the plan, knowing I'll be getting a dozen covers, I'm much less excited for Denver than I would be if it were just D&T. Actually thinking of cancelling.

SPAC has no openers correct? If they are still alternate format at that time I imagine something like Denver said below would be the case and it would be amazing

This would be awesome. First few songs Dave solo. Then Buddy comes out for a duet on a few. Jeff out after that. Tim next. Then any and all combos playing all or mostly all DM/DMB tunes. Would be really cool.

Oh yeah I'd love that, if it's still alternate format for SPAC it may be the closest I ever come to seeing a Dave solo show so I'd love a bunch of solo songs then mixing up the lineups

If I hadn't been to a show yet I'd want my DM(B) fix after 2 years. But I'd prefer something like what Denver said than D&F. D&T is a phenomanal option but I think I'd prefer something truly unique that utilizes the rest of the band in some way over a traditional D&T set.

I realize this has nothing to do with DMB but I always think that quote is entertaining.

If Carter is asymptomatic, I'm 99% confident he'll be able to test negative prior to SPAC. With Fonz having symptoms, I am still confident (based on the timeline), but you never know.

I'd rather DMB sans Carter and Fonz than the D&F thing. And at least 98% of that is also based on a million times yes to DMB (& Dave) tunes only.

This is somewhat selfish as I saw D&F back in the day. It was excellent, despite how wasted Dave and Trey were, but now my preference is for as much of the band as possible in all cases. Prefer the drum & bass-less notion of DMB to solo Dave or D&T as well.

Re: What the hell is an "Alternate Format?"

Wow, so much hate for covers in this thread

I really like covers for bands to pay homage to their influences and introduce me to artists I might not otherwise have checked out.

E.g., without DMB covering "The Maker" or "For the Beauty of Winona", would I be aware of Daniel Lanois? (Maybe as a producer, but probably not as an songwriter.)

And the big boisterous jam covers that everyone knows can make it easy for sit-ins but also contribute to a party atmosphere at a show. Would I want a whole set of that? Nah. Do I think the balance of that at the Gorge shows was appropriate? Yes.
