Re: the (2021) summer so far

Starting to think Carter’s age could benefit the bands sound. I was just watching a video of Sweet Up and Down and couldn’t believe how controlled he kept himself. He stuck to the bell on the ride throughout the chorus and jam as opposed to the wall of crashes and chinas he’s been going to the last 10+years when he gets excited. Him slowing down and playing with more control means everyone in the band will too. This might have me more excited than anything. Looking forward to my 40th birthday in Gilford next month!

Call me crazy but that version of sweet is the highlight so far for me. The song has grown on me a lot since day 1 plus the jam it just sounds great.

Pumped about a couple rarities and third verse.

Be realistic people, haven’t played together they had to stick to majority songs they are most familiar with. As the tour goes based on the first two shows I think they will really mix it up like they did a few years back.

I do agree that Dave is making things so much harder on himself with the singing. Dave you can add pieces here and there but an entire song isn’t working for anyone just tone it back a bit.

Is there a single thing you enjoy about their sound after 2004?

So I might not go as far as saying it’s the best they’ve sounded in years, but I’ll say there’s more I’ve seen and heard over the course of the last two days to get more excited than I’ve been in many years.

    Their sound is tight.

    Their musicianship is excellent.

I wish they’d play less tight, but the instrumentation is the best part of the shows by far.

It crazy how the bands taping policy seems to be a double edge sword. I listened to the SiriusXM broadcast and loved it. I thought to myself “wow, what a great show!”. Then on my morning run this morning I decided to listen to SPAC 2004 show and thought to myself “wow, I would give anything to go back in time and see this show”. Not sure exactly what I’m trying to say….maybe it’s that it’s probably not fair to compare years but then again it’s hard not to compare years. Maybe we are really luck to witness the band change over time even if you don’t like the change. I’d love a repeat of the 2004 SPAC set list at the next show but I also have excepted we won’t get it no matter how much we bitch and complain. I also realize there is a pretty big chunk of the fan base that would prefer last nights set list over a 2004 SPAC.

I’m amazed people still compare DMb in 2021 to some other time. How long does it take yall to get over ex girlfriends/wives?

Love the bands sound right now for the record.

One big thing I noticed that I hope more people are appreciating is Buddy comping more Boyd parts. If you listen to the taper pull for Raleigh's Grey Street, you can hear him doing Boyd's line at the end going into the jam. It was very cool!

They sound excellent. Carter still has it and didn't lose a step during the time off. Like another user mentioned it his control will keep everyone in line. Dave's voice sounds great. Fonz is killer.

Treating this opening run as a 2 nighter was great. Only slight negative was Shake Me closer especially with Ants and Two Step on the bench.

But it was great to back concerts again. My soul needed it!

I guess it depends on when you became a fan. I started going to shows in the mid 90's who used to make fun of the 40 something year old people there. Now i am that person!!!!! The band, sets and sound has evolved. Personally i would take an earlier years set to a later. You always got great songs although their catalog was not as big of course. I miss the days when this band was on top of the world, selling out 3 nights in a row at a football stadium. I think their ultimate was Central Park and seemed as if things changed (Everyday had a lot to do with that) Songs i heard back then were in regular rotation where now i am lucky to hear them. So i will continue to cherish however long they are in top form cause it will not last

But, it doesn’t. A lot of bands don’t sound better year after year. This band continues to improve and sound great.

The issue for most is, simply put, they’re different now than they were in 1991. They went from 1 album to 10 (11 counting Dave solo). They lost two original members.

Mathematically, if Dave was to be even and fair every night, we’d get 2 songs from each album. That’s a stretch to get a song you like. Chances are he won’t be fair like that so then it gets even more out of wack (BW in Charlotte)

Bottom line, the band is still playing and having fun. The crowds are having fun.

For the few hardcores that don’t like it or leave halfway through, that’s fine. But then I’d suggest just stop listening.

This is what the band is now. And I think it’s great.

(And this wasn’t directed at you directly. Just general comments)

Hate that we have to talk about a verse to a song that was part of the original composition as a "rarity." But God is it good to see it back. Completes the song, probably my favorite verse of the song, and makes the tension th song builds to in the last chorus all the better. The audible roar from the crowd in Raleigh was awesome to go with it. Listened to it 3 times, got chills every time.

Agree. They don’t sound like DMB and that’s all that matters to me at this point in my life. This is why I’ve become far more interested in what they can do in the studio than their live shows. Here’s to hoping the new album can bring more than Come Tomorrow

As well as a saxophone player that far better resembles LeRoi’s tone. Jeff’s sound just doesn’t fit the band that I fell in love with even when he’s just playing Roi’s parts

When I scored them I was surprised that Charlotte ended up lower. The highs were higher for me last night. SUAD, YNK, Raven but there were more 0, -1 last night as well.

posted this elsewhere but I absolutely love the seek up intro with this lineup. buddy adds a lot of harmonic depth and rashawn and jeff have the ears and chops to play off him extremely well.

I noticed in a few spots on Friday that Buddy has clearly spent some time with the studio recordings and grabbed a few things verbatim.
