Re: What the hell is an "Alternate Format?"

I like most of DMB's covers. But when we're talking like 5 in a set, I'm less excited to get on a plane to go see them.

I do not enjoy covers as a general rule. Outside of their classic covers I'd much prefer DMB play their own songs. If I were at the Gorge this past weekend I wouldn't have cared about covers given the circumstances

"Classic" covers had to be new covers at one point.

This. I like a lot of their covers, but I'd prefer one, maybe two at the most, during a show.

Especially since we know which covers they are going to be now.. at least last weekend it was all a surprise.. but we’ll get some sly and family stone, any of the Dave and friends covers, and satisfaction, sledgehammer

Its the case of having to only like the old stuff to be cool around the message boards. Sledgehammer & Thank You are as old or older a cover as Watchtower was when they first debuted. I'd say they be "classic" covers now.

No, I don't want to see a ton of covers at a show. But, I admit they do most of them very well. Some of them they just play A LOT. Doesn't mean DMB does a bad job at it. Just means you're tired of it. There are "classic" DMB originals like that too

Spot on. We all know they should put Jimi on the shelf for a couple years

    wait did I miss something?

I mean obviously the next week or two will be kind of touch and go, but they should be in the clear by Fiddler’s Green… right?

My brain first went to the 2008 tour, which was very cover-heavy. (12 different ones played! More than the number of different songs played from any one DMB album.)

Paging through each show on that tour, there was this one 4-cover show: http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.as...=98&where=2008

And I think almost 10 shows that had 3 covers.

Ya if they tested positive on Thursday last week, we should expect them back by next Thursday for the remainder of the tour.. no way the alt format continues after everyone is cleared

new when the band was new. I'm fine with and even hope to see Watchtower, LBV, The Maker at shows. I do not want to see Jimi->karaoke night. I do not want to see Sledgehammer, BDTH, Sweet Emotion, Thank You etc etc at a show. They don't make or break a show but if more than 2 covers are played that aren't in the first group I mentioned it makes the show weaker for me.

I would rather DMB dig into their own catalog then learn a new cover.

Not sure if I’d count DMB2Sets as a “normal format”, but I was at Charlotte 2015 and we got four covers. I’m sure there’s plenty from those two years with lots of covers since Dave opened the majority of shows with a combination of Rye Whiskey, Needle, Whiter Shade, etc.

Are they offering refunds for this 'alternate format'? I mean, it's not DMB as stated on the ticket. Replacing your rhythm section and playing a bunch of covers... seems like you should be able to opt out of that.

That said, I'd go if it were me... it's something different than what they've been doing the last several years.

There was a chance to make these shows really special. Dave Solo could have drafted from some of the deeper cuts he performed during the live by request shows over the last year - Up & Away, YNK, Break for It, Raven, etc. D&T could be pulling serious rarities. The band portion is limited, so make the other parts that have deeper available catalogs better.

Instead, they went with….that, last night.

Playing it crazy safe when safe is already out the window.

Gorge got Minarets, Stone, Two Step, LIOG, STJL, Too Much, Christmas Song, BOWA and YNK in the solo/D&T slots. Most of those were chosen in the request shows and are rare. They did great at the Gorge. They brought none of those and nothing new to the Oregon show. Night and day.

They did 17 DMB, 1 DM and 2 covers last night. In terms of DMB to cover ratio that's about as good as it gets even with Carter and Fonz

Yeah, I should have clarified I was talking about Bend.

Guess it furthers the idea that the venue really matters. Don't catch a Wednesday show I guess.

Thing that cracks me up is how many people are blaming the band specifically for anything having to do with refunds as if Dave and Tim are sitting around at a computer running that side of things, whoever does their social media could do a much better job communicating the message for those that aren't aware of what is going on. It really isn't a reasonable expectation for every person going to know that Carter and Stefan have Covid-19 and can't be there, there should be a heads up on it per show. That being said we are in a pandemic and the ticket is bought with the understanding there is risk to it that things may change, the shows are still going on and the band is doing the best they can to still play. The setlist side of things is a different argument.
