It’s just above Stand Up for me. But only because of 3 or 4 songs that make it salvageable, whereas Stand Up has none songs.

Those songs are decent, but the recordings on the actual album are really bad. That is what I personally judge an album on. Look at Riley Walker's Lillywhite Session album for example. That album really isn't good even though the songs themselves are great.

Another not so-good-example: If I put out an album of my songs which admittedly aren't very good, but then a badass jazz band took my songs and performed them live with different arrangements and solos, that would not make my album any better. It would still be an embarrassing album.

True but when both albums aren’t great I’m picking the one with better songs. There’s a saying about polishing a turd…

I’m the end it’s art. I respect your opinion.

There's a fair amount of studio stuff that could go with SD. The legality of oncluding some of it gets weird, but there are acoustic renditions of OSW, Everyday, and (a third I can't recall); Cigarette lit; Litho Blitho; I was told at one time that there were acoustic studio versions of all those songs, but IDK if that was just speculation or not; Save Me had an official remix (it wasn't great, but still worth documenting); a DM+F show (assuming cover rights get straightened out for all of those) ... there's bound to be other material that was recorded that maybe didn't get fleshed out.

Put the actual out on LP, give the others as a CD or DL supplement.

But then I guess they'd have to do that anniversary set of Boyd's record...

Live yes! Studio versions are not listenable.

There's a song with a cool guitar intro called "Dreamgirl" that quickly gets ruined once the lyrics make no sense.
Old Dirt Hill has a boy band opening it up.
YMDT is a demo. Same with LB.
Hello Again is still mind boggling as to why they cut the drum solo, so unlistenable.
Out of my hands and Steady as we Go are not really a DMB songs.

This exactly yes! I like a lot of what the Stand Up songs have become. Bayou and YMDT are way overplayed, but they're pretty awesome songs live compared to the way they were given to us on the album.

I don't think AFTW song wise are that great in a live setting. Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier are good, but not great. Belly Belly Nice is ok. Broken Things is off the table it seems. The rest... who cares?

If that’s how you feel ok. I disagree.

For the sake of argument, what on aftw is better than American baby?

I only really like those 4 studio versions. It’s 4 more than SU. So that’s why it’s not dead last.

Miles ahead of anything on AFTW
100% disagree, which is fine. SU does not interest me as a studio recording or live performance. I like YMDT, but it's the "best" song on an album full of poor songs...un-intriguing songs that do not speak to me at all. AFtW is chock full of amazing songs that grab and hold my interest.

Objectively, EVERYTHING on AFtW is actually musically (harmonically & melodically) miles ahead of anything on the SU album. We're talking completely different levels of music. Of course this does not mean it's better at all, let alone for you or any other individual listener.

Ideally I never hear another SU song again live, but I've become a Bayou magnet and I loathe that tune.

Maybe. The whole album just puts me in a bad mood. Can’t really explain it.

Broken Things is miles ahead of American Baby, and I'm not shitting on AB but it's a meh song for me. BT has a lame chorus lyric, but Boyd's solo and the rest of the music/lyrics are top notch for that iteration of the band. Same for The Riff.

I am not an OOMH hater, I do enjoy music like that and feel like it gets a bad rap but I'm curious what makes it a cut above something like The Riff for you.

LOL, that's how I feel about Stand Up. Try as I might, just can't get through it. Especially songs like ODH. I *hated* Louisiana Bayou until I heard it live. YMDT is really the only song for me that was ok on it.

Don't get me wrong, AFTW has some crap on it. Dave ruined If Only with absolute shit lyrics and Gaucho is embarrassing in places.

Man, Gaucho could have been great and then half the lyrics were played far too safe and the other half were phoned in. Same with If Only, musically far superior to Mercy but phoned in lyrically.

I really want that instrumental version of the whole SU album to leak out, because so many of those tunes are great musically or had potential (ODH). But that record is literally just American Baby, Hello Again, Stolen Away, and YMDT for me. Bayou can be fun live... but...

And I know people are upset about not having the drum solo in Hello Again, but keeping that as a live only variation makes it more.
