I wonder if Lillywhite hadn't produced AFTW, if he'd still be in the tier of "untouchables" of DMB lore?

Doesn't matter one bit that Soccer Dad Dave wrote those songs, we'll blame Steve for that album not being on par with stuff written prior to 2000. I was just glad Lillywhite didn't sit down and co-write songs with a lazy Dave Matthews like Ballard and Cavallo did with their pop shine albums.

A lot of people love AFTW and think it is an example of him still being able to bring out their greatness

I just don't see people blaming Steve or Dave for Lillywhite when plenty of people like it, not sure what your argument was. I think many still consider him untouchable, he's not exactly Batson.

The expectations of "DMB with Lillywhite producing" seemed to bring upon a vibe a disappointment, not from everyone, but from people who seemingly expected Dave to have fountains of creativity while writing.

Even though he hadn't shown that level of since the summer 2004 songs.

Lillywhite understands how to make DMB and other bands sound really good, he's just great at what he does, especially in comparison to someone like Batson who made SU sound terrible. I consider AFTW their worst album but the sound quality is good, song quality is always on the writer.

Just popping in to say the "Dancing Nancies" from Warehouse 10 Vol. 3 (6.05.2009 Comcast Theatre, Hartford, CT) is pretty solid. Give it a spin!

I think AFTW sounds exactly how it should for what the band was at that moment in time. Of course, we all want to hear the mixes that Steve did, but I can't imagine them being drastically different than the final product. I love AFTW very much, and for those who have seen me post around here before, you know how highly I think of Snow Outside. Steve is fully responsible for how magnificent that song sounds, outro especially.

My Top 10 changes from day-to-day, but is generally some combination of: Seek Up, Two Step, Jimi Thing, Sugar Will, Blue Water, Drunken Soldier, Crush, LITHOG, Dreaming Tree, Snow Outside, Recently & Typical Situation. I suppose some might say that "Drunken Soldier is better than The Stone" is a hot take, but I find DS to be more musically epic than Stone. I'll concede that Stone has better lyrics, but I've never been much of a lyrics guy. Just a matter of preference.

Would love to see the Tim/Jeff duel come back for the outro on Crush like they were doing 08/09. We really need some more Jeff on the longer slow jams like Crush and #41 in particular. Rashawn and Tim can keep their solo spots in #41 just extend it to like 12 minutes and give Jeff a damn solo!

Am I the only one who thinks that the studio cut of #41 is marred by Tim's guitar on the right channel? Can't stand that repetitive riff during the verse

Shit on DMB all you want, but this quarantine has given people a decade's worth of soundboard audio/HD video releases in a few months.

Captain is one of my favorites, but only issue I have with it is that it's too short. Most live versions are in the 3:30-4:00 range, whereas tLWS version was nearly 6 minutes. So, anything that stretches it out is good for me. I wish they'd jam on it like they do JT and other tunes. Gimme a 10 minute Captain and I be happier that pig in poop...maybe even a chickapig in...umm, well...chickapoop!?!

Is it odd to anyone else how this week is such a big one for DMB and Dave in particular? 8.15.95 Live at Red Rocks is recorded. Their first live album and arguably their best. 8.15.01 Dave’s kids are born. 8.19.08 LeRoi passes away. 8.14.13 Dave hires Raab to help with his vocals, likely extending the life of the band and his career.
I know this is all extreme coincidence but I like to this this week is special.

I far less interested in this than hearing how the songs sounded before Dave said he compromised and listened to other people. The way Dave's talking, it sounds like it would be something more significant than the mixing...maybe arrangements, lyrics, featured soloists, even the songs themselves (as in which ones were selected and how drastically they may have been changed).

I love AFTW. Considering it's about to rain here, I'm gonna pop it on again.

I've always considered the DMB canon as such:

Big Four: UTTAD, Crash, BTCS, BS (favorite album, esp with LS thrown in)
Middle saggy stretch: ED (still solid), SU
Lesser Big Three: BW, AFTW, CT

There's seven albums there I don't mind hearing stuff from. Eight if you include ED. Really the only studio album I don't listen to anymore is SU, and even that I will revisit every few years and listen to what I like on it. This is just me though and I know most people don't like at least one of the three last albums. But I love them all. AFTW just sounds amazing and I don't mind the lyrics as much as some on here. I think it's a really beautiful album about familial issues and it SOUNDS like DMB.

Took a listen to 4/4/02 (the first show of the 2002 spring tour) today. Prior to warehouse Dave plays an intro and mumbles some lyrics and it totally sound like blackjack.

Also this Busted Stuff has a Sexy MF interp. Pretty cool wasn’t expecting that honestly.

    Man I love spring 2002

My first DMB show was during that tour, I'd give up the remains of my hairline to gain back some memories of it.

Really wish the band would do a proper west coast arena tour again, the pacific northwest has 3 viable arenas. Moda Center in Portland, Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, and Spokane Arena in, uh, Spokane.

Man, I love a good taper pull. A good taper pull is enjoyable in a very different way then a live release. It’s nice, because I like to have the crowds perspective on the sound if that makes sense? Just feels more like your at the show. Also depends on the system. My cars system is The factory bullshit and I hardly ever play taper pulls. My house stereo is a lot better (although pretty old) and sounds good with taper pulls. Can listen to them all day.

Same for me, I'll take them over a live release anyway. I have the same issue in the car. I actually think I ruined one of my cars systems listening to them up,so I never really listen to them in this one.

I love taper pulls but i I need to listen to them with headphones. It’s just a much better listening experience IMO.
