Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

To: Guitar players...

Anyone know why Dave says the guitar on Again and Again is too hard and why he lets Tim play it instead?

I just looked up the tabs, played it, and quickly realized it’s actually one of the easier songs in the catalog lol... I’m confused?

Thoughts?

I'd assume he means playing it while singing at the same time like Dreamgirl, Seven, etc. On a similar note he used to say Spaceman was really hard for him to learn to play while singing at first.

Guitar part is easy, the vocals are difficult. Although now that I think about it, he DID originally play keyboards on it while singing, so... maybe he just doesn’t want to play on it?

That’s what he means, yep. But... it’s extremely easy to sing and play it at the same time. That’s why I’m confused.

I mean, to play One Sweet World and sing at the same time is a lot more difficult. Or even Idea of You.

I’m not trying to say I’m good at anything, I’m trash. I’m just lost on how he says it’s difficult to play and sing what I think is probably one of the easiest songs in the catalog. Very odd.

What do you mean by difficult?

You might be right on him just not wanting to play it. I just don’t believe it when he says it’s too difficult to do both. We’re talking a guy who can do very odd things with his hands and voice at the same time. Again and Again is not up there with the complex portion of the catalog.

I think the "Tim plays my part" is just a joke. It was played on keys, and Buddy took that role.

In theory since Dave played it on keys, he never wrote any guitar parts for it. It's very safe to assume that Tim's guitar parts were written by Tim. While an amazing musician and player, Tim is a decidedly more conventional guitar player. Dave has never really been a conventional guitarist and even stated in the past that simpler strumming patterns were hard for him to play.

I actually enjoy how awkward Dave was at first when singing A&A, still the guitar strapped on, them WITHOUT the guitar, and them embracing the groove and just singing it and feeling it. It seemed to help w/ Sledgehammer too.

Are there any links to Dave talking about playing the guitar, his style, technique? I’d love to read

Watching a Copperpot YT Vid from the Gorge in 2013. I never realized Stefan used a pick for Squirm. Looks so weird considering he’s always slappin’. Anyone know of other songs he uses a pick for?

I also think that the song unlike a lot of the post roi music thrives off the open space between the keys and electric guitar. It sounds smoother with no acoustic guitar and buddy plays the keys now for the band.

It's actually one of my favorite post roi compositions because it utilizes tim's great guitar playing with a clean sound and isn't a wall of sound allowing the keys and bass to actually shine. It's a song perfectly made for the personnel of DMB 3.5ish

PNP->Grey + great venue + Grossi and Malta as special guests

I just realized they haven’t played Dreaming Tree with Buddy yet. I cannot wait for that to happen if what they did with Typical and Mercy is any indication

I'd be excited if they played it more but at the same time I'm so shaky in my confidence in regard to Buddy's contribution on some of their best material

The more I go back to recordings of 2016, the more I'm glad they got rid of Boyd and added Buddy. Performances are so tight right now, they were getting slopping with Boyd.

Grace is Gone is great too IMO and almost entirely because of Buddy, there are certainly examples of him being a positive addition to their big songs but yes Lie in Our Graves I think is absolutely awful because of him. Everyday isn't in the same tier but I think it's awful because of him. I feel like there are other examples of big songs where I hate what he does but I haven't listened to Buddy era DMB in a couple months.

... I like Buddy overall but sometimes I think his decisions wreck things

I really don’t miss the violin after hearing how tight everything sounds with Buddy. When I listen to a lot of the pre-2018 live material, the violin consistently sticks out as being a glaring weak link.

What I haven’t been able to put in words. I feel the exact same way. Can’t listen to pre-2018 unless it was a show Boyd was actually in tune on (not very many).

I’ve listened to quite a few fan recorded shows and compared them to live releases and it’s interesting how often they tweaked Boyd’s violin on the live official release so it wouldn’t sound like crap. My guess is they were dubbing over it with a different recording where he played the note correctly etc.

Agreed. And sometimes he misses the ‘obvious’ in my opinion.

For example, he plays an amazing ‘fill’ so to speak at 6:39 (4th measure counting from 6:31), and Carter and Tim expected that same ‘fill’ from Buddy at 6:54 (8 measures later) but he went silent.

You can tell Carter and Tim expected Buddy to play it by the way they accent their notes. This bugs me more than it should but Buddy knows better!

    https://youtu.be/7PFW4OnMRn0

Edit: listening to it again, it sounds like Stefan was expecting it too. So odd how Buddy didn’t play it.
