    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/05/justic...ges/index.html

"The relationship continued with overnight stays at Sandusky's home, where touching led to sexual acts", Kelly said.

"One of the most compelling and disturbing pieces of testimony in this investigation came from an eyewitness to a late-night sexual assault that allegedly occurred in March of 2002, in the locker room of the Lasch Football Building on the University Park Campus," Kelly said. "Hearing what sounded like sexual activity in the showers of a building that was supposed to be empty, a graduate assistant reportedly observed Sandusky sexually assaulting a naked boy who appeared to be about 10 years old."

In all, the grand jury identified eight young men who were the targets of similar sexual advances or assaults by Sandusky between 1994 and 2009. All of the victims first encountered Sandusky through Second Mile activities, Kelly said.

Authorities said they are continuing to search for additional victims and that the case remains active.

Wow. I know there is scum everywhere, but Penn State always felt like a hotbed.

    Penn State scum.

Some of the Amazon reviews, as usual, are pretty good :

100% false advertising by Mr. Sandusky. Not a single page in this book "touches" on how to appropriately gain the trust of young, at-risk boys, and then use that trust to perpetrate horrifying sexual assaults on the very children who turned to you for guidance and support. Almost as disappointing as the first time I watched "Touched by an Angel." Don't even get me started on that bullcrap. I still can't watch anything with Della Reese in it.

Although I'm curious to know more about how officials at Penn State handled the situation when they were made aware of it, but I don't think there's any reason to associate Penn State with this sick excuse of a human being. He just happened to be a coach for PSU who moonlighted as a pedophile.

Did you read above? He was raping one of the boys in the showers of PSU football facility's locker rooms when a grad assistant walked in. Grad assistant reported to Paterno and Paterno told the AD. Nothing ever came of it. Campus police weren't notified. No investigation. Nothing.

Especially at Penn State - I read somewhere that JoePa is the single biggest donor to Penn State, basically where much of his salary goes.

Is it really Paterno's duty to go right to the police with something like this though? The accused retired from coaching in 1999, and the incident reported to Paterno allegedly occurred in 2002. I'm sure based on whatever chain of command PSU has, Paterno did the right thing -- college coaches aren't there to get involved with investigating serious criminal accusations regarding those around him, but there's a high likelihood that such situations are part of the AD's job description. I'd imagine that Paterno probably did exactly what he was supposed to and Curley either ignored it, swept it under the rug, or couldn't substantiate the claims to the point where he though further action was necessary.

It's easy to judge people based on things that already happened (who knows what we would do if in a similiar situation?), but to make this more of a real world question - what if you got a tip from someone you manage that someone else you used to manage was allegedly commiting a serious crime. Is the moral duty to just report it up the chain, or to contact law enforcement?

Joe Pa had Sandusky at practice and games five years after the incident. With the victim, of all people. Although, at his age, he may have forgotten.

My understanding is that his proclivities are what led to his 1999 sudden "retirement" in the first place.

The problem is that the details of the specific incident involving Paterno are pretty vague at this point. No one really knows exactly what he was told, nor do we know what steps Curley undertook, or told Paterno he undertook, to investigate the claims. For all we know he went back to Paterno and told him that it was being handled, or that the claims lacked merit.

I personally don't doubt the veracity of the claims against Sandusky given the breadth of the allegations -- it sure seems like he engaged in some horrific and unforgivable acts. However, from Paterno's standpoint, it's entirely possible that he believed he was doing right and that the proper actions were being taken.
