Pit vs. Seats

So my crew and I were having this discussion the other day about which is a the better overall show experience, the pit or seats. This experience was discussed from the view point of overall show experience, sound quality and stage view. I know every venue is a little different in their layouts, but generally they are similar.

So while I am still torn on the topic, as both have there benefits, I thought I toss the question out to the board to hear your experience and thoughts.

So which one do you enjoy better and what’s the reasoning behind it…

Seats. If I need to piss my spot is there. Also I like middle of the row. People like aisles but fuck that. You gotta move for everybody. In the middle, you don’t have to move at all.

Pit. Very back of pit near the rail. Good sound usually and nice view, you aren’t crowded all up on people.

seats are a better overall view and sound. pit is cool if you're right up front and have never experienced that before, but its far more enjoyable of a show to be as close to the sound board as possible.

Seats...100%. These 40-something year old legs can't stand that long.

If you have the opportunity to be on the rail, take it. To me, that was an awesome experience and one I won't forget, being just left center of Dave (Charlotte 2013). Agree the sound and overall perspective lacks though. The other couple times wife and I got pit tickets, we hung out in the back and it was much more enjoyable in terms of viewing and listening. Overall, definitely prefer seats near center to sitting convenience and freedom to come and go without losing a good spot.

    Seats
Like others have said, your spot is reserved and you can go to the restroom without losing your spot.

And from what I’ve seen there are drastic differences in some venues. When I was in Atlanta’s pit it was packed to the point of discomfort. Chicago was huge and had some seats on the back rail.

Seats are the best for everything, sound, convenience, and you can still be really close with seats. Being on the rail once or twice is fantastic though. Nothing to see but an unobstructed view of the entire band 10 feet or so in front of you. You almost forget there are 20,000+ people behind you.

Interesting, we were night near each other for that show and I don't recall being disappointed with the sound. Granted, I may have been too excited to notice since it was my only time in the pit. The only time I can remember being disappointed with sound outside of a stadium show was Charlotte 2012; I was about midway back in reserved seats, but right in line with one of the stacks. It wasn't bad, really, but Stefan and Tim were overpowering; I felt that show as much as I heard it.

Back of the lawn is where the party’s at. And if not, then there’s plenty of space to move around and find the party.

Certainly won't say I was disappointed, just not as good as being further back away from the stage. Even so, perhaps the best concert experience I've ever had.

It was a great show for sure, and being in the pit was an awesome experience. Anyone that has the opportunity should take it at least once.

Having a seat is nice. You don't have to stress about getting in early and standing all night. But, having the opportunity to be on the rail twice, it's a great experience. Being able to lock in with the guys on stage and not having any distractions between you and the music is like nothing else. You really get to experience and feel the music being on the rail.

    Pit.

I don't really drink when I go to shows so I don't have to piss. If I'm spending all the money to be there, I'd rather be fully immersed and close to the action. And I've been given so many shit ass pavilion seats from the Warehouse (way off to the side or 5-10 rows from the lawn).

Id agree with this right here. Seats for sure unless you can get on the rail. (Or even the back rail). I spent a good amount of time on the rail in 2000 and 2002 at deer creek. An experience I will never forget. Otherwise, the pit is just a cluster. Being shoulder to shoulder with somebody for three hours, especially in the heat, will kill the overall vibe and experience for me. In 2008 in Louisville, they had GA on the field. Which was essentially a big pit. I was about 15 feet from the stage. I smoked a cig and passed out right there in front of everybody. Never had happened before or since. Too many people. And just way too hot.

And the way you are somewhat separated from the rest of the crowd kind of ruins the energy for me too. I wish they would just get rid of pit all together. I don’t understand it honestly. I guess there is a Money asPect to it as it seems the warehouse controls a majority of the pit. But I don’t know why the same can’t be said for thise tickets if they were replaced with seats. I am pretty sure everybody would choose a seat in their same pit position if they could. Anyhow, so seat for me definitely. But you cant rely on warehouse to get you a good seat. So I find other means whether that is Ticketmaster or searching the boards. I definitely don’t want to be in lawn and in most cases don’t want uppers unless it is center next to the sound board.
