Yes I think the title track might be my favorite tune here. It's sooo good.

Definitely a great album, and I'm sure it will only continue to grow on me. This band has clearly cemented itself as perhaps the greatest group of the last ten years.

I don't understand how people don't love that album.

There are a lot of sort of "ehh" songs on Suburbs. I might change my mind later seeing as how I've only had it for a couple of days, but:

    Empty Room
    Half Light I
    Deep Blue
    Wasted Hours
    Sprawl (Flatland)

I feel like these could've been left off of the album.
I agree that those songs probably could've been left off. Don't really care for either Half Light, and I do like Empty Room though.

Really like this album, musically. Lyrically, it's a bit shite. I mean, I can't get past the cliches about the suburban sprawl that litter the record. What are they saying about suburban life that hasn't been said before? It all just feels very pretentious to me.

I kind of agree. And personally, I don't feel that city life is much better (I've been doing it for most of my adult life.)

But it's interesting how their lyrics change from record to record. Funeral looked inward a lot regarding personal relationships. It touched a little on today's generation as a whole and their indifference/disjointedness as well. Neon Bible expanded on that last bit, and looked outward at other issues (war, the media, commercialism, etc.) Suburbs is about the monotonies and disconnected feeling of suburban life.

So I was just talking to someone about their upcoming shows, and this person said, "Who's Arcade Fire?"

Should I just kill them? I should, right?

Waste it again, and again, and again
    I've got to ask...

I've told some friends about them and no one has ever heard of them, I attribute this to due to the lack of radio play.

But I've had two friends who immediately recognized "Wake Up" from the Where the Wild Things Are commercials.

I know they're not huge (although a band that can sell out Madison Square Garden isn't exactly small either.)

But the thing is, this person listens to very similar music, etc. I feel that most people that are into indie/alternative/rock blah blah should at least have heard of AF.

    Anyway, I was obviously joking.

i love the new album so hard.

the week before i go to dmb shows, i don't listen to any dmb... dumb tradition. in its place, i'm listening to this album, nonstop.

the suburbs, half light 2, sprawl 2, city with no children, suburban war, and modern man are my favorites.

still rather indifferent about month of may. and i also LOVE the orchestral intro to empty room.

fucking 10/10 album. also, new avatar

oh and i don't know what the critical opinion is, but what's with the ants hate on rococo? kinda reminds me of phish's curtain. repetitive but musically very pretty

Hate to say it but this is most certainly not a 10/10 album, it's probably a 7.5, an 8 at best. It's definitely very good but it cannot compare to the first two.

    I'd agree with 7.5

Half Light II, Sprawl II, City With No Children, Rococo are the only really stand-out tracks for me.

The rest of the songs are good, but they feel like something any modern indie/alt band could write. I just feel like these songs are missing that unique Arcade Fire sound...the one that songs like Black Mirror, Rebellion, and Tunnels have. That sort of dense, orchestrated sound. I don't hear much violin, glockenspiel, horns, etc on this album. Mostly just guitar and synth.

Don't get me wrong though, it's a great album, but I expect excellence from Win and the group

I'd give it about an 8 as well but I think it's better than Neon Bible.

Half Light II is the best track on the album, IMO.

I'd give it a 8.5 or maybe a 9. But I'm a mark for this band so that's to be expected.

Re: The Arcade Fire Appreciation Thread...

After listening to it a lot since the leak, I find myself really loving it as a whole, but the tunes I keep coming back to are at the beginning and the end. Not to say that everything from Rococo through Wasted Hours isn't really good, because it is, but the album is book-ended really fucking well. Suburbs > Ready > Modern Man is an amazing way to start, and Deep Blue > We Used To Wait > Sprawl I & II > Suburbs Cont. (which is an awesome way to end, but is also an amazing intro to the full song back at track 1) is a fucking killer run.

But at the same time, I can't decide which of those middle tunes I'd take out and put as B-sides to make it more concise & even stronger.

But as it sits, it's an 8.5 for me, sitting #4 for the year

    8.6 from the all-knowing P4K

    Surprised it wasn't given a 9 actually

The most interesting part of their review IMO:

There's a tension between the uneasily resolving chords and lightfooted piano shufle on the title track, as Butler sings in a restrained falsetto: "Sometimes I can't believe it/ I'm moving past the feeling.' As The Suburbs plays out, that "feeling" is one that lived on Funeral and is dying here. The initial fantasy of Funeral was escaping the neighborhood, dancing beneath the police lights, and living on misbehavior. The Suburbs can be seen as the update decades later, with those same kids having kids of their own, and moving back to and struggling in the same neighborhoods.

Also, I really love Neon Bible. I'll be happy if this one is better.

Re: The Arcade Fire Appreciation Thread...

I've listened to the stream from NPR's website about 5 times now between yesterday & today and so far I'd say its a definite dissapointment for me. Especially after reading all the fantastic reveiws this albums been receiving. The 2 things that I love about this band & set them apart from alot of other bands I listen to is that they are A) dramatic & B) have a bit of a dark, dreary sound to them. To me this album has neither one of those qualities. There's no big, dramatic standout track like Intervention or Wake Up or Rebellion that you just want to blare at full blast and sing you fucking ass off to as you soar down the highway with your windows down, at least I havent found it yet. Seems to be quite a bit more mellow stuff on this album. And this album doesn't hit its stride until about track 4 or 5 where as the first 2 albums come out of the gate running. With that being said I also didn't like Neon Bible at all either when I first gave it a listen and it eventually grew on me to the point where now its my favorite AF album so you knows....YMMV.

I'd say Empty Room, We Used to Wait, and Sprawl II are all huge dramatic tracks you can blare at full volume.

to the first bolded. Completely agree.

To the second bolded - same here. Funeral took a while to grow on me as well. That's what worries me about Suburbs. It's very instantly accessible compared to their first two albums. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I just know from personal experience that my favorite albums/artists are ones that I initially did not like. (Dylan, Pink Floyd, etc.) The ones that grow on you are the best.
