Re: Live Trax Vol. 53: Boise State University Pavilion (11/2/98)

I nearly got pissed off that they selected 8.31.10, a Boise show I could have gone to. I'm more than relieved it's a '98 winter show. I couldn't make out what the date was when I initially saw this in the Live Release sub-thread in cDMB.

It'll always be archived in my mind as the year when Listener Supported happened, which is to this day among my Top 3 DMB shows

There are certainly good shows in 1999 - and the band was near or at the heights of their popularity - but as someone who has been going to shows since 1998 I never think too highly of the '99 tour. I did love 05/22/99 but the other two shows I went to (05/20 and 05/21) I never revisit.

When I think of '99', I think of how much of a massive event going to the show felt like (possibly because they sold out 2 and 3 night runs at stadiums) and not the quality of the music or set itself.

As for LT 53 I have to echo what others have said; great to have another show from arguably the band's best tour, weird to have it be a run of the mill set. But I have never listened to the show so what do I know.

I think a lot that goes into these picks is Boyd. Listening to parts of the tape, this seems like one of the few winter 1998 shows he didn't sound like ass.

They used that poster for all the shows. Friends have Rupp and U of Illinois and they're the same.

Not that the description is swaying anyone’s purchase but you’ve gotta love the completely mailed in show description too haha.

"inspired versions of Rapunzel, Stay (Wasting Time), Crush”
“extended jams on Lie In Our Graves and Jimi Thing”

1998 DMB is great DMB, and I’ll probably buy it — but in terms of getting something unique, I guess we wait at least a couple more months!

Fall/Winter 98 is one of my favorite tours, but I wouldn't call this show one of the highlights

LT39, on the other hand ...

i dont want to double down on my complaining too much, but do we know if LT 52 sold well? Or even 51? Some of the more "generic" sets. I like both of those releases quite a bit, but i feel like we're sitting in a full year of underwhelming sets on live trax now. Feels like once you hit the 50s, you'd want to really go balls out with the best sets

The people who hear things on here probably have no idea how LT51 and LT52 sold. It might be only to those with a NDA with the band's management who knows how the numbers look for LTs. I've never seen it said on here who is responsible for picking these things, if it's Capshaw or people under him. Those who know probably can't say. Sometimes it's the band (I forget which LT was selected because Dave thought it was a great idea in his mind).

Buying, bc I buy everything they release, saw fall 98 and got really excited. Bummer no last stop or Stone and not popular around here but no watchtower. Fall 98 has some wild watchtower intros but Stefan.

I’ve said it many times I would love to know the process behind how these get selected. And would be cool if they could somehow incorporate fans to choose one.

While we love the songs that have come since and have enjoyed our shows from the last few years, the original line-up was very special. Much more magical than any iteration with different and/or additional musicians, barring when Timmy was a guest. In addition to regretting not seeing more shows w/ Roi, I wish we'd had the chance to see the roginal 5 w/ Tim.

I would imagine it was chosen for a reason, and it's likely bc the band is on fire and the performances were near flawless. Haven't listened but I would assume that would be a main reason to choose it

I'm happy that this is a 1998 show and will reserve my real judgment until after I hear the official release, but I was really hoping the next 1998 show would feature the LeRoi solo that preceded Rapunzel fairly often in 1998. This show in particular, which features the solo as an opener, is up there on my list: http://www.dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSe...=19&where=1998

I believe it's also one of only a handful of shows that have The Stone, Typical, Last Stop and Halloween in the same set. Edit: I just searched. There are only 4 sets ever that have those songs in the same set.

There's at least two shows in this fall/winter '98 stretch that we don't have a recording of, Winnipeg and Edmonton. They did a sweep across Canada in November '98

The 11/2 show does have Heartbeat though and that is certainly better than the 5/15 solo which is really only 30-45 sec of early Heartbeat.

This Gorge set is FIRE though

Thought a 98 show would have more enthusiasm.

Hopefully they can release a show with Buddy to help scratch that itch for those that are passing on this one.

That's a fair point. And yes, it is a fire set. My recollection is that they sounded pretty good as well (but it's been a while since I listened).

Re: Live Trax Vol. 53: Boise State University Pavilion (11/2/98)

This is an instant purchase for me. Looks like it will be a staple in my rotation. Nothing fancy, just a straight forward show from one of their best tours. Original 5 + Tim, no Butch or other guests. Looking forward to the Seek Up opener and the Minarets (first time release from 98) Really can’t go wrong with 90s DMB.

I believe these are two main reasons in the selection, along with it being Carter’s birthday. First show released from Idaho, last LT was the first from Maine. Either way, I’m always excited for more 98. Not the 98 show I would’ve picked, but I’m confident there will be plenty more down the road.

Really excited about this! I saw Fall '98 and made an instant purchase for the FLACs. Didn't even look at the setlist until after and I'm even more excited now. I love this era of the band, and I feel like the fact that they had no guests, it's only 13 or so songs, and it's not a show I've honestly really heard or read anything about, leads me to believe it's probably a really fire show from a performance standpoint that's flown under the radar because of the other absolutely stellar shows from that same tour with more guests, rarer setlists, etc. I'm really looking forward to it. And I want to show my support for releases from this era by giving them my money when they release one. The money, and pre-orders, send a message; I want them to think favorably on releasing shows from this era in the future.
