Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Plan B - 3/5

Eh. This was almost a 2.5. It's like they tried to cram every type of coming-of-age teen buddy comedy drama road trip trope into one movie and then sprinkle in some wokeness, and it really didn't land, plus it's 20-30 min too long. That said, there's some legitimate funny parts and laugh out loud dialog. The main story itself isn't bad either. Like had they just chosen one lane and stayed in it, this would be a real solid movie.

Robin Williams gives one of his greatest dramatic performances. It's also one of Pacino's last great roles. The pacing is excellent. Nolan seems to have an issue with pacing these days. Insomnia is just a sturdy crime thriller. Everyone involved did a good job. Hilary Swank. The cinematography is superbly atmospheric.

Insomnia is probably my second favorite Nolan film after Dunkirk.

You're right though that he's mainly just in the 3 boardroom scenes. However, he appears outside the boardroom at times (he announces the higher "rip" on Farrow Tech, he's in the house when they watch Wall Street, etc.).

Like Alec Baldwin's brief appearance in Glengarry when he was at the height of his star power, Affleck did a similar role in Boiler Room.

He'll always be Detective Bolander aka "The Big Man" to me from Homicide. So good.
He also said something in one of those scenes about how old he was and it making him like a senior citizen at the company or something. So maybe that was also intentional like he wasn't exactly one of the younguns.

Every breath you take. I thought it would be good because Casey Affleck is in it. I was wrong.

So hello all. Haven't been on AM much lately at all, and it's probably a great deal to do with the fact that I really not watched anything at all for months now, save the new Mortal Kombat (blah, very forgettable at best) and a rewatch of LOTR. What do you all recommend of recent releases? Really open to anything - movies, documentaries, or even TV series. Would rather come here than FB because I've come to learn that most of my Facebook circle will just end up recommending mostly things that I have already seen.

Here are my 2021 rankings so far (23 new releases):

    https://letterboxd.com/clayj41/list/2021-ranked/

Inside and Shiva Baby are the only two I'm particularly enamored with though.

As for TV, my top 5 of 2021:

    1. Loki
    2. Mare of Easttown
    3. Invincible
    4. WandaVision
    5. Hacks

I've also heard nothing but great things about Barry Jenkins' Underground Railroad, but it will likely be a few weeks before I get around to it. I'm currently plowing through The Handmaid's Tale for the first time, after which I'm prioritizing some 2020 series I still need to catch before Emmy nominations are announced next month.

    About Time 9.0/10

We started watching this Friday, as a good romantic comedy looking movie. Never realized this would be the perfect Father's Day movie. What a fantastic film. Bill Nighy at his best. Domhnall Gleeson so good. The whole cast was likeable.

Nostalgia and worry about the impermanence of life wrapped all in one. Hard to not picture your own relationship with your father. Just a great film.

Watching that movie, you'd never predict that Domhnall Gleeson would go on to become smarmy, watered down Star Wars Hitler.

About Time is wonderful. I remember vividly thinking when I saw it for the first time that it was such a breath of fresh air. I had a smile on my face for virtually its entire run time. Great film.

Siege of Firebase Gloria, simply the most accurate movie made about Vietnam - or so a number of Vietnam combat veterans have told me. It has a relatively young R. L. Ermy in it as well so if you enjoy war movies check this one out.

Here are some movies that are worth watching:

    The Dig (Netflix)
    Nomadland (Hulu)
Judas and the Black Messiah (HBO Max)
The Map of Tiny Perfect THings (Amazon Prime)

    TV Shows:

    Mare of Easttown
Mythic Quest (good comedy if you have any interest in the gaming industry)
Drive to Survive (Netflix documentary covering the last 3 season of Formula 1 racing)

I've followed The Handmaid's Tale since the beginning and I'm convinced that it's torture porn.

Both of my kids fell asleep watching Luca on Friday night, but I did start it late with the intention of them falling asleep. My youngest, 4, watched it the next day and loved it. She proceeded to watch it two more times after that. My 7 yo liked it, but wasn't as drawn in as the little one.

Watched “Crime of the Century” on the opioid crisis on HBO Max. Just really can’t believe how brazen these pharma companies are. Absolutely gut wrenching. Not for the faint of heart.

I'm also here for the About Time love. Absolutely charming movie as I recall.

    Godzilla vs Kong

Holy cow is the story dumb and I'm someone who really enjoyed Skull Island. I only saw the Godzilla movie once, but I don't remember it being too bad. The story in this movie reminded me of the GI Joe movie that came out a few years ago. It was basically written for children. That being said, the visuals and audio are fantastic in the movie. The fight scene in Hong Kong is demo-worthy for home theater enthusiasts (I rented the 4K blu-ray to get full bandwidth Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos). That's really the only reason I wanted to see the movie and it delivered in that regard.

Gonna watch a double header of spaceship movies.
Passengers and Voyagers. Will be #130 and #131.

The Lair of the White Worm

One of the horniest movies I've ever seen...and it squarely falls into the "so bad it's good" category.

We'd already know who she is if COVID hadn't delayed Spielberg's West Side Story.
