Re: Unpopular DMB Opinions

My "anti-Ants" opinions:

-Cornbread is a really good song
-Dreaming Tree, while good, is the least good song on BTCS
-Many Big 3 songs sound better studio than live.

I half-agree. Keep the Chicago Caravan in the middle of the summer tour every year. The region doesn't get much DMB love over the summer anymore (except Alpine which is quite a distance for most of us and is out of the way, and now that it is a Friday/Saturday thing...well I won't get into that.).

Loved the Caravan. I want it back.

    Also, JTR isn't anything special.

    - I do not pine for the 90s. I enjoyed them, but realize they're over.

    - I believe every album has good songs on it.

    - I do not consider The Lillywhite Sessions an album, as no one has heard a finished product.

    - I believe Boyd has sucked for years, and brining in Butch, now Tim, is to fill that hole.

    - I believe DMB's best years are behind them, but they're still better and more fun than a lot of other bands.

Cornbread isn't bad. I like the studio version with danny barnes. Live it isn't anything special, aside from tim's slide solo's.

Glad everyone likes my name? Haha.

    I enjoy Dreamgirl.

I think Angel isn't too bad. Wouldn't want to see a 12 minute with the Ladies version at a show, but I think it's a decent song

I think Rapunzel and Shake Me Like a Monkey are equal in that the studio is great and the live version is lacking

i think cornbread is a great song musically but most definately lacking lyrically. i really enjoy all of the new songs (sweet, mercy, gaucho). i really love YMDT, i dislike two step getting played so much. i love the song but being able to predict it in either the closer or E2 spot almost every night is awful. i like the space between, fool to think, if i had it all, old dirt hill. ya thats about it haha

You mean besides the fact that Rapunzel is a witty play on words based on a classic well known fairy tale, while SMLAM is a smattering of random, blatant sexual comments?

I don't think there's anything clever about Rapunzel lyrically

EDIT: That's not to say it's a poor song, it just fits well

    Also...

Dave Matthews has never been a good lyricist, and the greats (Spoon, The Dreaming Tree) are the exception. He was just more consistently mediocre in the past, as opposed to straight up bad at times.

i'd agree with most of that, so ~20th at best. i don't think i ever really tried making a top list, so i don't know where exactly everything would fall, but i do know #41 isn't all that high up.

i agree with Some Devil being one of dave's best works. i'd also say Stay or Leave as well, which to me is one of the most beautiful things he's written. Stay or Leave is about as perfect of a song as there is.

    PFWYG is a boring song.

Everyday is a solid album, minus Angel, as stated above.

Satellite is better in studio than live. (this is the only song I hold this opinion for other than SMLAM)

I haven't been around these parts for a while so I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but:

Time Bomb is a bottom-5 DMB tune. It's down there with Smooth Rider, Steady As We Go, Mother Father, and Hunger for the Great Light.

-Not matter how much they've beaten us over the head w/ it at shows, Big Whiskey is easily the best material the band's put out since the LWS. LITHOG and Squirm stand up against their all-time best. Why I Am and Pie are excellent. SMLAM is a great studio track. And the only undeniably weak track is Y&M.

-Oh, and I'll take Tim (loud or soft) over Butch (or any other sideman) all day. He's an intregral part of the DMB sound (old & new) and is the very best part of some Big 3 studio tracks.

    Completely agree.

Also, I like Angel off of the Folsom Field release.

Oh and whether or not its Butch... DMB needs piano. Piano would be much better than Tim.

I think Time Bomb is their worst song. I absolutely hate it. They ruined the song with the end. Should have gone back to that intro and jammed out to that

Yeah I think there's something more disconcerting about totally ruining a good idea as opposed to a song being a turd right from the get-go (Smooth Rider)

Building off of that, Robert Randolph is fucking terrible and the Smooth Rider at Charlottesville 2006 is the single worst song the band has ever performed

Can't say Randolph is that bad, but Smooth Rider is the absolute worst song this band has ever done by an extremely wide margin. Any band could have written that song, and it still would've sucked ass.
