Re: Rooftop

i really like this song, but i don't see how people are getting an "old" DMB feel from it. it sounds like a (really good) Everyday song. maybe i missed when it happened, but when did Everyday become "old/classic DMB"?

If you became a fan around BW (which a lot of people did) then the everydayish sound could be considered "old"

For the record, i agree with your analysis of the song. It sounds like it came from Everyday, just a bizarre alternate universe where that album was really good.

i hear everyday when i hear this song. not a total bad thing, i think its a solid song. but still probably my least favorite song on the record, i dont think it fits in with the rest of the record. but yea i like it

if anything i feel like broken things and snow outside are most reminiscent of old dmb. share some of the same dna, but still new.

    love the record though.

actually top to bottom though. If Only might be the most old school dmb song.

When I first listened, it wasnt my favorite either. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. It reminds me of dreams of our fathers.. kind of. It has a pretty catchy guitar riff, has an every day sound, and it has that little break down mid song where it gets kind of spacey. I find my self singing this song in my head.. especially the chorus.

the riff is practically identical to DOOF.....probably why it reminds you of it...

Is the bridge lifted from Hold Me Down/Cigarette lit? Just askin. Not in how its played but how he sings it.

Rooftop, similar to Gaucho, has a very cool verse, but a bad chorus.

The difference is that Rooftop's bridge is good while Gaucho's is not.

Most accurate thing for me that anyone else has said about the album. Absolutely cannot get enough of the melody he sings that part in !

I listened to the album today while I worked out. Skipped most of the slow songs. Rooftop was the best. It really made me dig in and work harder. Good stuff. Can't wait to hear it live.

    Very true.

A lot of this album sounds like Everyday to me. Especially Rooftop and Broken Things.

Snow Outside sounds like it was off Some Devil.

The only one I could see someone saying maybe it sounds old is Drunken Soldier, but even that one, not really.

Glad to see most people in here are identifying the line in the bridge as "Maybe I'll catch your eye". The almanac lists it as "catch a ride", im sure im not the only one to send them a correction.

Love the album as a whole, but the bridge in rooftop may be my favorite part, brilliant.

The bridge is wonderful. So wonderful that I keep posting about how great it is, over and over.

The worst part is that I'm just not a huge fan of the rest of the song, but I love the bridge so much that I'll listen to it just for the bridge. Then, after the song is over, sometimes I rewind and listen to just the bridge a couple more times.

Been kinda down on Rooftop (except the killer bridge) until the car ride home today when I had the album cranking, and Rooftop came on, and for some reason the first few lines of the song made me wonder if the lyrics might be sort of about Dave's own insecurity as a songwriter, and how he's finding it harder as he gets older to write music he can get behind. And maybe somewhat how he sees his relationship with his fans.... and someone who has so many other people hanging on his every lyric... that it sometimes makes it hard to find those words.

Or I could be batshit insane and it could be about something else completely! ...but through that prism I think I enjoy it more as it seems like it comes from somewhere real and more personal.

    Just thought I'd share. :-)

Overall, this is an interesting point of view....

To the bolded, your interpretation is all that matters (to you at least). the beauty of music, and art in general, is that each one of us can take away something completely different.
