Even if they don't intend to try and recapture their old stylings, they may still have intentions on producing something that sounds markedly different from Big Whiskey. If they wanted to make another Big Whiskey they probably would have just stuck with Cavallo, who did a fine job on that album. But going back to Lillywhite, consciously knowing the types of albums he brought out of them before, suggests they're possibly ready to make some more serious art.
Great post. I agree totally.

Going back with Lillywhite signifies that the band is in a strong place and ready to be very serious.

Big Whiskey (w/ Cavallo) was a great bounceback effort for them. It was a great tribute to Roi and a solid album.

But, I think this could be a much more confident/explosive album.

And, I dont think Lillywhite would be working with them if he wasnt impressed with their last effort and can see that they mean business. This guy was part of their "best" years....it will be very special to see what they can do together.

Nick prepared to go on a wild ride. The only albums I have experienced are ED,BS, SU, and BW but each one was awesome.

There are leaks and tidbits that get your appetite for music so ramped up that you can't even stand it!

But then when the first single drops it is such a cool feeling thinking about how this is brand new music from your favorite band.

I get the same feeling everytime and I expect this one to only be better with it being produced by Lillywhite.

I always like the new albums for a good bit too. That is before the band rams them down our throat for 3 tours.

Looking back... I can remember my impressions of ALL of their debut singles.

I remember hearing "What Would You Say" and rushing out to check out the rest of this new band--and falling instantly in love with UTTAD.

I remember hearing "Too Much" for the first time, when it was the lead single from the upcoming Crash album. I recorded it off the radio, on a cassette tape. And played it over and over and over in the car. It blew me away.

I remember being less sure of "Don't Drink The Water", but it grew on me.

I remember hearing "I Did It" and being... concerned.

I remember hearing "Where Are You Going" and being tentatively hopeful, but kind of underwhelmed.

I remember hearing "American Baby" and being stoked, followed by later disappointment at the rest of the album...

And then, when I listened to "Funny The Way It Is" for the first time, feeling this fiery sense of euphoria that my band was BACK! And they were.

I have no idea what to expect next, but that day they finally release a new single, it'll stay with me.

good vibes there. I only go back to SU. I remember being uncertain about American Baby and Funny both. SU only went downhill from there, but, fortunately, it was uphill for BW.

I'm hoping for all new songs, save for studio work on Sugar Will and Loving Wings (think Proudest Monkey from Crash for the latter). Come to think of it, Crazy Easy could be awesome too.

Not bad choices, but I think I'd still prefer new stuff over any of these.

Blue Water and Spotlight on the other hand...

    Disagree. Top 40 song, easily.

Dave is the same kind who thinks Cornbread is the second coming of Stairway To Heaven, so I'm not gonna really go by his taste.

Seriously. I will never understand that. Such a cheesy song. Maybe I'll just hold up a sign next show that says, "Actually, I have had you're cornbread. Numerous times. And, frankly, it ain't so good and it's making me sick. Please pass the pepto."

Honestly, I love the diversity of opinions on here sometimes, and I know there are people who don't like BW as much as me.

But your post in my eyes, sums up what BW was the most objectively. A bounce back album, and I really don't know why people try and make it anything more than that. Really, it's all I wanted it to be, especially after Roi died. With Roi, I would have expected a little more. I'm happy they bounced back, I think that happening is playing a pivotal role in them wanting to work with Lillywhite again, and truly wanting to make something great.

I'm not at all against putting some of the 2004 songs on the album. I'd rather have great/clean/finished versions of a few songs we've heard (which is acheivable with Lillywhite) over all new, mediocre songs. 2004 songs + SUAD + a few new tunes would be a great album. Sweet Up and Down leading off is my wish.

Also, I just learned that the musical interlude after Crush is Doobie Thing. I thought I knew everything about this band.
