Re: Belly Belly Nice is everything SMLAM should have been

Dmb played If Only on Ellen. Great, so arguably the weakest track could be the 2nd single, when the insanely catchy, fun, and musically deep BBN will not be thrust in the public's face. This band hasn't picked a proper single since Grey Street.

Clearly posting this on a new page since you and I are in complete agreement.

"So glad to see they played If Only on Ellen, probably confirming it's the second single. Awesome choice management, awesome. Belly Belly Nice had no shot."

    American Baby
    Dreamgirl
    Funny
Why I Am (Live, and Why I Am should have been the first single)
    You and Me
    Mercy

Real missteps to me were not having Why I Am first, and not having Shake Me at all. For AWFTW, I would had Belly Belly Nice, Mercy, and Broken Things. Each song accomplishes something different, but all of them have extremely strong pop sensibilities, while remaining unique. Top tier songs from the record as well.

If Only doesn't highlight Carter...at all, and I hate that. He is arguably the biggest part of what makes dmb incredibly unique, and they've picked 2 singles in the last 4 or so (You and Me, If Only) that do nothing to showcase his ability.

Absolutely. Not releasing SMLAM as a single was a travesty back with BW. And now, between Mercy and If Only, there will literally be no interest/spark whatsoever. Who makes these awful decisions?

Very well said. Both songs are playful, goofy, naughty-wink sex songs, and not meant to be deep, intellect-probing, secrets-of-the-universe songs, so it's a big mistake to look for that. Both songs do their jobs extremely well.

That said, SMLAM would leave BBN bleeding in a back alley crying for its mama. It not only rocks, it is the king of all album openers, in my opinion. I think the live version's placement is a large part of what's hurting it. Either kick off a show with it, or don't play it.

Easily the best thing about this album, only bad thing is the name of the song *cringes*. Just simply "Nice" would have been a good title

Studio Shake Me is good but the difference between Belly Nice and Shake Me is Belly Nice is good studio and live. Shake Me has not lived up to its potential on stage for no other reason than Dave's vocal delivery.

but the reason for that, IMO, is how fast the band plays it. so dave has to basically rap the verse.

    Bumping this for BBN

Let me just say, if you don't like this song, I truly feel sorry for you, and I suspect that you have to be pretty jaded or pretentious to not enjoy it.

It's one of the most fun songs since Billies and Too Much, and it is fun dmb at their best. Everyone contributes, it slams out of the gate, but builds even more. 2 great solos, probably the best melodies on the entire record (and one of the few songs where it felt like Dave Matthews attacked the song vocally like...well Dave Matthews), and truly just makes you want to smile and move. Pun intended...you feel this song in your belly. There's been a lot of really good fun songs since Billies and Too Much and I think BBN is right there with them. Great, happy, fun DMB, I will never tire of that.

it's the "love me baby, love me baby, shake me like a monkey baby" part. He sings it differently live and it sounds sloppy.

The verses too. It basically leaves him out of breath. Dreams of our Fathers syndrome. The vocals "weave" so to speak on the record, and live he basically just throws them up.

Yeah we're definitely in agreement. I really like BBN, probably now even a little more then I did a week or so ago, but I just feel SMLAM was such a great opener and the studio track is near perfection. The band's inability to perform it well live is what's hurt it's status.

Amen...The song, and Dave for that matter, have no room to breathe, literally. Carter, for all of his greatness cannot get the timing of this one down for some odd reason.

It's without a doubt top 3. And I think Broken Things, Belly Belly Nice is the best one-two (literally haha) punch on the album
