Aside from Squirm I can't think of any songs that have an edge since the early 00's, no songs have been written that could close a main set or encore. The expectation that they are going to come up with the next Two Step is pretty far gone for most people but that doesn't mean he flat out can't write anymore.

Lying in the Hands of God
Baby Blue
Squirm
Broken Things
Drunken Soldier
The Riff
Snow Outside
Sweet
Again and Again
Black and Blue Bird
Do You Remember
Here on Out
Idea of You
Samurai Cop
Virginia in the Rain
Bismarck
Death on the High Seas
Mother of Africa

All of these songs have been talked about positively by many Ants. I think the consistency is an issue which has been discussed a lot and range of emotion which is a huge factor when it comes to why DMB fans get hooked.
YMDT, LITHOG, Shake Me, Hello Again.

Shake Me is not a good example...it should never close a set or encore again. Haha

I am surprised no one has brought up the one part of the riff that seems like it may have come from that song dave noodled around with in 2009 at that private vegas show. Its different chords but the progression of it makes me think he changed the chords from that song to fit into this one.

I like the riff, I like the verse melody. But it doesn't feel complete. Under 3 minutes, doesn't really have a chorus. Feels like it could use a chorus melody that lifts it.

I've listened to that song dozens of times and I do not hear any resemblance.

Yeah, that Vegas song ("Hurricane") is actually one of my favorite little bits of music Dave has played. Love the lyrics: Fell from your arms, hit the ground like a hurricane... wish it had grown into something... I guarantee you it did not grow into Ocean and the Butterfly though; they sound absolutely nothing alike.

Anyway, Dave just played this again for the Your Vote, Your World thing. He sounded better and more confident on it. Still not sure how I feel about it. Wasn't a fan the first time I heard it.

Hurricane has so much potential, I really hope it finds it way to an album/live as a finished song at some point.

Agreed. This pops up in my head all the time. Really solid seed of a song.

He definitely sounds more confident in this version, but agreed...I dig each individual part, but not so much how they all fit together. I'm usually pro-breakdown and will always, always welcome a new Dave-style riff in a new tune, but it doesn't really work solo. It feels like DYR in that it's just tacked on. It's not bad, but sounds thin and out of place when played solo so I have to believe that it's intended as a full band arrangement.

Having a hard time seeing why Butterflies is getting such a positive response. Never heard the Hurricane song before now, but I've got to say, it's a whole lot better even incomplete and with talking.

I'm still hearing "Machines by cells design" especially after Dave's explanation of the song being about science.
