The problem I have with Dave's writing is that that he got completely rid of lyrical abstraction, metaphors and so on... Everything is horrendously obvious, and so stereotypical. The song itself is lovely and I am eager to hear what Lillywhite and the band have done with it, but Dave really needs to put more effort into the lyrics. That's nothing new, though, and it was expected.

PS: Dave's improvised lyrical intros are constantly better than his written lyrics.

That is exactly how I feel about the lyrics. I want to hear it with the full band but I really don't like the lyrics. They seem forced

solid song, always hard to grasp new music with DMB until you see it live and have about 20 listens. I remember going into Vegas shows dry with Spaceman, Seven, etc. really, REALLY excited to get this summer going..............

Yes, yes! We went from painting amazing pictures to lyrics full of cliche and stereotype.

Just look at Typical and Cry Freedom next to "You and Me" and "Mercy"

I'm with you.......half this fan base can go to hell, there's nothing that would make them happy, and most just like to be unhappy. that's right, I said it, go to hell. i don't remember standing around people at shows that are bitching about the words, or the tone, or whatever. MAYBE I'm lucky, but everyone at the shows are having a really good time.

for those bitching that DMB isn't what it was in 1998, versus today. well, I don't know what to tell you, but either are you.

I went into it not expecting spoon so I don't think it's that bad. The melody and vocal delivery was nice. Guitar riff is good which doesn't suprise me. Lyrics as usual are shaky.

The well is about dry in that category and unfortunately it's a huge part of things

I think the music full band could sound really good.

The first verse just seems forced. The chorus is actually ok.

Just don't like the lyrics to the verses. Seems forced

Pretty much this. Somewhere along the line he lost his lyrical touch. Happens to a lot of artists. I hope the music is interesting, and I think it will be. Mercy us a pretty song.

I mean, this band had a 9-10 year run where they wrote 70-80 mostly fantastic songs. I am eternally thankful for that. To me, everything else is just gravy. I'm really hoping this album kicks my ass, but even if it doesn't I am not going to get my panties in a bunch. I still think this album will be their fourth best.

Yeah this is the first single in awhile from them where i don't feel skeptical about the rest of the album.

It does have a llmu feel to it in how the riff is. It doesn't sound like it musically but how the strings are hit, it's similar. Dave will always be great at making new riffs on guitar. He has a style that is to be applauded

Personally, I thought the song was pretty good. It probably wasn't the best song to put out there first, but I recognize the appeal given the president's appearance.

Also, I'm reading a lot of negativity on the boards, but according to the poll, 7 people like this song for every 1 that doesn't. That's a pretty good start compared to previous attempts.

After about 5 listens I gotta say I really like it so far. It flows beautifully and I like Dave's guitar work on it. I can't wait to see what the full band version sounds like. I think this new could be very promising if the rest of the songs are of the same calibur.

My only problem with Mercy's lyrics are the inconsistency, which has definitely been a problem for Dave. There were some great lines within the song, and some I'd rather forget about.

Hell even take a look at you and me.

"You and I are not tied to the ground,
Not falling, but rising like rolling around."


That is a great line...within a pile of crap. But obviously music and melody are very important and Mercy has a great melody, and with Lillywhite, I'm sure the rest of the band killed it, which will leave us with a real solid tune.

I definitely do not agree with using it Dave solo as the first thing people heard from the record though, bad marketing. It's just not a buzz generator, especially if they really think they are sitting on something special. That solo should not have been the lead dog. First impressions can be hard to change.
