Re: Tour De France

Pogacar has all the makings of being able to make a run at 5 tour victories. So damn young! He's clearly fixed the ITT weakness that he may have had prior to this year. I hope Bernal is back at the tour next year as between him and Pogacar, and maybe Vingegaard (way to take every opportunity to show your potential when your leader abandons!) it could be some very heavy competition for the next 5-10 years. The new generation of cyclists is incredible to watch.

    That he's clean.

We just haven't witnessed some of the stuff we saw from him in a hot minute. He looked unphased on some of the most brutal stages.

Maybe that says more about the other talent in the peloton, I don't know.

I just got weird vibes watching him.

    Re: Tour De France

Fair enough, the history of cycling has not been kind to stand out performers and their cleanliness. I do think that the pro peloton is the cleanest right now that its been in decades, the bio passport protocols are very difficult to defeat.

And I think to collapse of cyclists in their early to mid 30s points to athletes that had chemical assistance early in their careers and now cant perform at that high level once weaned off.

Vingegaard was able to drop Pogacar, however briefly, a couple of times most notably on Ventoux, and Vengegaards time on Ventoux while fast was also assisted by a tailwind for roughly half of it. And it was still several minutes off the fastest doping times (all due respect to Il Pirata but that 1994 time was likely doped to the gills). Future doping controls will tell a more complete story, but for now it looks to me like a batch of young physio freaks that have been untainted by doping doing their thing. Pogacar effectively got his wining margin this year on one stage (the 8th) with a wild attack much further out than expected. Had Vingegaard not still been riding in support of Roglic it would be interesting to see how much time he would have lost. That 8th stage was all kinds of chaos, which is great and much more like cycling used to be. Prior to the juiced up mega teams riding a fast pace up front all day and sending thier GC favorite to take 20-30 seconds from 3-4km out.

    Now mechanical doping....

I was thinking of this the other day. We always assumed that doping helped everyone. But what if actually it helped cyclists in their late 20's the most and actually provided an advantage to older riders over younger riders assuming all were doping. Maybe younger cyclists got robbed of some tours the last 20 years. Think about this, the last 3 riders who won have been like 22, 21 and 22. Egan and Pogo twice.

I just put my head in the sand and enjoy the racing. I’ll save being disappointed for later when/if people get caught. I find it’s the best way for me to enjoy the sport.

I think this Olympic race could turn out pretty entertaining but I can’t bring myself to stay up for it. Will see the results tomorrow I guess. Really pulling for Woods but I’d be surprised if he gets a result in this stacked field.

It had been so long since we had a properly wet Paris-Roubaix, and that was a ton of fun to watch! Bummed that MvdP couldn't pull it off, but what a race.

Huge bummer about Bernal, but maybe its not too serious and its early enough he can return by the Tour?

Just over a month to go until Strade Bianche and the start to a proper spring cycling campaign.

Getting way pumped up for the Tour to start next week. Great series of spring races this year, and lots of riders on great form. Obviously it's Pogacar race to lose, but the Tour has a way of making the obvious seem impossible. Roglic looks to be peaking coming into the Tour (and lots of ITT miles this year could be great for him), but also so does Vingegaard which could make for funky team dynamics.

Bardet and Lopez dropping out at the Giro could be a bad sign for those two. Guillaume Martin looked pretty good at the Giro, so maybe this can be a breakout year for him.

The Day 1 ITT will help set the pecking order early on and I love a short ITT to get things started. And the middle of weeks 2 and 3 look absolutely brutal. There is a ton of time to gain or lose.

I don't Ving is going to give anyone a race. I would like to be wrong it would be more exciting but right now it's Pogo and Roglic. Vingo was only 40 seconds behind in the Dauphine though...

Hard to play out a stage better than that strategically from Jumbo. The transition that Wout Van Aert has made from 'Cross to the Road has been spectacular. He's dangerous in so many places, and tomorrows cobbles play to his strengths again!
