Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

I was listening to Live at Wrigley, which I attended and was one of the most disappointing two-night stands I've seen. Upon listening, I was reminded why.

It's not that the band isn't playing with fire or energy. If anything, there's TOO much. Most songs are played too fast (especially a frenetic Two Step and Cornbread). But the biggest thing: there's no space or room to breathe. It's constant noise, with no dynamics. It's exhausting to listen to. Every solo from Tim and Jeff is a bit of showy one-upsmanship. Not to mention, the setlist is lacking.

I remember leaving that show thinking a break in 2011 was probably for the best. I think they started to turn things back around with the Caravan shows.

I couldn’t agree more. Starting when Tim joined in 2008, the loudness and constant sound was unbearable. Wrigley is a perfect example. However, it’s gotten better in the last 5-6 years. Nowhere near 2008-2010 bad.

Also, I’ll take a fast cornbread to get the room for last stop. I remember thinking they were FLYING through cornbread and it was just to beat the curfew for last stop.

For me, the big turning point back to a nice balance was 2013 (Deer Creek 2-nighter was great), and I think they've found a good balance. Buddy has helped as well, as I enjoyed most 2018 and 2019 shows.

More dynamic performances mean the heavy hitters like Billies hit THAT much harder. It was good at Wrigley, but didn't pack the same punch because everything around it was turned up to 11, too.

Those are interesting opinions, and it is not the first time I hear something like that. Somewhere around, someone called those frenetic shows as the heavy metal stuff.

I went to N1 of Wrigley Field, and I have to say, it was one of the lower points for me too. I didn’t like the show at all. 2010 was probably the worst year ever.

Sometimes, too much energy, means No-energy

This band being compared to heavy metal in any shape or form: good grief.

2008 and 2009 were good sound wise. 2010 is when it really became a wall of noise. The last few years with Buddy are a lot better

I like him overall, there is some stuff like what he does on Everyday I'm not a fan of but don't really mind one way or another, playing organ instead of piano on LIOG just drives me up a wall. It's such a beautiful jam and screams piano, I think the organ sounds terrible on it and wrecks what should be a highlight of every show the song is played at.

Between Buddy’s organ and no violin, Lie in Our Graves is a tough sell these days, unfortunately.

LIOG was always my favorite with Boyd + butch. A lot of people didn’t like the slower smooth jazz feel but I ate it up. Miss it.

Lie in Our Graves was right in Butch’s sweet spot. That was my favorite contribution of his. One of my all time favorites is 7/16/00.

Just listened to LT2 yesterday, and it has one of my favorite LIOG's. Great Boyd solo and some nice Butch at the end.

Still haven't heard it post-Boyd, and honestly would be fine if I don't.

I think The Tim solo fits pretty well in place of the Boyd solo on LIOG but I agree with piano over Organ for Buddy’s solo spot. I also miss the traditional Stefan/Carter little section they’ve left out since Buddy joined. Still one of my favorite tunes.

Nancies actually sounds really good right now. Rashawn's muted trumpet adds a cool jazzy feel to the song which is fresh. And Timmy's solo works well here imo.

Yea dude both The Stone and Nancies sound great in this era. LIOG can go either way, but I have a feeling that if they bust it out this next tour, they may try some new stuff with it. I would love to see Buddy on keys for it. That being said, the solo he took on the one in C-Ville back in 2018 was otherworldly and legit made me a fan of the organ.

The band has improved greatly since Boyd left. 2010-2017 was a dark era for DMB shows.

No version of any song that originally featured Roi should ever be in the "best version of (said song)" conversation if it's not a version that featured Roi.

    Period.

There is no "greatest version" of Two Step after June of 2008. No "greatest version" of Jimi Thing after June 2008. The Dreaming Tree. Spoon. What Would You Say. DEFINITELY #34. Insert any song you want. The "best version" of those songs will have had LeRoi Moore on the saxophone.

    Well that’s an odd take.

Two different saxophonists and they both bring a unique approach to each song.

I agree with that take TBH. Love Jeff, but Roi brought a special kind of magic.

The czar of DMB has spoken! The "greatest version" of So Right has Jeff Coffin playing on it, and that's okay!
