Kevin Smith (Director) Appreciation Thread

So there have been a few Kevin Smith threads about specific things he has done (a certain podcast or film) but I thought I'd try and make them all into one cohesive thread where we could talk about everything past and future. His films (Clerks to Red State, and his upcoming Hit Somebody), his gigantic podcast network, his Q&As, his comics, everything. Do you guys have a favorite film and/or podcast? Why? Stories about the man? Anything.

And I guess, because I just have a feeling someone will bring it up, we can discuss his merit as a director and writer.

I'm a big fan, I saw Clerks and Clerks 2 first, but it was Chasing Amy and Mallrats that turned me into a full-on fanboy. I never miss his Q&As at ComicCon, and have recently started drvving up to LA to watch them record podcasts. Basically what I'm saying is I'm just a tiny lil bit obsessed haha.

Babble the fuck on!

    question for the OP:

Did you specify "director" in case anyone mistook this for a thread appreciating the part time running back for the detroit lions?

I would recommend Red State. It's awesome. It's completely different from anything he's ever done. I would say see it for that reason alone. Why don't you want to see it?

And Cop Out...yeah leave it. I had such high hopes for the film too. Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith? But...it did not pan out.

I was there when that video got shot! It was great. His Q&As are on par with his films sometimes.

Looking back maybe it wasn't the smartest thing The only reason I did it is because my brother and his girlfriend are huge Lions fans, and so whenever I talk to them about Mr. Smith, I have to clarify which one. Guess it's just burnt into my subconcious.

I would highly recommend Clerks 2. It's on par with those. And Dogma, of course.

I think Dogma is highly under rated. Its the most well-thought out of Smith's movies imo. The whole concept is outside the box and works perfectly

I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. Here is how I would rank his movies that I have seen

    1. Chasing Amy
    2. Mallrats
    3. Clerks 2
    4. Clerks
    5. Dogma
    6. Zac and Miri
    7. Jay and Silent Bob
    8. Jersey Girl

Though I have watched the first Evening with Kevin Smith probably more than any of his movies. If anyone wants to kill 20 minutes.....

Aw why do you think Red State was mediocre? I loved it. And not just because I love Kevin Smith (because I can bash his movies as well...I mean did you see Cop Out?)

I know I love Evening with, and I love how almost all of it is on YouTube. It's the only anything of his I don't own. Well that and Cop Out.

You should! A classic. Though a lot of people I talk to are put off by the black and white, which I don't understand.

certainly CHASING AMY has gotten a lot of ink over the years as being Smith's true masterpiece, such a complete film in many ways, and I do think it's pretty damn good myself, but I think after all this time I'm still going with DOGMA as his best overall. Love that flick.

and I suppose I applaud him for trying to do with Red State something so incredibly far out of his comfort zone for anything he'd done before, but at the same time... eeek.

I mentioned in that post that I saw half of Cop Out, and while it was shit, I tend to ignore it due to him not writing it. His writing is usually the best thing about his films imo. I feel like he had very little to do with film, even though he directed it probably just took the paycheck and told everybody to do whatever the hell they wanted while he got stoned off his ass in his trailer

red state was not very good. in fact, you're probably the only person on here I know that liked it. I thought it started out well and had some potential, but the 2nd half was just a complete clusterfuck that I grew more and more disinterested in, not to mention the characters were shit. who was i supposed to be rooting for again? I kinda wish Kevin Smith had ended it the way he originally wanted to end it. then I probably would have given him some props for going completely balls to the wall crazy. the ending he stuck with though, was just lame. I guess I still give him props for attempting something so different than what he usually does, but this is probably his worst film (though I still haven't seen Jersey Girl, who knows what I'll think of that)

I love Kevin Smith and have always been a big fan of his films. Dogma takes the number one spot for me. Surprisingly though, I do not own any of his films.

Clerks will always be one of my all time favorite comedies, and easily Smith's best movie, IMO. (I think it tends to get under-rated by people who go back and watch it after seeing his later movies with bigger budgets and more name actors.)

Perhaps I should give Zack and Miri another shot, watched it once and it didn't do much for me.

Hmm well different strokes. I really dug it. Though I do think he should have spent more time developing characters, I'll give you that. It was one of the only problems I had with the film. And even though I liked it a lot, I definitely wouldn't call it his best film. I'd put it 5th tied with Mallrats.

And I agree with not really blaming Cop Out on him because he didn't write it. I'm really interested to see Hit Somebody, not only because it's his last movie, but because it's a hockey comedy, which seems perfect for him. Though he's switched the script length twice now, first it was one movie, then it was a two-parter, now it's back to one...it'll be interesting to see the final project.

Dogma is a brilliant film and as far as I'm concerned, his best. Growing up Catholic I think I appreciated it more, just for the way it pokes at what the religion's dogmatic laws represent.

Hearing him talk about it is so interesting. I grew up going to Christian school, so I sort of connected with it on that level, but I showed it to my friend (who grew up Catholic) and she had the same reaction. For a movie with a rubber poop monster, it's a powerful flick.

Mall Rats and Dogma are amazing. Zack and Miri Make A Porno was not, at all.

Yeah it wasn't great. I mean I liked it. But it I think it's the second worst of the films he's written and directed. It didn't help that I don't like Seth Rogen and/or Elizabeth Banks. But I did think the scenes with Justin Long were top notch. I guess with an okay script, and ok actors you get an okay movie. Go figure.

Yeah! I have my tickets for that! I think it's cool we can tweet him questions. I'm interested to see how it's going to work. Like if he's going to do some from twitter some from the audience, or all from twitter, I'm very curious.

Don't really care for Justin Long but he was good in Zack And Miri. Seth Rogen is absolutely terrible.
