Re: Can't Stop loving Can't Stop!

I'm one of the most positive people in the world where DMB is concerned. I even like the Big Whiskey songs in concert.

I don't see why they Can't Stop playing that gargantuan piece of horse shit.

The band has to notice the difference in reaction when this song starts as opposed to almost any other song. I mean they just have to.

I enjoy it. It's not a fantastic song, but it's good. It used to be just ok, but it's evolved into a good song. Again, it's not a masterpiece, but I enjoy listening to it, and I enjoy hearing it live.

They do. Don't you remember during recent years past right before playing Old Dirt Hill, Dave would say something like "I don't give a damn if you don't like this song, I'm playing it anyway" just to spite everyone who doesn't like it to send out an immature "fuck you."

It's a bit hard not to notice 90% of the audience sit down or file out of their seats to take a piss during a song no one likes.

Honestly I feel like its because they know that people are going to come to their shows no matter what, Dave probably figures people are going to come either way so fuck it I'll play what I feel like playing.

Two different shows I've been to (I think '08 / '09) had well over half of the people just mulling around, sitting, or talking loudly amongst themselves during Old Dirt Hill and Steady As We Go.

EDIT : My God, even listen to a taper pull that has ODH on it from '08, you can hear the life being sucked out of the audience when it starts.

Happens a lot at the end of Bartender. After about two minutes of penny whistle I see plenty od people sit or start conversations.

Not all leaving, but a mix of leaving to piss, starting conversations and not paying attention, sitting, etc. Those combined make up the "90%."

yeah, but that happens at times when they play songs like cry freedom, lover lay down, and i've even seen it for kit kat jam. i'm just saying, crowd reaction does not equal song quality. if it did, the community would love cornbread and a few others that seem to be despised around here.

This isn't Can't Stop related, but after #41 is played on 5-22, Dave tells the crowd, "here is something new" to which like two guys yell, "Woo!" while everyone else is dead silent - almost as if to say in their heads, "FML."

not backing the band's decision to play it. i'm just saying the crowd reaction is irrelevant to the quality of the song.

well the song is a disgrace, and the reaction is usually max exodus, or nothing at all.

the song has no reason to exist at a live show.

Chances are if the crowd looks disinterested the song is probably shit. Or it's just a shitty crowd. In Can't Stop's case it's reason #1.

allright, if it's understood that the reaction is bad, than we should all be clamoring for cornbread to be played because the reaction is so good.

    right?

well if you read my first part i said the song was a disgrace anyway. why would i want that?

i dont normally care about crowd reactions, but its hilarious how the place clears to the bathrooms and beer lines when its played.

Casual fans seem to love Cornbread. That doesn't mean it is a great song. Most casuals and hardcores hate Can't Stop.

the place probably clears for satellite sometimes, too. that song is not a disgrace and is in fact a great song. thats just a case of this new fanbase not liking slow stuff.

This is very true. The song is poorly written, and is (hopefully) not on an album. At least Cornbread gets the crowd going.

Though when I saw this tripe at Blossom 2010, the girl in front of me actually seemed excited to hear it as she was getting her groove on and singing along. I was mildly disappointed in that sight. Outside of a somewhat funky bass riff (and now some good horns I guess), this song has no redeeming qualities. You know what other song has a funky bass riff, good horns and actually gets the crowd going? BOWA.

but that can't be the sole reason. i understand people not liking it. i don't like every song selected for every show. the crowd reaction can't just work in a way that justifies what you're saying. if it did, you would be calling for more cornbread.

I never said I want Can't Stop gone just because of the crowd reaction. Not sure where you are getting this. The song is shit.
