Re: ON THE ROAD - Tell Us about your Dave Matthews Adventures

Most of my DMB shows have been road trips...since the first 24 years of my life was spent in Utah where they don't play annually (I take some offense to the "godawful terrible Salt Lake City" remark above!) and the last 16 years I've lived in Nashville (the home venue Starwood Amp closed the year after I moved here).

Nothing will top 2018 as far as DMB trips go. After my first trip to Camden earlier that summer, I won the big Prizeo contest that year which included airfare, hotel & garden box tickets for 2 to the end-of-tour Hollywood Bowl show on Sept. 10 (and a post-show meet & greet with Dave backstage, and a custom Rockbridge guitar, and a digital SLR camera, and a weeklong safari trip to Kenya in 2019!).

My wife and I had already planned on traveling to Chicago on Saturday Sept. 8, to see the Univ. of Utah football team play Northern Illinois. We spent the morning and afternoon in downtown Chicago (Art Institute, Sears Tower, Cloud Gate) and then drove to DeKalb for the football game that night. Sunday morning we flew back to Nashville for a previously-scheduled event, and then late afternoon that same day we flew out to LA.

We had a great time in Hollywood doing touristy stuff, and on Monday evening we picked up the HB tix & pre-show lounge passes at will call. However they didn't give us any info about the post-show M&G. The contact at Red Light Mgmt. did connect me with Brian Calhoun (who had come out to present the Rockbridge guitar) and we set up logistics of when to meet after the show. After the encore we headed to meet up with Brian, and we walked right past Julia Roberts and her entourage. For what seemed like the longest time we couldn't find Brian, and it felt like we were going to miss our chance. But it all worked out: we found Brian who had the guitar with him, and he got us backstage. While waiting for Dave at the M&G, I met Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, Simpsons) and John Alagia. Once Dave came out he met with all the other folks first...Brian kept us until the end. Dave was really nice, and we talked about the Kenya trip (since he had done a similar one with his family in 2017). He was gracious enough to play the Rockbridge a little bit...he played the first couple of notes of an old African tune, which I commented sounded a lot like Recently. He played the sets of notes from both songs, and described how they're different. He said Recently is the most African-sounding tune he's written.

In Dec. 2018 I went to D.C. for the show at Capital One Arena with my best friend who lives in the D.C. area. I had worked it out with my friend's wife, to surprise him with the two Charlottesville shows after D.C. He thought he was taking me back to the airport, but once we got there I told him that we were going on to C-ville. He was so stoked! But once we got underway it started snowing. We tried to take a "shortcut" from Reagan Airport to C-ville...and ended up going through a lot of back roads that had gotten pretty snowy/icy. Fortunately we made it ok and still in time before the start of the N1 show. Enjoyed Bodo's Bagels the next morning, got to be part of the Rockbridge "factory tour" in the afternoon, and then enjoyed N2!

Wow that is so great! I've never met anyone who's been the final 1st place winner of one of those awesome package deals, that just sounds so unbelievably fun, and I especially like the details about Dave playing the guitar you won and talking about the African song he played & Recently, that is such a precious memory!

Cool, what a fun experience! And all expenses paid as well... can't beat that dagnabbit!

Stand Up Album release show at Roseland 2005

Freshman year of college at a small(ish) school in CT. DMB announces their album release party at Roseland. Me being a broke college kid I figure the casino is the best shot of raising funds. I head up to Mohegan sun about 2 weeks before the show and within an hour I'm up around $2,000... happy dance time.
I buy a ticket for $300 of a website that shall not be named and we're good to go. HOWEVER, I come to find the final for one my classes is on the day after the show at 830am... shit
    Lets play spot the lie...
i study hard, go to the show, have the time of my life and crush the test.
I ended up studying casually, absolutely went to the show and had what i still consider to be one of the best DMB experiences (out of close to 80 shows) of my life but most definitely did not crush the test. Failed the test, had to retake the class during the summer which actually didnt turn out too bad, considering how easy the class was at a CC.
Most importantly, made an incredible memory seeing one of my favorite bands, in one of the smallest venues they've played in close to 20 years.

This is an awesome story! Fuck that test man, you made the right decision. Seeing them in a venue that small is a once and a lifetime opportunity. Your story has inspired me to revisit that show on YouTube. I remember watching it live and the energy of that crowd was off the charts when they opened with Hello Again.

Re: ON THE ROAD - Tell Us about your Dave Matthews Adventures

Great thread idea, lots of great stories here. Fun to read after the past 12 months. I don't have anything crazy, just an incredible roadtrip. My girlfriend and I finally planned to knock the Gorge off of the bucket list in 2014. We drove from Pennsylvania, visiting the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier on the way. Stayed in some really cool little towns along the way, visited great restaurants and breweries, etc. Met up with some friends at the Gorge. Cresting "the hill" and getting the view of the venue was a great culmination of the journey. I wish that wasn't during the two sets era, but the shows were still a blast. Drove straight home over the course of three days with a visit to Three Floyds Brewing Co. at the end of day 2 being the oasis in the desert. We were just out of collage and weren't yet established in our jobs; we had nothing on our minds except the trip. We've since seen D&T in Mexico, traveled all over the US, and to Europe twice since then, but we consider that to be the best trip we've ever taken. Crazy how three concerts were the reason it happened.

I'm still astounded that you just decided to win the $$ at a casino and then actually did it! If I tried something like that... I'd lose it all no doubt.

Great story, so glad it worked out for you!

Interestingly, it was 10 yrs before your show that I stumbled on DMB by accident (I won tix to see Big Head Todd & knew nothing about DMB) and of course being crazy about them right away, I immediately went to several more shows. As my birthday tomorrow comes up, I realize it was TWENTY SIX YEARS TO THE DAY that I saw the 1st of 2 DMB shows at Roseland. It was an epic 2 days. And they'd done I think Letterman during the day before the 1st one so after the show the band & guests gathered around one of othe Roseland bars and watched Letterman on the bar t.v. to see their appearance, so I watched that with them.

Since I lived in Boston at the time, I'm chalking that up to a road trip experience too.... Crazy, thanks for reminding me of the dates!

Re: ON THE ROAD - Tell Us about your Dave Matthews Adventures

Great thread. My highlight: Blossom 2008. Long story that is going to sound made up, but I swear every word is true.

Summer after freshman year of college. Finally convinced one of my buddies to tag along to a show. He was/is a huge Phish fan, and we spent our summers going to as many different shows as we could, but he was never into DMB. Somewhere along the line though he heard a live version of Seek Up and decided he'd come to a show in hopes of seeing it. We pack up the truck and drive out to Cuyahoga Falls. Instead of getting a hotel, and in hopes of saving a few bucks, we decide to just find a spot in the park to throw up a tent and camp. Looking at a map of the park we find an area that seems "campable" and is only ~1 mile through the woods from the amphitheater. We think "pitch a tent, have a few beers, nice little brisk hike to the show, no problem." What could go wrong?

First part of the plan goes smooth, camp set up, beers drank, ready to go. Keep in mind this is 2008 - no GPS, smart phones, etc. We just took a look at the printed out map, figured "alright, one mile southwest, middle of Ohio, shouldn't take us more than a half hour" and we set off into the woods. What ensued then was quite possibly the hardest hike of my entire life. Since then I've hiked mountains, canyons, you name it...nothing compares to what we found in Cuyahoga Valley National Park that day. First sign of trouble happened maybe 15 minutes in. Come to find out, the park had experienced several days of rain prior to our arrival, so everything was wet and muddy. On the way down a hill my buddy hit a mud patch, slips, sends his last beer sailing into the air, and rolls what had to be 50 yards down the hill. Think Chris Farley in Black Sheep. Just mangled. When I get down to him, he's shaken up but laughs it off. Covered in mud, he decides to take his shirt off and put it in his back pocket as we push forward. Few minutes later, we reach a stream. Second sign of trouble, as neither of us noted any streams or rivers on the map. "Oh well, no turning back now," as we walk into the water. We make it across, but we're soaked up to our thighs. We continue on, only to find what could only be described as a cliff. Maybe 20 feet high, again "no turning back now" so we start climbing. Midway up, I lose my footing and slip down, reaching for something to catch myself I grab a bush (Chris Farley Part 2). Only issue - its thorns.

We make it up the to the top, sit down to take a breather, and realize a few things: First, my friends shirt is gone - likely swept away in the stream. Second, the tickets that were in my pocket are absolutely soaked from said stream. No way they'll get us into the show. Third, when we set up camp earlier I had chopped some wood with a hatchet and then slipped it into my belt. It was still in my belt. How the hell am I going to get past security with a damn hatch on my hip? Fourth, from the thorns, my hands are bleeding, and the blood has now made it to both my shirt and pants. Fifth, this leisurely half hour hike is now taking over an hour and a half and the venue is nowhere in sight. We figure, for about the tenth time "Oh well, no turning back now" so we push forward.

The next half hour is another series of peaks and valleys - literally and figuratively - and one more stream, but we eventually crest a hill and hear the faint sound of music in the distance. "We're close!" At this point it's about 10 minutes until showtime, so we hurry forward. Bursting out of the woods after what felt like three days lost in the wilderness, we hit the chain link fence surrounding Blossom. Unfortunately, we're nowhere near the gates. In fact, we have emerged right behind the VIP pavilion - and right in sight of the dozens of people calmly enjoying their pre-show rituals there. You would have thought they saw Bigfoot. Two guys, one shirtless, one covered in blood, both soaking wet and caked in mud...if anyone here happens to have been there that day, I would love to hear your take on that moment. Anyway, to avoid anyone alerting security, we back back into the woods and follow the fence towards the lawn. After just a couple minutes of following the fence we reach what can only be called an act of God. We come upon a gate at the top of the lawn...open and unlocked and with no one in sight. Thundergun style "No hesitation, no surrender!" we push through the gate onto the lawn - hatchet and all. We've officially made it. Now to get to our seats without raising any red flags.

With just minutes until showtime, we go right to the bathrooms. I rinse off the blood, my buddy starts scanning the crowd for his best chance at bumming a shirt - finds a guy with a button up and a white T underneath. Like an absolute psycho, he waits until the guy finishes his business and cuts him off on his way to the sink - "$5 for your undershirt, right now, please." Stunned, either by the look of my friend or the boldness of the ask, the guy agrees. Boom, now we're both "clean" and clothed. Time to get to the seats.

We grab a couple drinks and make it to our seats just as the lights go down. Opening song at that show? Seek Up. Could not have scripted it better. Ended up being an absolute great show and since then we have probably seen another 5 or 6 DMB shows together.

After the show we walked the roads back to our spot. Took a few hours, but we made it back in one piece. I'll never understand where that type of terrain came from, what took so long, and how we misread the map so bad, but I don't think we could have botched it any more outside of just never even finding the venue. Just a ridiculous pre-show debacle that I'll never forget.

And even when they schedule shows there, it's a roll of the dice if they actually happen lol

This may take the cake for my favorite "Getting to the show" story...ever! Well done, glad you're a) still alive!; b) made the show; and c) made it back to your campsite! Must've made waiting in long car lines to get into a venue seem like the biggest cakewalk ever after that...

This band, and the associated travels to see them, have given me enough stories to write a book.

Yeah. Albany is SO much better than Hartford.

Not a particular story but some cool stuff to share.

From 2004 ish to 2015 ish I had incredible luck negotiating Pitt bracelets from the WH tent. Id buy a lawn ticket and as the show would start the folks working the WH tent would start to pack up. I'd hang and make small talk to feel them out. Just as they'd wrap up I'd offer them some $ for 2 wristbands. It actually worked probably 80% of the time. Most I ever paid was $100 for 2, often times a $20 would work, most commonly id have to offer $50, still an INCREDIBLE deal. It worked at SPAC, Mansfield, Hartford, Camden, Jones Beach like an absolute charm. That plan, paired with the photoshopped print out tickets, made getting a great spot quite easy. I have a massive setlist collection from just spending the show right next to the soundboard or camera guys. If you're cool, dont bother them and wait for the right time, you can grab a setlist almost every time. They know why you're there, so if youre not hounding them, they'll hook you up after the encore.

I worked at LiveNation for around 6 months in 2016 before having my whole team laid off (which really sucked). However I kept both LN credentials I had been issued, which have paid dividends to say the least. The pass allows myself and a friend into any LN show w a lawn. I've used it for countless shows, often times the security is so flustered or unfamiliar with the pass they wave myself and whomever im with right in. Its gotten me into the pit at various shows, depending on the security situation. It also affords me to park in the VIP lot free of charge, at any venue.

I've been incredibly fortunate and for that I'm extremely grateful and have tried to pay it forward. I try to miracle people whenever possible, handed off several setlists, a few drumsticks etc.
    always Pay it forward!

I don’t do any crazy expensive traveling because I’m still a student/entry level, but I have enough to see DMB 2-3 times each year. I’m from Massachusetts so my home venue is Mansfield and Gilford (Gilford is way better). A few years ago, i decided I had to see what SPAC was all about and I went for Dave and Tim. Since then, I now consider SPAC a can’t miss and luckily I have some friends in NY. The area/vibe of Saratoga Springs is awesome. The fans are just so much better. Although SPAC is my favorite venue, I will never forget August of 2007 when I went to the first show in Mansfield. I had just graduated HS, gotten my license and it was my first concert ever and we showed up right when tailgating started and were among the last to leave after the show. We met so many awesome people and I was hooked. Haven’t missed a year since. I hope to make the Gorge some day.

I've throughly enjoyed living in your home state for 8 years! We actually need more people to believe that about SLC, insane housing market here right now. The '19 West Valley show was my first in 5 years- first time in the pit thanks to my close buddy who gave me my first dose of DMB back in '08 in our home city of... take a guess... HARTFORD

From road trips to the Gorge in '13 from Denver, and '14 from Park City/ SLC, my favorite road trip was in '11 to Randall's Island. My college roommate and I thought it was best to not miss any of the first party weekends on campus of our senior year- so naturally, we thought Sunday night would be best. After staying up until 4am Saturday night, we left Burlington, VT at 7am. Grabbed that same buddy at his school in Hartford around 11am and somehow, he was in worse shape than us. Took the train in from Stamford and had a blast at N3 of the last Caravan stop (big shoes to fill after an unreal weekend in Atlantic City earlier that summer). Amazing show. Got back to our car in in Stamford much too late, got our buddy back to Hartford; and after a few VT highway pit stops to wake up (que the Super Troopers quotes) I'm happy to say we got back to campus safely at sunrise. Crushed a test in an 8:30am class, my roommate slept in past his 3:00pm class. Worth it

This band and all the good times, damn. Thanks for all the great stories, can't wait to make some more

So, since I live in Europe, it's kinda hard to see DMB live, but they are touring here more often since 2007.

My first two shows were Dave & Tim in march 2007 (Berlin and Cologne), then full band show in may (Dublin). In 2009 I saw them in Paris and Amsterdam, and I added three more shows to my list in 2010: Berlin, Vienna and Stockholm.
2015 gave me the first show in my country, which is Poland. Well... unfortunately the setlist was nothing really special, but still +1 for me.
I saw Dave and Time twice in 2017 (Berlin and Vienna again), then - 2 years ago - I went for a little trip to Hamburg and Berlin to see DMB live, then I caught them in Poland again.

So: 14 years, 14 shows, 10 cities, 7 countries. Such an amazing time!

I have SO MUCH ENVY for your roadtripping for shows! I have always seen shows of my 4 or 5 favorite artists in other cities as good reasons to both go to a show, visit friends, but also check out new places I've never been to. The US is so big in terms of distance, it's a 5 3/4 hours flight from East Coast to West Coast. But in Europe (East & West), at least the last time I was there, with budget airlines like Ryanair (does that still exist?) or even just long drives, you get to be in different COUNTRIES traveling far fewer hours, and that just amazes me.

I've seen a few US artists in Europe, but not many and always in the context of a bigger trip I was taking anyway. But to be able to just go for a show and check out other European cities... I am outrageously envious! And happy for you!

Yep, it's still here and doing a great job
And I love travels, I love flying. I had a great time before covid19, because if you're smart you can find a flight for 10 Euros (which is +/- 12$) one way, so I literally spent 2018 and 2019 up in the air. Fjords in Norway? No problem! Weekend in Paris - you got it! Coffee and pizza in Italy? I'm there! And since I had this special promo super duper ultra credit card, sometimes I travelled for free

Wow!! Ok, way to rub the jealousy in LOL! But really that is incredible!

You must feel a bit like I did about Covid... I went to a ton (for me, these days, with a kid) of concerts in 2018 and 2019, getting to see all 4 of my most favorite touring acts in a year in multiple spots (Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Glen Hansard, and Hozier).

So kinda like you with your amazing travel and use of budget airlines (so happy to hear Ryanair are still around!), as horrific as everything about Covid has been, I at least felt like I'd really made the most out of the 2 years prior. I saw my last show the Monday before we went into lockdown on Friday in March, and already on that Monday things were getting very weird and scary and I wondered if that would be my last show for awhile. But had no idea it would be THIS LONG.

Glad you traveled so much and sounds like you'll be getting right back in the game again when it's safe. Maybe we'll meet in Paris at a show sometime! Or Dublin, which is actually the 1st international trip I hope to take when it's safe...

Thanks for all the great stories, can't wait to make some more
Good to hear you're enjoying Utah! I haven't been back there in 7 years or so...I wonder how much has changed since I was there last?

That road trip sounds incredible. Burning the candle at both ends, but definitely seemed worth it. I was at the Gorge in '13 as well! My first, but hopefully not my last, Gorge trip.

Thanks! The mix of mountains with the city- there's nothing like it, I love it here. Downtown SLC is changing before our eyes- we can see cranes for 5 or 6 new pseudo "high rises" from our window. Not to mention how Lehi has become a city of its own.

I, too, am hoping to make another Gorge trip. Thanks for the shout regarding my story, fun to think back on it. And here's to hoping DMB will play Salt Lake more than once every six years!

Re: ON THE ROAD - Tell Us about your Dave Matthews Adventures

Not funny at the time, but pretty funny looking back on it now. 2014 DMB at Starlake, 25 years old. My dad's friend buys a box there for the whole summer and gets tickets to every show. So naturally I get that for when DMB comes to town, it held 8 people at the time. So the girl I was dating at the time and myself go with my parents, my dad's friend and his girlfriend, and a friend of mine and his wife all are in the box together. My girlfriend, my friend and his wife, and I arrive early to tailgate and hang with our friends the standard start of any hometown DMB show for me. I had a few drinks nothing crazy, my parents and their friends get there around 5:30 to have some time before the first set of the two set tour that summer. We all headed into the show together, grabbed a couple drinks and just hung in the box until the show started. The acoustic set was pretty relaxed we were all just enjoying the show, singing and dancing a little bit. In the set break we all went to the VIP bar for a beer and to go to the bathroom before the electric set started. At this point, I would say I had a good buzz, wasn't drunk or anything like that. I never get drunk, drunk for DMB shows. The electric set starts and the energy in our box picked up as well. We were all dancing having a good time, my parents loved being there with me seeing in my element, this was our first show we went to together and honestly probably our last lol. I was sitting on the railing of the box between songs joking that I'm going to jump if they play Jimi Thing lol. The box sits probably about 7-8 feet above the walkway below. Next song comes on and I went to stand up after making the joke because it was Jimi Thing and when I stood I tripped on a freestanding chair that was in the box and made that joke a reality when I flew over the railing of the box. My friend tried to save my fall, but he ended up coming out with me, luckily I broke his fall and he landed on his feet. I fell head first to the ground and the last thing I remember was the sound of my head hitting the pavement. About 20-30 seconds of laying there I come to, my mom was screaming out of the box, my girlfriend in tears and my friend picking me up asking me if I was ok. I shrugged my shoulders, said I was fine, popped right back up and went back into the box and continued on enjoying the show. My mom thought I was dead, my girlfriend was super upset, my dad's first question (who I work with) said are you going to be able to work Monday (typical dad joke) but after awhile everyone found it kind of funny because I was ok and rebounded so quickly. Granted, I had a concussion and had to wear sunglasses to work for the next week and really anywhere I went because of the brightness. That is probably my craziest DMB show story. Hope it can provide a good laugh

Went to Columbus '04 solo. Had sex with my waitress from Bob Evans a couple times back at my hotel.

    That's it. That's the story.

This sounds like an awesome story. We need more details. Did you go to the concert and then pick her up after a late post-show meal? Did she fuck you because you helped her with her Spanish homework? Did you seduce her with your Canadian exoticism? Did you meet her before the show and then ask her to go with you to the show and then sleep with her afterwards?

It was pretty good from what I remember - it's almost 2 decades ago now though so details are scant. I remember going there for breakfast or lunch and hitting it off with her. We made plans to hang out when she was done, pre-show. Got a couple drinks in us, went back to the hotel room and one thing led to another - as it does.

I only had 1 ticket to the show, so I left for N1, had a great time (big fan of the '04 songs). Went back for breakfast/lunch again the next day - lather, rinse & repeat

The morning after N2 I jumped on the Greyhound back to Canada and never saw nor talked to her again.
