Can't Stop

Spoot made a good point. There are certain songs that maybe arent as great as others (Jimi Thing) but they have to be played because it is a song that possibly got somebody into the band. Two Step, Crush, Ants, Crash, Billies and countless others too.

my question is, why does cant stop have to be played at most stops too? the song is brutal. it gets no pop at shows, and surely the band must notice this. literally in AC, the place was dead during it. but once Two Step began, people were going nuts.

The band likes to think it's good, but it is downright awful. They still play Cornbread too.

i dont like Cornbread, at all, but it gets a reaction. People know it. This at least give some remote reason to play it.

Cant Stop? honestly, AC was quiet during it.

Cornbread consistently gets great reactions at shows, I've never seen Can't Stop get a positive reaction from a crowd. The band has to notice that literally no one gets excited when Can't Stop starts and that the crowd is dead throughout the song. I don't think Dave is that in touch with the what the fan base wants to hear or he just doesn't give a shit and plays Can't Stop because he thinks it's a a fucking sick tune.

Encores are supposed to be special. play something on an album, or something youve made known for awhile. people all around were asking each other "whats coming?!" and when that shtity bassline kicked off, everyone just kinda stood there wondering wtf was going on. real bitch in camden in 2008 like. it was horrendous. luckily their best song came after and everybody recovered. the band MUST notice this.

    Re: Can't Stop

OP - Agreed. I don't have a use for that song.

Dave said in Seattle Weekly (December 2010): "I don't care if people don't like the music I make. I don't make it for people who don't like it and I don't play the music I play because I've done anything wrong or anything right. It's just what I do, you know?"

I don't know...maybe he's got some of that going on with Can't Stop. He just likes it and we have to suffer through it...

I don't mind Can't Stop played D&T (ie the Europe 2007 bonus disc), otherwise it can stay on the shelf.

    Re: Can't Stop

Can't Stop has to be played because of Dave refuses to internalize the fact that 95% of the best music was created prior to 2003. If he were to eliminate songs permanently that in his heart he knows are not on the same par with pre-2003 songs, he would then have to admit that the band no longer creates the quality of music that it once did. By continuing to try and "force" these songs the grow on his fans, he is actually doing more harm than good.

If you disagree with this opinion, just listen to some of the davespeak from 06-08 shows before many of these songs played. To paraphrase: "if you don't like this song, kiss my ass."

    Lol oh ya.

at farm aid in 2006 before old dirt hill "if you dont like this, maybe you can go pee"

all summer that year everybody joked about piss songs. its like he knew what we were saying. i remember cracking up when he said that. he can play what he wants to, but hes only hurting himself. legions of fans already ran for higher ground once SU came out. even some bounced after the LWS debacle.

Can't Stop is pretty much the one there-is-absolutely-no-reason-to-ever-play-this-again song in the catalog. Literally no one likes it -- the drunks don't care, the casual fans don't know it, the knowledgeable fans aren't into it, and the diehard fans actively hate it. It's a total buzzkill at shows. It was literally silent in AC, and half the venue headed for the concourse at C'ville N2.

Obviously Dave likes it, but I think the question is whether that's enough to justify it's continued play.

Incorrect. If no one liked it, it wouldn't be played. The important part is where you agree with me that dave likes it, which is what I was saying. At least Dave likes it, and he writes the set, so that's why they play it. End discussion.

at this point, i'd say he does it out of spite of this website alone just kidding, of course. while I wouldn't be thrilled with it and wouldn't cheer for it at a concert (only because I know nobody else is), I don't hate the song.

I don't think Dave liking it justifies it being played when the overwhelming majority of the crowd disagrees. Tim's idea was apparently the reason they covered Bitch, but it crashed and burned so they stopped. Dave should take a hint and treat Can't Stop the same way.
