He really wants to make America Great Again. He also really wants to work on bringing the nation together.

Remember, his "deal making" history and skill is taking advantage of contractors, having them do the work, not paying them and then settling out of court. That's what he's good at. Putting together actual deals that benefits all people is not what he is good at.

Republicans still 3-6 votes short on the health care bill. The bill has no chance of passing the Senate. What the House Rs should do is lie and say that they want to repeal it and then just never take a vote on it. Republicans don't really want to repeal it, they like what is in obamacare and don't want to get rid of preexisting conditions or the Medicaid money, but they want to be able to tell their constituents that they want to repeal it. Just say you are going to repeal it and then never bring it to a vote because "other republicans" aren't going to vote to repeal. If every republican did that it would be the perfect game because you are just blaming "other republicans" and your constituents get the benefits of Obamacare so you don't lose your seat.

Like constituents follow the news closely enough to know that they are being had. It's an identity politics world now.

Doesn't the silent majority (that was actually a minority by 3 million votes) want it too?

why not just blame the democrats? if you blame other republicans there's at least a small chance that constituents will check if their congressman supported repealing or not

You could do that. Or you can just say "other republicans" and then just say "when we take it for a whip count we just don't have the votes, folks." Then when they ask about who the people are say "I'm not allowed to name the names of the people not voting for it, it's against House rules." Then move on.

this is a classic GOP move. Shift it to the states knowing FULL WELL that the state government won't provide the services. Environmental stuff gets this treatment as well. Congress can then wipe their hands and say "well, there is a situation where pre-existing would be covered but your state decided not to do that and we can't control what states do."

I feel like this will just get MAGA folks angry with the establishment republicans. just continue to blame the democrats

regardless, I'm actually shocked the GOP isn't falling in line on this one

They're worried it would be such a disaster that they could lose the house if they rile the democratic base and depress their own enough.

I don't think that's realistic, but the right knows better than anyone how health care can spark wave elections.

Trump calling for a shutdown is not a good look. He's begging for a credit downgrade in the future that will be squarely pinned on him

I guess I can trust that the GOP are good at politics, but it just seems pretty straightforward w/r/t healthcare. their constituents don't want obamacare, they don't want obamacare, the president doesn't want obamacare

I'd like to know the numbers on the MAGA people with regards to voting history and party they voted for. Are they lifelong republicans who just embraced the identity politics? Are they consistent voters? If so they'll still vote for whomever has the R next to his or her name. There is a chance they'd get primaried but incumbency is hard to beat so if you have the nose holders vote for the incumbent in round one, the MAGA will still vote for the republican because it's an identity politics world now and they aren't voting for a democrat and their voting history says they'll still vote.

I saw a news segment about some of the coal areas, and some pretty redneck people said they voted for Obama both times. A big reason being the union rhetoric that gets thrown around, and the GOP seeming to shit on them every chance they get. Plus, despite people in this country refusing to believe white people are on welfare, entitlement programs help out poorer folks too, obviously, regardless of their opinions on social issues.

So I think those types of people are the ones that truly vote solely on one issue and one issue only; personal financial well-being. So maybe the care about social issues, maybe they don't, but doesn't matter because they don't have time to worry about that; they need to feed their families.

So you look at this past election, Trump promised them exactly what they wanted/needed to hear. HRC did not.

it's all about engagement. obviously they will vote for the R, but you would have to be worried that they wouldn't vote at all (or like you said that they'd rally around the primary opponent)

It's about turn out. The MAGA people came out and voted in numbers no one expected. They will again as long as Trump hasn't screwed them over in a tangible way they can see and feel in their own real life.
