I think I'm around the end of S4, maybe beginning of 5. We just had the poker/gunshot episode

okay yea I believe that is the very last episode before the primary plot of what ends season 4 kicks in, there's only like 2-3 more eps to go then for that season. And btw, the card playing in that episode was very much inspired by Josh Malina in real life, he's an expert poker player (actually he and Sorkin - they've been friends since college - both are), in fact Malina was hugely responsible for the whole Texas Hold'em thing breaking into reality TV over a decade ago.
It's a weird thing that goes on with season 5, cause on one hand there's too many episodes that either don't have very many compelling things going on in them, or things happen to likeable characters that you won't like. But then at the same time, there's episodes where John Wells (as the new showrunner) obviously tried to do WAY too much in, like too many big idea things. And the inconsistency of that doesn't help.
but one of the biggest season 5 things for me, and I won't mention any names to avoid spoilers for you, but they take a character that I actually liked a great deal (and I might be in a slight minority of that) and they make a MAJOR change to him. To where after not very long he becomes extremely unlikeable, to where if it were a genre show you'd almost consider him a villain. And it happens not too far into the start of s5.
