Sad day. Hope he's chillin out in some snow in doggie heaven, with no one to hassle him about it.

Feel like I've heard about several friends' pets being put down just in the last 3 days.

    Had a very grown-up weekend:

    1) Replaced both headlights in my minivan.
    2) Installed and configured my Nest thermostat
    3) Chaperoned a girl scout ice skating trip.

I'm done adulting for a while.

I changed my oil this weekend, hung some more Christmas lights, raked the rest of my leaves in the front yard, and fixed a post in my backyard fence.

Contractor also started excavation for foundation work we're having done, so my front yard looks like a god damn mud pit. Had to take care of it eventually but it's sad to see my baby (my yard) torn up. Oh well, it will give me something to do come spring time.

I'm having trouble with groundwater getting into the lower level of my house. I REALLY hope I can DIY a french drain myself to alleviate this without putting in another sump pump. Very irritating.

wow. french drain by yourself? that sounds like a very bad idea outside of super-handy folks--which, of course, do exist.

Unless you have a shallow foundation or some power equipment then a DIY curtain drain sounds almost impossible. The guy putting mine in is using a big ass backhoe and it still took him like 6 hours to excavate the entire front wall where the drain is being put in.

Luckily for us, it's a friend of my father-in-law so we are getting the entire thing done for $2200. CT Basement Systems wanted like $12k for the same exact thing.

Yeah not what I want, haha. But there's no denying the problem is groundwater; it only happens when a big storm rolls through. Has anyone here put in an outdoor sump pump?

Still going to be almost as much work as doing curtain drains...you'll have to dig down deeper than the footings, and then dig an even deeper catch basin to get the water out. Unfortunately if your issue is groundwater (same for my house), then curtain drains are really the only way to go to make sure it doesn't happen.

No doubt. The joys of homeownership!

You could also have them installed on the interior of the basement if you're not finished off down there. The reason we went with outside as opposed to inside was because our basement is newly finished and I didn't want to tear it apart.

had a very grown up couple of days

Thursday: moving company moved all of our things out
Friday: back to back settlements, moving company moved us in, spent almost $2,000 at Lowes, unpacking all night
    - bought a storm door, garage door opener, vanity, blinds, rugs, new lighting for the kitchen, small odds and ends (need to go back tomorrow for about $300 worth of paint and various other stuff)
Today: unpacking all day, friend came over and we installed the new vanity, usb outlets, nest thermostat, mounted 2 tv's, installed dimmer in basement
Tomorrow: install garage door opener, hang some blinds, install water line to fridge, more unpacking
Monday: painter/contractor coming over to paint and hang storm door

so far in less than 2 days we've had deliveries/estimates from Comcast, Best Buy, furniture place, and a fireplace installer

fuck me I'm tired. moving sucks

I actually kind of love that sort of stuff, so much fun to make a place your own and to do small things that are relatively easy.

Ever since we finished our basement off last year I’ve been itching for a new project. We have our first little one on the way in June so I’ll need to paint the third bedroom a new color and maybe hang some shelves, but that’s all easy. I’m thinking I might gut the hallway bathroom and give myself a real project for the next few weekends

Similar last few days for me with moving... We've been at our new house for a month living with minimal stuff. I was actually getting used to it. Now we have all our shit and I'm like 'do we really need all this?'.

I'll feel better when it's all unpacked set up... but right now it's just a big goddamn mess.

    Re: Grown Up Type Stuff

Okay so I own a condo on the first floor of my building and noticed yesterday a small drip coming from the ceiling of my master bathroom and also noticed a yellow sort of circle that’s clearly water damage.

My first thought is that it’s probably the neighbors bathroom upstairs since the drip is essentially right where the toilet would be - likely an issue with the plumbing or something like that. So I text the neighbor to let them know and they were really good about it. Came home and turned the water off in that bathroom and are scheduling a plumber to come out this week to take a look.

Now, I have plans to sell my condo within the next 1-2 years, so the water damage on the ceiling is something that’s going to need to be repaired. My hope is that the neighbor will bring it up after they find out about the problem. I was doing a lot of reading online and it seems that they are 100% on the hook for any damage since it came from their unit.

I just really hope they understand that it’s going to need to be repaired. They are great neighbors and I’m sure it will work out but I’m just stressed out about it knowing it needs to be fixed but not being able to do anything until they get the plumber out and find out what the damage looks like.

If I end up having to bring it up myself I was thinking of saying something along the lines of “so what are you thinking about moving forward in terms of the water damage to my ceiling” and see what they say once the issue is fixed.

I just don’t want to have to take this on myself through my insurance.

^ it sounds like you guys have a good relationship, so I would just be honest. "Hey man I'm glad you were able to get the plumbing issue fixed. I just want to let you know, I have some water damage on my ceiling because of it that's going to have to be fixed, can we talk about some options?"

and the options are basically he's going to pay to fix it, or go through his insurance (which he likely won't because the deductible will be higher than the damage)

now listen, if it's just a small yellowish spot, and it's dry now and the problem is fixed, I would probably just paint over it and move on. The only thing that's difficult is that it's basically impossible to paint white on white without it being obvious. If it was dripping significantly there is going to be some drywall damage, but that's easily patched

To me, this doesn't sound like a huge deal. Just bring it up.

    yeah that sounds good

I also sent them a picture of it right away so they could see what it looks like. I'll attach it here for you guys to see too - the problem is my ceiling is made of absestos so I'm not sure if that complicates painting it or not. it's also right along my ceiling fan which makes the angle kind of tough.

another thing I'll say is that the dripping stopped shortly after they turned the water off and the ceiling doesn't appear to be quite as wet. so now it's just a matter of figuring out how much damage there might be.

Sounds like a toilet leak around the wax ring. Can go undetected pretty easily. Upstairs insurance should pay to repair your ceiling. You don’t really know how far or wide the damage is until it gets opened up. Probably replace a little insulation, patch drywall and texture/paint and it will be over.
