Not saying this to defend the article, but I follow soccer, not so much South American leagues/teams, but this team has been a popular underdog story so it's reached beyond local news. The reason you'll see a ton of articles focusing a lot on the game is because it was such a huge deal. This small town in Brazil who hasn't been in the top league for decades, finally got promoted two years ago I think, finished in 9th or so this year, which is good, and was a favorite to win this current tournament. The whole country was behind them it seemed.
It's hard to come up with a good analogy since we don't do leagues the same way they do, but maybe something like the last seeded team in the NCAA tournament won all their games, was going to the championship and their plane crashed. It's super shitty, especially for small Brazilian towns that probably don't have that much money and people eat, sleep, breathe soccer and the pride that comes with it.
