I don't like the phrasing and lyric structure mixed with the wanna be southern bayou cadence dave brings to the same. Same reason i don't like Louisiana Bayou and Alligator Pie. And to me from a musical standpoint the song does nothing for me. It's just one of those post Big 3 albums dmb songs that makes me wanna hit the skip button at a live show.

Simple chord progressions in typical situation or Blue Water can engage my interest for 45 minutes of jamming. Cornbread and Bayou make me bored after 30 seconds.

I think Seek Up is overrated. Not a bad song by any means - I think it's one of Dave's better songs lyrically. I just don't get the hype, especially after ten+ minutes live - just not the type of song I want to be dragged on.

I feel the same way about live LITHOG. Great song, but it just starts to drag during long jams.

Here I go: my 5 unpopular thoughts

    1) I think that DMB are like good wine: the older they get, the better they get. That’s why I am loving the 4.0 Era. And I don’t complain for any new 2019 release. I think that, starting from very solid base, they even increased in creativity of the jams, quality of the solos and overall performance (the have more songs to chose from).

    2) I think that there should be more LT and broadcasting/videos of international shows. I love the vibes of the few South American shows available (see for example LT19).

    3) I do miss a violin in some songs (but not necessarily Boyd’s violin), but I was missing more the keyboards. Buddy Strong brings more to the overall music than the long, energetic, but somehow static, jams from Boyd. Well, maybe this one though is not so unpopular.

    4) I am not a huge fan of fall ‘98 live shows. Great setlist, I would say perfect setlist, but less songs to chose from. Most of the concerts were looking the same. Not a big variation also on the versions of a certain songs. Some jams were awesome, sure, but I think we have more now (see point no.1).

    5) I would love to see a special guest on every show. For example, having regularly on stage a percussionist like Pedrito Martinez (but not on every song, say on Ants and some more) would be so much fun. I imagine spectacular duets with Carter.

    ——

Since no.1 and no.4 are close relatives, I’ll add one more:

    6) The most underrated song of DMB is, in my opinion, ‘So Right’. They should make more out of it.

I feel this list 100%. I think the only thing I would hope for in regards to #5 is that they have a guest violinist that can come out for a few songs a night. I would love to see the 4.0 lineup with a guest violinist as well.

I think my unpopular opinion is that the Warehouse message boards suck. So many political rants on there and name calling. It's sort of frustrating to see that on a band's forum that pushes for love over everything.

This (being my post right here) isn't an unpopular DMB opinion, just addressing the second paragraph above...

They do suck. I went there to see if there was any discussion of the new songs and nothing. It's about tickets and shitting on each other...although there are good people on there too.

Very little discussion of band or their music. It's really rather strange.

Agree. I want to discuss this band, and in pre-covid times try my luck on trading tickets. These days it's people explaining their political beliefs and getting sucked into arguments. I much prefer it over here. Just wish there was more traffic here in this off season.

Let’s say that among all the DMB songs is one that I like less.

I find the melody pretty basic.

But I see that most of the people like it, and this is strange to me.

The more time we get away from Boyd being part of the band and the more content with Buddy that is released, and the more I listen back to old recordings, I am actively beginning to hate the violin sound. The only thing keeping the current form of the band from getting the "best they've ever sounded" title from me is that they're missing Roi.

This is not so unpopular, indeed.
Many others have come to the same conclusion: without Boyd (and with Buddy) the band has gained in dynamics, sound, and play together more than before.
Check what KevinTH said in another thread, from a musician point of view:

The more this group plays as a band and less as individuals in a band the better. That’s what made DMB what it was. 5 guys that played together dynamically and as a unit. It feels like since Roi died the band became less of a unit and simply used the songs as an avenue to display everyone’s individual talent.

It’s taken me a while to look past the absence of the violin, but if these guys can start playing dynamically again, then I don’t know that it matters what instruments are in this band.

I dig the cheesy guitar solo keyboard sound Butch used on those 2001 versions of Watchtower. Folsom’s Field version still gives me chills when Roi comes in for his solo.

I really want to hear Hollywood Bowl for that string section. Never found it anywhere.

I’m a very long time fan and am really enjoying finding my love for the band again. These ‘19 shows are on repeat lately. Been listening to Bethel and Alpine a lot. I didn’t think I could dig this band again, especially without Boyd, but when they keep it in control they sound so good. Cap that off with Quarentine-Dave and Dave and Carter...I think I’m excited for whatever this album is going to be. If this band gets the chance to come back and vamps up the set lists with more songs like Sweet Up and Down, and stays locked in and plays dynamically then I could see getting excited to hit some shows again.

I’m getting more into the Dead the last year or two and recently watched The Long Strange Trip on Amazon (incredible doc). It made me think how this next era of DMB could be like when the Dead hit that stretch in the 80s where things had changed, but they really won their fans back in a big way with really great shows and playing.

Spoon is the only Big 3 song where the live version will never even come close to how good the studio version is

I disagree but I feel like your opinion isn't all that uncommon, isn't Spoon considered to be one of the best studio tracks this band has ever done?
