Let's stop with the name-calling guys. You can disagree with grace or take a timeout. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-e...70N4WK20110124

Recurring themes (rather than rehashed or repetitive ideas) are something that I really appreciate about prolific songwriters and authors and give me a satisfying sense of a connected universe/body of work.

Andrew Bird, for random example, does this very deliberately and revisits phrases and imagery all the time from record to record. It's an evolution of a thought, re-contextualizing it to now mean something slightly different. To me, they're easter eggs referencing their own back catalog and it's really cool when I can pick up on it in real-time.

The connection between "Finger Back" and "Harmony Hall" by Vampire Weekend comes to mind, as well ("I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die"). Not to mention the greats (to me) like Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, who frequently utilize the same words, phrases, and imagery in slightly different ways.

The point is, to outright dismiss recurring themes or phrases as lazy or perfunctory feels unfair to the writer. Obviously we don't know Dave's intent, for sure, but let's give him a little more credit for his presumed genius rather than lambasting him for phoning it in.

Until he throws in another goddam "baby" or "belly jelly" into the mix, and then I'm out for good
I think it's something that makes Dave Dave. Monkey references. Grace. "come tomorrow."

Well, fine. I guess that didn't require an essay to say

But I think my point is that it's not just Dave who does this; it's a songwriting thing, not a Dave thing.

Here's a link to my own mastered version of Windows. I removed mouth pops, guitar creaks, reduced background noise, and fixed that blip in the livestream towards the end of the song since that was pretty distracting for me. EQ'd it to make it feel a bit brighter, used a dynamic EQ to tame those lower resonant guitar notes, de-essed Dave's vocals to reduce sibilance, and then used a little bit of compression to add some consistency in loudness. I also added in reverb to emphasize the sense of loneliness the song is addressing (also reverb just sounds so damn good). Kind of makes it feel like Dave is actually singing from a window to an empty world. I left the original version up for comparison. I made sure to match the loudness of the mastered version since often times anything that's louder sounds better to our ears. Really proud of how this turned out!

Also here's the link to the artist's Etsy page for the album cover I used. You can buy and download a hires version to print out your own poster!

Listened again today, cried through most of it. Maybe the best song he has wrote in years.

Glad to see he played it last night so it’s sticking around. Definitely want to hear this one full band. I think this is the song he’s been aiming for with songs like Mercy.

Thank you for this, it sounds amazing!

Really enjoyed hearing this again last night. Almost lost his way a few times, but I think that actually added to the fragility of the song and I liked the new lyrics towards the end. Perfect solo acoustic song.

Here's the audio rip of last night's Farm Aid show: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/9bvi...pril_11th_2020

Available as individual files, and full show ZIP.

In case you haven't heard and/or listened, Fonz tweeted a vid of him playing/creating a bassline for Windows. I think this is the type of tune that could be cool with Dave, Fonz, and Carter alone, but it would also be cool to hear a full band version. It obviously sounds great on its own, but I love the magic of the band...

Still really like this song, but I think the debut was better than the farm aid version. He made some vocal/melody choices that I didn't like. But overall this song is awesome.

Changed up how he played it on guitar a bit too in the 2nd version I think. I'm leaning toward that one, but yeah, glad to have this song for sure.

@Carpenter41 Great job! This is really great work. Would you consider doing something similar to the new John Prine cover?

Sure thing! This recording has less issues than Windows so it shouldn't be difficult.

I like “Shadows on the Wall” for the title. “Shadows” for short. More intriguing of a title than “Windows” IMO.

I could see the name of the song changing depending on the producer:

    Windows - Lillywhite
Shadows on the Wall - Cavallo
Windows (Shadows on the Wall) - Batson

LOL, oh wow that perfecutly sums it up.

I do not like parenthesis in titles. I still cringe that BTCS has Stay (Wasting Time).

My goodness. This is perfect. I'd like to see this exercise applied to all unreleased tunes but also I think the collective cringe might kill me

Nice little tune, fun to play on guitar. It’s weird seeing Dave use a capo.

I think about this every time I hear this song. I think the last time he played with a capo was the 2004 Good Good Times. Can anyone think of a more recent example?

I remember he played Sister using one at the show where his voice was shot. I think it was streamed on AOL, it’s the same show when he gets mad during the two step intro and his voice is gone.
