What do you mean? Is it always the best/recommended to look for first pressings only?

YESSSSS!!!! I'll be getting all those eventually. Houses of the Holy has "Over the Hills...", "No Quarter" and "Song Remains the Same" which are 3 of my all time favorite Zep Songs. I think I'll be getting II & III next...but gotta pace myself so I don't break the bank.

Not always. Definitely not a hard and fast rule. But you have to look out for source information, who mastered it (assuming it got a vinyl-specific master and didn't just use the CD mastering), where it was pressed, etc.

Sometimes a first press is better than later reissues or remasters sometimes it's the opposite.

An example of the latter would be if/when BTCS gets a 20th anniversary release. It would hopefully be done all analog like Crash was, cut by Bellman, and sound fantastic. It would blow the 1998 original out of the water.

Gotcha...so it's mostly is just ensuring you're getting a good sounding version, which is fair.

With that in mind, how can I tell which version is recommended/preferred? Without a side-by-side comparison, I really wouldn't be able to tell the difference especially if it was an album/record I have never heard before the first time I'm playing it on vinyl...

Comparatively, in the past I have used Spotify as a base line comparing Live at Luther College (digital vs. RSD release) and it was rather successful. I discovered the LP-60 I had gotten for Christmas was actually running about 2% faster than it should have been. Tempo was quicker by about a half-step and the pitch was slightly up. Had I not known LLC intimately, I would have never noticed.

The good news is that once I found that out and was unable to find a fix, I returned it and got an LP-120USB instead. I knew it was a sign I needed to plunk down the extra money to get the upgrade.

Best bet is to do some online research, ask around here, or other hifi/vinyl discussion boards and forums. An educated consumer is usually a happy consumer.

Between the good handful of us that are pretty active in this thread, you'll generally get some good info on a specific album if you have questions regarding what the best options are.

This was in the Led Zeppelin thread and saw the leaked amazon pages yesterday, but here is the official announcement of Zeppelin's How The West Was Won finally coming to vinyl. I'm probably going to go with the super deluxe box since this is my favorite official Zeppelin release.

    Blu-ray audio for me.

Holding back the vinyl budget in hopes of something really nice for BTCS...and when that doesn't happen it'll be show money

I wish I could stick to a vinyl budget. I'm definitely hoping for a 45rpm release of BTCS. I'd really love a single sided BTCS 45rpm box set, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen.

Oh god I’m all in on that...

What’s the advantage of having a 5.1 mix of a live show, though? Studio work I understand, but live is just want the closest experience to being there, which is essentially just stereo

This one had the lacquer cut by Kevin Gray, pressed at Pallas, and can be had relatively cheap:

Depends on the artist, in some cases the artist allows the 5.1 mixer to mix it like a studio album, Elliot Scheiner is one of the most well known surround mixers and he did the NIN Beside You In Time 5.1 mix (Blu-ray / HD DVD / DVD; it is amazing! Although the show was in stereo, the 5.1 mix just makes the entire thing way more nails-y, very cool mix.

Other uses of surround are to more accurately recreate the ambience of the venue, this occurs a lot with classical live recordings and in some cases they record with multiple mics and do an Atmos mix, more accurate acoustical representation when you hear something ringing off the roof 60ft above your 11ft tall room, haha.

Stereo can sound more like a straight board feed, but that's more like what it would be at a concert with headphones on listening to said feed, I think surround mixes can more accurately represent what it sounds like actually being there. You can get better front soundstage separation as well when you can mix the vocals directly into the centre, and require less of a sweet spot vs stereo when you have multiple performers whose location on stage you want to recreate (like the DMB LT44 5.1 mix).

Despite some recent timeliness issues from SSD, they have it listed at $75, but also have their 20% discount going on right now.

    https://www.soundstagedirect.com/dav...-records.shtml

If you input code "LP20" at check out, the price drops to $60 and still qualifies for free shipping. Just slightly cheaper than Amazon's $66 with Prime

If you input code "LP20" at check out, the price drops to $60 and still qualifies for free shipping. Just slightly cheaper than Amazon's $66 with Prime

If I still needed this I'd definitely pay the $6 to get it in 2 days instead of waiting a month from SSD.

I finally got my order from them last Friday BTW. Great packaging as always. Just wish they could do it quicker!

I haven't seen anything other than what's in the press release on Zeppelin's site. If the studio album remasters are any indication, this should be damn good. Although, I'll definitely be going with the Blu-Ray audio at $19 over the vinyl at $105.

I can only wager a guess, but because they noted Jimmy Page's involvement, I'd assume the mastering quality would be on par with the 2014 remastered releases of the studio albums. Those were pressed at Pallas, so perhaps they'll follow suit for this?

Check that, use LP25 instead for 25% off!

Yeah, though with an additional 5% off now, I'd consider it. I still haven't picked up a black copy, and am in no rush since I have an RSD copy. At $56, a full $10 less, it might be worth it. Not sure it'll end up ever being much cheaper than that.

Looks like MoFi has a few more Dire Straits entries for 2018:

How long do y'all think it will take before the price drops on that zepp? It's not something I absolutely need to pre order. I almost wish I would have waited on the BBC vinyl. I've seen it for as low as $50-60.
Is the blue ray 5.1 different from the 5.1 DVD in the deluxe edition?
