hate to say it, but that ship has already sailed for a lot, if not most, people.

If they put out an album with ViTR, BBB, Bismarck, Sam Cop, Here on Out, Bob Law, DoTHS, Shotgun, Idea of you, Sugar Will, Break Free, and 1-3 new songs we haven't yet heard... I'd say that is a pretty damn good album. Now, that list is wishful thinking, for sure, and I know people here would complain about it, but it would be beyond solid.

Shotgun, SW, Break free, Idea of You etc will not be on an album. I would bet my house on it.

pretty sure the "wishful thinking" is not considered a reliable source.

I wish.... if he had enough material for a solo album, then it is a realistic timeline.

    Would be awesome

    Re: New Album Chances Now?

Honestly, what's the point in DMB releasing a studio album anymore in this day and age? That's not where their art has ever been, really. They clearly aren't driven to do work in the studio like they flirted with in the BTCS/LWS era, and by all accounts they weren't really all that driven then either. I'll be surprised if we ever get a studio album again; maybe one more, but I'm not counting on it.

When you get right down to it, it doesn't even matter. If they can continue debuting songs in a live environment, so be it; they'll be doing it the way they really want to and are good at, plus we'll still get new DMB tunes, for better or for worse.

    Re: New Album Chances Now?

It's sort of a fundamental of the music industry. The studio recordings entice people to see the live show. True the band came up in a different path, but what crossed them over from collegiate underground love to mainstream success was the studio album. In this day and age, there is not love for going to see a mystery b/c you can google it. In '94 we went to go see DMB just because we had heard about their live show and wanted to see what they were all about. Now you can just get to YouTube and see it. And if people are seeing Be Yourself as their first hit, they might as well Leave It To Beiber.

This is such a weak argument and I don't know why people keep saying it. Do you listen to any songs from any bands that aren't live? Those are studio recorded songs and people like them. People support the bands at their shows, buy their merch., want studio songs. That is the point.

Yeah, don't get people who don't listen to studio DMB or don't want more studio music from them of new material. Other than Stand Up, I love their studio albums.

I like the 2016 songs too.

Yeah, the people who say they don't want new music are trying to come across as cool. "I don't need that." Most likely wearing a white t-shirt with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve. "I got a F on my test, who cares man.. who cares." Gotta wonder why they linger in the new album thread if they don't care.

I'm not saying it to sound cool. Of course I want a new album and for it to be good; of course there's a point for new albums from my perspective.

My point is that I don't see why the band would really care about it anymore. From their perspective, they can just debut songs live year after year and avoid the headache of working in the studio. Do I honestly believe this will be the case for the rest of the band's existence? No, but I think 6 year waits between albums is essentially the same thing.

Studio work should be something the band's driven to do for the sake of their art. I think it's safe to say that, at this point, it's not much of a priority.

That is exactly what the studio should be. You are right that, at this point, it's not a priority, but I don't know that it ever really was. Maybe when Dave was just starting out, writing all of the great songs from the earliest part of their career, art was a larger part of the equation. There was a VH1 doc from the BTCS sessions where Dave said he would write, and write, and write until his lyrics "didn't suck anymore," and maybe that was him being driven to create great art, but that mindset is clearly dead, and it was killed by Glen Ballard.
