I came here to suggest Anton Patzner (of Judgment Day -- Peacocks & Pink Monsters; warn: it's "string metal" not jam-band). He's got the technical aptitude and ability (I thought I read he was classically trained like Boyd, but, I guess that's his brother on Cello). IMO, only thing he lacks is stage presence. Boyd was pretty charismatic (big shoes to fill).

... On the other hand, after reading through the thread ... already better thoughts and suggestions if DMB replaces Boyd (and hopefully it's temporary).

I only caught ants tonight, but after hearing that trainwreck I’m 100% in the find a replacement violin boat. I don’t see how any other instrument would sound right.

I want someone to fill in on violin. In my opinion, the violin is a cornerstone of their sound. With the permanent addition of Tim in 2008, they made the decision to move towards a decidedly more “rock” sound and Boyd was certainly lost in the mix, turned down , or perhaps drowned out. Regardless, I want a violin in this band. When Roi was injured and expected to return , they didn’t abandon his position in the interim. They brought Jeff into the fold temporarily. Sadly, Roi didn’t return, but the instrument(s) he played stayed. Jeff adapted things and put his own unique mark on that role and made it his own. Some like it more than others, but the instruments Roi played remained. The same should be the case here.

Since we're talking about replacement violinists, why not one or both of the guys from Black Violin, Kevin Sylvester (Kev Marcus) and Wilner Baptiste (Wil B)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Tania Elizabeth... but she'd be great. Formerly of the Duhks and now on tour with The Avett Brothers. She's got a real eclectic background, and can play the shit out of the violin!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhEn2nnRcNo

Maybe not the best video to showcase her abilities, but I like how she's integrated into the song. No doubt she could hold her own up there with DMB.

I'd hate to see her leave the Avett Brothers though. But certainly, she could do it, and they can pay her a lot more, I'm sure. Not saying she'd leave for that.... who knows.

My first choice is obviously Jimmy. While I think it's an unlikely long shot, as some have pointed out, he could do 30ish shows without any conflict and then you could have someone else fill in the rest.

As that's unlikely, I just hope they get someone to fill in. A few of the songs sounded decent with other fills but most did not.

I laughed when someone suggested the guy from Yellowcard on Periscope last night, but after watching a couple of their live performances, I agree!

I went to A Concert For Charlottesville, and it was so obvious that Boyd wanted to be ANYWHERE else. I’d rather they find a replacement who wants to be there, as opposed to Boyd standing there looking miserable, just going through the motions. I also don’t think he’ll be back.

This is where I'm at, but they're definitely in a position to be selective. They don't want to trade one problem for another. Before last night I was posting that Boyd taking a break wasn't a big deal, but I was waaaaay wrong. They need to fix this before the tour starts or it's going to be the beginning of the end. Filling in Boyd's parts with guitars just isn't working. If they continue this way, they're going to have to rename the band to "Dave and the Wall of Guitars."

I think a cool way to do this is to select their pick and have them learn the key Boyd songs stone cold. Maybe 5-8 songs. Have the new violinist come on tour with them and 'guest' on the Boyd songs picked for that night, say 3-4 songs. As they go through the tour and rehearse, let the new violinist ease into the catalog and grow their role in the sets over time. With a 25 year fan base, easing a new violinist in is the way to go. That's if they want to keep the 'machine' going for a few more years. You have to wonder what Dave and Carter are thinking this morning. Maybe this is the straw that breaks the camel's back and they seriously start contemplating the role of touring in their careers.

Either way, I think this tour will be seminal. Things could turn out really good or really bad. The opportunity to improve their sound is incredible...please don't choke.

I had to investigate this but hell, why not? I watched some clips. He sounds pretty solid and has a good stage presence. Plus, they're done as a band so he's likely free.

Stage presence is just as import to a live show as playing ability imo
Those videos linked are boring as hell, jimmy even more so if you watch his cover band stuff

Edit Tania or Ann Marie is the best of linked vids I have seen as far as stage presence goes

Here's another one of Tania you might like... dial this bad boy up to the 3:55 or so mark. Short solo but you'll see she'd fit in pretty darn well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1PBGHui5fY

Doesn't mean he'd bring that. Have you ever been to a TR3 show? Tim is crazy in that setting. Dials it back significantly when he's with DMB. I'd imagine anyone else they get would do the same. It's not them at the forefront at that point.
