Different kind of answer: I’m partial to the 2011 caravan approach. I wouldn’t want a music festival approach again but I did enjoy the 3 days of DMB + D&T.

From what I remember over various interviews the process of finishing DDTW in the studio was really a challenge, the band more or less gave up on it and drank that night all upset that it wasn't going to happen. Then Lillywhite worked on it all night and had the band come in the next day and they had a track. I'd love to be able to listen to whatever they had when they gave up on it and see the changes that Lillywhite made, it's a great track and hard to imagine it was so hopeless they gave up on it a day before the form we know it as.

I am about halfway through the new Live Trax 60 that I received in the mail today. I listened to Water into Wine a few times. It is very country like and makes me want to have a hoedown! Dave says, "Oh, Texas gold" in a funny voice. Roi is so smooth

I’ve always loved Spaceman. Classic Dave + Fonz + Carter interplay. Tim playing cool parts that add texture without just mimicking Dave’s parts (love his riff in the pre-chorus). I like the lyrics too, it’s a vibe that allows saying “I love you baby” a million different ways to not be annoying. Really dig “I’m not all bad but I’m a faithful sinner, I might get lost but I’ll be home for dinner” and “I’d be a dog for a tail [tale] to chase.” Awesome horn parts (sadly missing from the studio cut) and a Rashawn solo that actually, usually, shows restraint. Studio cut is kinda whack but I really dig the banjo. One of, if not the, most underrated tracks post-2000.

Edit: just listened to studio again. Forgot how much I actually like it. The vocal overlays are super cool. Just needs horns!

Spacemans awesome. Carter and Stefan own it, and Rashawn sounds great on it.

I don't mind them autotuning Dave, sometimes it really ruins the moment for me when Dave goes really flat

So this past weekend I listened to both Stand Up and Come Tomorrow, and outside of a couple of songs, they are kind of unlistenable.

AFTW came next, and while I do like many of the songs, it just feels flat; lifeless.

Everyday was on the docket for today, and it just straight up fucking jams. Live, the songs kill, and as strange as it is to say now (compared to the time of its release), it sounds more like “classic” DMB than anything since Busted Stuff.

Steve Hyden had a scathing review of AFTW but he absolutely nails it. Hyden is by no means a DMB fan and has openly stated that but he is a music critic and he does know good music.

"As much as I hated my brief experience seeing Matthews live, at least he played with conviction. Away From the World feels like an afterthought, which makes the half-assed stabs at “meaning” all the more ineffectual."

    Nail, meet hammer. Spot on.

Agree with Stand Up. It is atrocious. Bad all around. Come Tomorrow is way better in my opinion, but knowing that it's a last minute ditch effort to get it out leaves a bad taste in my mouth about it.

I would agree with everything you've said here, but Big Whisky is still a really good moment in the band's studio history. I love that album.

I'll take CT and AFtW over ED every-damned-day, twice on Sundays. While SU is still my least favorite album based on the music and sound itself, ED is the least DMB sounding album from the catalog PLUS Some Devil. As I've said before, while I don't care for the results I appreciate that SU had the band working together to create music instead of Dave writing with the "rock" hitmaker de jour and using the band like 2nd tier studio musicians (top tier players contribute/create parts and sometimes help w/ arrangements).

I can agree that ED stands out, but not in way that I enjoy at all.

speaking of everyday, i listened to the only thing earlier today for the first time in a while and i had a thought that it felt like an everyday (album) song. it was like DIDO meets i did it, but in a good way.

As a working musician myself this comes off very narrow minded. To call a studio musician that shows up and plays charts “2nd tier studio musicians” is really a slap to how talented those musicians are. Some of those Everyday interviews back in the day may have been fluff, but I do in fact believe Carter when he said he felt like a professional throughout that process. Studio musicians that can come in and play whatever it is you ask of them speaks to how talented they actually are. There are SO many musicians we have never heard of that have contributed their sound to some of the biggest names in the business.

None of us had a clue as to who Buddy Strong was until he got pulled into DMB, but the guy had played with top artists like Ariana Grande. There are so many different kinds of working musicians out there you’ve never heard of that are top tier musicians but they can read charts fluently and don’t always play to 20,000 people every night. Where do you think the thousands and thousands of Berklee trained musicians go when they graduate?

Absolutely. I know most won't agree and there may be musical and technical differences that would draw fans to the other three discussed, but just from an "enjoyable" perspective I think everyday blows them out.

I feel like a lot of folks “hate” ED because of the “controversy” around LWS/ED/BS. Had LWS been released, followed by ED, I think people would have felt different. Many would have still been like “WTF” but it would have been different.

Musically and especially lyrically, it is far superior to anything since (again, with the exception of BS).

I listened to all the albums before I joined any forums or knew what the Lillywhite Sessions were, and Everyday was always near the bottom of my list. I never liked how produced it sounded, almost as if it was created specifically for radio.

I really like half of tracks from the Everyday album, the other half range from meh to bad. When you don’t like 6 out of 12 tracks, it’s hard to rank an album any higher than a C
