I was listening to London Calling tonight and thinking they really don't make punk music like that classic 70's British Punk sound. There's nothing else like it.

Not into OG punk music. Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, ect. ect. were all before my time and i never got into them.

However, Pop Punk hit the airwaves hard right when i was in middle school. A few bands in my youth really make me look back on the "punk" genre with fond memories.

Hell yeah, man. Loved this stuff growing up. Add Brand New to that list and you've got basically my entire iTunes top-played list from when I was 14-16 years old.

This stuff is still awesome to pregame to with a couple friends. Such nostalgia...."and mom and dad possess the key, instant slaverryyy"

Some solid 90's punk groups that weren't pop-ish I really liked:

Social Distortion
Soul Asylum (some said they were alt-rock, but I consider them punk)
Goldfinger
Pennywise
Bad Religion (they were active pre-90's, but were big in the 90's)
NOFX
Rancid

The pop-punk stuff is what made the genre profitable, and I saw most of the big ones of the early '00s (MxPx, Blink, Rancid, Dropkicks, Bad Religion), thanks to the Warped Tour (and I knew Bad Religion's singer Greg Graffin when he and I were students at Cornell at the same time). Truth be told, I don't like music that sounds terrible on purpose, which is why the Sex Pistols never did anything for me. The pop-punk bands knew how to make loud music, but make it with a melodic hook that you could sink your ear into. I don't listen to much of it anymore, although Green Day's American Idiot shows what the genre can do at its very best. All I can say is, I was there when it was big (the second time around, anyways), and I wasn't bored, but it's nothing I'd write home about either. The Clash, I've never really listened to beyond the singles. Probably worth at least a bit of investigative listening. The Ramones were the Beach Boys in leather jackets. Nothing I was terribly impressed by.

The genre as a whole doesn't really float my boat these days, but when I was big into the Warped scene, it was fun. Blink put on a hell of an entertaining show, as did the Dropkicks (of course, I'm a sucker for anyone with an Irish slant to their music). Rancid (I thought, anyways) kind of sucked. The early bands, they haven't played much of a role in my musical taste, but again, I'm open to a re-listen.

I know these probably won't be greeted nearly as well as my other list, but this is a pretty good glimpse at a decent chunk of the 'new' rock music on my itunes.

With the exception of Green Day, the only thing most of those wannabe mid-90s "punk" bands were good for was opening the door for people to get into the good shit.

As far as classic punk, I love the Ramones. I was fortunate enough to see them once prior to Joey's passing. They played about 20 songs in a 45 minute set and it was awesome.

That said, my favorite punk band of all time is still Dead Kennedys. I also listen to Bad Religion regularly (was thrilled to see them again opening for PJ at the Spectrum in 2009) and some hardcore bands, namely Ignite and Sick of it All. Bad Religion's All Ages is one of the best career retrospectives of any band ever.

I do dig the Celtic Punk scene - Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy's, and the fathers of Celtic Punk - The Pogues.

And Gypsy Punk owns, Gogol Bordello still kicks it the way punk bands in the 70's kicked it - and they've stuck with it.

Dropkicks and Flogging are fun, but their stuff wears thin on me after 3 or 4 songs.

I usually break them out in march around Paddy's day, but other than that, they are rare to find on in the car for me.

Do or Die is a fantastic album. Haven't been as into Dropkick as much since their first singer left (saw them open for the Bosstones in Philly before they were big at all and they were great) but I still enjoy their music well enough.

On the Warped scene, besides some of the ska bands (and only the ones, like Hepcat or The Slackers, that emulated the Jamaican sound, at that), the hardcore bands were the ones I gravitated towards, as well. I could never hang with the straight-edge aspect of the scene (I like my whiskey and smokes too much for that), but the bands brought the intensity of early punk and blended it with some of the heavy, extreme metal bands I liked, which is why I dug Hatebreed so much (and, despite going through more drummers than Spinal Tap, they're still at it). Ditto Candiria, who are one of the most inventive bands I've ever heard--who the hell would think it's a good idea to blend hardcore, metal, jazz, and hip-hop? I guess you could call it "Nu Metal", except it was good.

Went to warped '12 to check out a few bands, got to see New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Mayday Parade etc..Really dug those bands in high school

Going to warped tour in July this year down in Nashville. Extremely excited.

i get to see Yellowcard, We The Kings, Mayday Parade, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, Cute is What We Aim For, Four Year Strong, Less Than Jake, & The Story So Far.

Extremely excited since i have only seen Yellowcard. There are tons of other bands, and it is my first Warped Tour. Little late to the party considering i will be 23 when i attend. But, better late than never.

is a day to remember a punk band now? i remember my friends liked them and they seemed to me a mix of metalcore and well now that i think about it pop punk.
