Me too man. 10 or 11 year old me thought he was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. When we did the rushed signatures and handshakes after the show I didn’t know what to say other than, “you are so cool” and he just laughed, threw his arm around me and noded to my uncle as we got shuffled along. Great show. That would have been around 81 or 82.

Just got wifi on the plane and saw this. Jesus what a horrible day. I'm not the biggest fan of his music, but man, what a loss.

This one hurts. I'm friends with quite a few people who have worked with him and from the stories I've heard he couldn't have been a nicer guy. Polite, gentlemanly... the works. He was a real icon. His music made me smile so many fucking times. One of my favorite things to do on a long drive on a sunny day is to throw on some Petty. So many of his songs became hits. His music was a huge part of the soundtrack to my life.

Tom Petty fought The Man and won. Fought the music industry. Didn't take no shit. He was my dad's hero.

I had a student tell me in class and I was reeling. Didn’t know how to react. So we played some Tom Petty. Even though I’m 25 years older than them, some of them got my sadness as we played the music. No musician death/sickness has hit me as hard as this since Leroi.

Listened to Petty all afternoon at work as it poured rain outside. I lost it sitting in traffic on the way home listening to the This Is: Tom Petty Spotify playlist.

Called my mom and we had a nice conversation about appreciating those that bring you joy in life and never forgetting them and seeing them every chance you get. Oddly enough, my parents who are big Petty fans and the reason I have such a connection to his music, had never gotten to see him live before.

Seeing Joe Walsh open up for Tom and the Heartbreakers this summer was an absolute treat. Joe played Take It To The Limit and dedicated it to Glenn Frey - Eagles are another act they loved and never saw.

It's going to be really hard getting over this one.

Awful, awful news. Never got to see him live nor did I ever dive deep into their catalog, but I always loved the hits. Solid, American rock that was never cheesy and easy to relate you.

Summer of 2005 my uncle had a mixed CD with this on it I was blown away. Had never heard You Got Lucky but it stuck with me as my favorite Tom Petty tune.

Also have a baseball connection with the band. Feel like American Girl was played at every Braves game I ever went to and Baseball Tonight's theme one year was Runnin' Down A Dream. Those alwats stuck out and made me smile everytime I heard them.

    RIP a true American icon

This is the first TP song I ever heard. It was a video very early in the MTV days. Such a great musician and songwriter. So many great songs. Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTAhZKP5wCY

I hope people who really only know the hits are inspired to look deeper, because goddamn does he have one of the deepest and most consistent catalogs in rock history.

Just listened to 'Echo' front to back and welled up with tears several times. I just can't even.

One of my favourite albums and definitely best break up record. He was one of my all time favourites. When I’m in a bad mood I always listen to ‘I won’t back down’.

I will never forget driving to the small gender reveal party we had for my firstborn, and Here Comes My Girl came on my radio. That song will always be connected to me and my daughter.
