Re: The Decemberists

Saw them for the first time last night, awesome show. Heavy on the new album, but they played well. Severed live was a beast. Fun show.

    Re: The Decemberists

I saw them on Friday. It was probably my 5th time seeing them I think. They really are a quirky band. I like their unique style of music, but Colin Meloy just kind of rubs me the wrong way sometimes. His personality is very unusual. With a lot of bands, you can tell on stage that they are just having fun and that they are really grateful for the opportunity to play music. However, with Colin, he can come off sometimes like he doesn't really care that much. Like if he wasn't playing music on stage, he would just find something else to interest him. He does a lot of things on stage, like with his banter sometimes, that is really egocentric. He makes jokes where he tries to come off as sarcastic, but it comes off more as being kind of arrogant. It's just kind of odd sometimes. It also didn't help at the show that the guy behind me spilled his beer on me twice during the show. It wasn't a ton, but it definitely left parts of my coat and back of my shirt moist and I smelled like beer the rest of the night. My coat still slightly smells like beer.

The best show I saw them do was probably their Hazards of Love tour when they played the whole album straight through. When they focus on the music, they perform really well. The worst show I saw from them was probably 3 times ago when Colin was clearly drunk for the show. It was pretty bad.

I liked the inflatable whale for this tour. Not quite as good as the other tour where they had a giant cutout whale actually eat all of them on stage, but still pretty good to see the inflatable one flying around the audience. However, kind of uninspired to do the exact same encore closer as previous tours.

The old whale was thrown out into the crowd at their festival last year. The old
Paper machae one from 2005-2007–I honestly don’t remember how it met it’s demise. Those were the only whales I think.

Agreed and it’s not just you who says that about Mariners. It’s classic decemberists but it tends to be overplayed on album tours

Saw them last night. It was a really good show. Probably just a normal album tour show for the band, but the music and Colin's singing was so tight and perfect. They played Grace Cathedral Hill which is one of my favorite songs ever. He called us sickos after The Rake's Song. At one point, as we're absolutely trashing during the accordion solo in Rox in the Box, my wife and I lock eyes, in equal agreement, that this is, in fact, the absolute whitest thing ever.... then Jenny picked up the goddamn pianica.

Went for a run yesterday and gave the new album a spin.

Didn't really click with me. It's kinda all over the place.

saw my first show this year on saturday. atmosphere was meh, like just seemed flat. new material sounds good live, but too much of it during the set. the flow of the set seems all over, though. got some good old songs, but missed the old songs that I've yet to see, two were in rotation so far this year. sigh. maybe in the next leg

Yeah I feel like the Decemberists used to vary their sets a lot more than it seems they are doing this tour. Bit of a letdown, considering I dont get to see them very often.

I'm also getting tired of the Mariner's Revenge as a closer. I see a few shows they've opened with Once in my Life and closed with Sons and Daughters, I'd MUCH rather have Sons and Daughters over Mariner's.

I'm kind of over these guys at this point. Last album I truly enjoyed was "The King Is Dead" and I thought "Hazards of Love" was pretty luke warm before that. I keep attending my local show when they come around because I want to convince myself I still love these guys but I think I'll have to accept the reality that this is no longer the band that wrote "Her Majesty the Decemberists," "Picaresque" or "The Crane Wife."

Also count me in as one who never needs to see "The Mariners Revenge Song," live again.

show monday night was pretty great for a one-off. can't complain for a $60 benefit ticket. wish bands would play sets like this in these situations, nothing entirely rare, but a very solid mix of steadily-played songs and uncommon ones

    Yankee Bayonet *with laura veirs
    Sucker's Prayer
    Legionnaire's Lament
Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect

    Lake Song

it was very nearly twenty years ago — or just under, anyway, depending on how you call it — that the decemberists, or at least a band initially called the december brides, emerged, fully formed — or at least with some of the current members, like two or three — walked on to the stage at berbati’s pan in portland, oregon and proclaimed themselves a rock ‘n’ roll band. This definitely most likely happened twenty years ago, though a clerical error in the initial logo design listing the band’s establishment as 2001 has caused confusion for — and here we go again — nearly twenty years.

In any case: We decemberists felt like this anniversary, arguably two decades as a band, could not go uncelebrated, so we thought we’d do what we do best: Go out on the road and play songs we’d written, performed, and recorded during those twenty — or nineteen at the very least — years.

And so, dear public, we present to you:

    Twenty years before the mast
    the decemberists 20th anniversary tour

with our good friends fruit bats opening the shows (with the exception of kansas city), we’ll be indulging liberally in the discography from every era of the band, from the indie to the outie, from the diy (do it yourself) days to the sedify (someone else does it for you) days — the hits, the not-so-hits, and the ones in between. Every era of colin’s facial hair will be well-represented, have no fear!

Fan pre-sale begins today at noon local time. General on-sale will follow on friday, february 14.

And, as we’ve done on recent tours, we’re offering a rarified concert experience with our whole shebang super action concert packages, which include premium reserved seats, a two-song performance and q&a with the band, and a bunch of sweet swag. Please do check them out if you’d like a little extra je ne sais quoi with your concert-going activity. These are offered at two tiers of rarefication — ensign and commandante — so you just need to decide how much you deserve either one.

Being ever-mindful that we will be embarking on this tour during an election year, we’ve partnered with plus1 so that $1 from each ticket will be donated to non-profits that are working to transform the accessibility and infrastructure around voting policy and procedure.

    See you on the road!

    Yours,
    the decemberists

yes, i saw when the email went out but was too slow to grab the VIP ticket. but after looking at the price, sheesh, i can't believe he's charging that much for a Q&A. Just hope the show is worth $20. I bought the poster to support his wife. if it was a bigger artist, probably wouldn't have been inclined.

i still have to respond to your latest PM. apologies, been so busy

“I’ll Be Your Girl” was 6 years ago already, pretty wild. I need this album to be good. That one didn’t really hit for me, honestly. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great. I liked What a Terrible World far better.
