It's more about funding his charity in while also allowing these instruments to get out into the world. While it would be great if musicians bought them and then played them regularly, like the storied life of the Peter Green Les Paul, they'll end up with investors, as museum pieces, or display pieces at a flag ship Guitar Center...kind of a shame.
Were he not using the auction to raise money for his charity, it would be cooler if they were just gifted to younger musicians that he appreciates. This would all but guarantee that they would continue to be used as tools of musical creation and expression. I'm guessing a few of the more "reasonably" priced items will end up in the hands of actual working musicians.
