Re: The Home Theater Thread

Been a while since I've been on Ants, but this is the place to go for home theater advice.

We've inherited a pretty great 60s/70s/80s vinyl collection from a relative who passed away. I've wanted to get a turntable for a while, so this is my inspiration to do so.

I have a pretty good 5.1 system now, however I've been looking to upgrade my receiver for some time (it doesn't pass through 4k to the TV).

So, looking to buy a solid turntable and a good receiver that can power a 5.1 system, an xbox, TV, and turntable and passes through 4k. I've done some research online and I'm seeing a lot of recommendations to buy a vintage turntable, although I don't have a lot of knowledge or bandwidth to fix something like that.

Looking to spend $200-350 on each if possible.

Any recs?

Did some searching today, what about these two?

I highly recommend taking a scroll through the vinyl thread. Some very knowledgeable posters with a ton of different recommendations for various price points. BTBaboon has a bunch of suggestions for different setups.

Ah, didn't realize that thread also would include setups (obvious in hindsight). Will do!

our 55" Sony mu8000 took a shit....thick green horizontal line right in the middle. Less than 3 yrs old, Samsung wont do anything in the way of a credit, so we need a new tv

Thinking of moving the 65 up to the living room and getting a new 75"

Starting researching/shopping at BB and found that all the Samung and Sony middle of the road TVs dropped from 120 refresh to 60, and now everything above that is a lot more expensive

any recs for a 75" tv around $1,000?

Hisense U6G for $999 or U7G for $1199 at Best Buy.

But I'd wait a week or two for the Super Bowl sales to come out.

If you don't mind spending a few hundred more, you could prob get a mid-teir set. And as Antiramie said, you can get the Hisense for sub $1000 today.

Can someone advise me on in wall/ceiling speakers for my setup?

We’re redoing a basement in the house we bought. It’s a narrow room, 25’ width by 12’ long (like back wall to TV wall). Previous owners had LCR in wall speakers and 2 in ceiling for 5.1 I’m assuming. In wall doesn’t make much sense to me if I go bigger than like a 45” TV as we have storage doors on the outer edges of the in walls.

Should we keep that, use traditional speakers, or some other combo? We’ll have about 12 recessed lights in there so should be able to access most of the wire later if needed.

The audiophiles will always say you want sound coming AT you rather than DOWN on you for the front stage (LCR). So floor speakers are best, then in-wall, then in-ceiling. But we have a full 5.1 in-ceiling in our living room and it's just fine. Do what looks best.

For the game/theater room we're building upstairs right now, I have the LCR in wall with the TV, two in the walls on the sides and then two rears in-ceiling for 7.1

Floor standing speakers will provide the best sound for the money. There are some good in-wall speakers, but they cost a ton and you're limited in flexibility with them. Surround speakers shouldn't be in the ceiling if you can avoid it (unless part of a Dolby Atmos setup, but that assumes you have 5 to 7 floor surround speakers first).

Theater seats or sectional/couch? We'll have two rows of seating either way. The second row will be on a platform about 6" higher than front.

That's a big debate. I think most people would say theater seats, but it's highly up to personal preference in terms of how you like to sit while watching a movie and how you like to do it with others. I have a couch simply because I had it available from our previous house. I've seriously considered getting theater seats, but it's been hard to justify the cost in my mind. The couch is comfortable and I can easily take naps on it if I want (taking a nap in the black hole of that room even when it's broad daylight outside is pretty amazing, you could be in there for an entire day and not realize how time has passed), so it's hard to justify spending a few thousand dollars to replace that. Theater chairs only allow one way to sit in them whereas a couch is much more flexible. If I was starting with no furniture available to me at all, I would probably lean toward theater chairs. However, if you have to think about how young kids or your spouse want to enjoy the room, then couches might make more sense.

Yeah, all of this is the exact debate we're having. My wife is open to whatever. I'm open to whatever. My initial gut was a really deep comfortable sectional in the front and then a regular couch or even chairs on the platform. The challenge is finding something that matches but doesn't look too cheap and gaudy but also isn't more expensive than the theater equipment itself.

Yea I think a matching combination is the best option so you have the best of both worlds. A couch/sectional in front where people can slink down on if they want and chairs in the back for more serious viewing.

My home theater was installed yesterday, just in time for BCS:

77" LG C1. Denon 960. 7.1 Surround. We went with two rows of theater seats, with the second row raised up on a platform.

Here's a selection of pics from the process: https://imgur.com/a/oGX9YU6

The room isn't entirely done. The back corner with the two lights, where the AV equipment is, that's supposed to be an A/V cabinet and beverage fridge with stone countertop. some hanging shelves on the wall. The stone countertop and backsplash my wife wants is backordered something crazy like 18 months, so rather than have half-done bar area in the back, we're going to do it all when it comes in and I just threw my old TV stand back there for now and the A/V dude wired everything into there.

Fun, I remember going through the process of getting our media room built out. Stressful trying to make all the right decisions. I'm 99% happy with mine, but I still see things I could have done a little better.

I bought this one when I got my 65" TCL in 2019 and it installed easily enough and I'm happy with it.

Looking for some help. My Yamaha TSR-8750 receiver just stopped working last night. It was working normal the night prior. In the past, an electrical surge (the house I live in has strange electrical, lights flicker, known issues, etc.) or a storm would put the receiver into protection mode, and it would show a dim red light when I'd hit the power button. At that point, I'd do the factory reset by holding down 3 buttons at once and it would always kick start it into DSP. However, now I'm getting no red light at all, no sound, nothing. I unplugged all the speakers, and relocated just the receiver to another outlet to see if she'd turn on, and nothing. Is there anything else I can try on my own before cutting my losses?

I should add, this is exactly 3 years old. Which is a total bummer if she's really dead.

Sounds like it's dead. You should get a surge protector if your house has known issues like that.

I use a surge protector, but it would never trigger during one of these 'episodes'.

Reading about replacing the capacitor now, which I guess is a known failure point for yamaha receivers.

What kind of surge protector? Maybe the protection had worn out from all the electrical issues you have?

Could be a fuse too, depending on how much it's worth to you and how much you were already thinking about upgrading, a local service center should be able to quote you on the issue for around $50.

I drove my Anthem MCA 50 up to Paradigm (60 mins up the highway) and they fixed it for $125, was a fuse on one of the amp channels. Worth it because this power amp was CDN$3800 new (I got mine at dealer cost on a trade-in as a favour)

Check your surge protector information, but I kind of thought they might only be good for one surge use and should be replaced after that. I'm not sure though since I haven't had to research it. Maybe some surge protectors are designed for more than that. I do know that not all surge protectors are actually good at preventing surges. There is a lot of crap out there and you generally need to spend more than most people expect to get a quality surge protector.
