Re: Does Dave still have a drinking problem?

There have been a few comments about Dave's use of multiple voices when speaking, many vocalists do this playfully while talking as a way to go in and out of the different voices also used when singing, it doesn't mean he is on the spectrum or drunk or anything else

Can we please just get this bullshit thread shut down already?

It’s just a weak and wildly reckless discussion that has no merit to it.

    Absolute YIKES.

Tons of pro musicians and athletes do their thing completely fucked up.. they are just that good at it.. you’re not at Dave’s level of playing.. he’s been playing and drinking since 1976…. Probably harder to play straight

All we need is for a trusted insider to simply ask Dave: do you have a drinking problem still, and by the way are you autistic? Open and shut case.

True but this has about as much traction as Dave possibly living in Japan.

    This.

I asked a Band member once if Dave was ever drunk/high while performing. He said Dave never performs under the influence. I found that difficult to believe, because I thought for SURE he was (at least) stoned at Woodstock '99. But I was assured that was not a thing, ever. Granted, I could've been lied to because people don't want to discuss the inner workings of their organization. But I doubt it. I believed him. This was also 21 years ago, so maybe things have changed. But again... highly doubt it.

He then went on to tell me stories of (a different, well-known band) who would always take acid during the '90's and play while tripping.

I mean Dave said during Butterfly in 2004 at Farmaid he had a couple whiskeys before

I think its extremley naive thinking to say he NEVER EVER has a couple drinks before the show- theyve played thousands and thousands of shows. Im sure there are shows he does, and there are others he doesnt.

Just because he has a couple drinks doesnt mean hes loaded while performing on stage, people know their limits....

Also that Dave and Friends tour Dave and Trey were pretty tipsy during the shows, including the one in 2006 at the cruise where Dave is ripping cigs on stage

We know eventually what happened with Trey

Farm Aid after hanging out with Willie and especially the cruise where it was 3am or whatever are pretty different than a four show DMB run in my opinion

True, but i mean it wasnt just the cruise.

Look at all the Dave and Trey acoustic encores on that tour- its pretty obvious

The guy is a rock star. Im sure he has a couple drinks to take the edge off before shows from time to time

Re: Does Dave still have a drinking problem?

No one in this whole discussion has provided any OFFSTAGE evidence AT ALL of any real signs of alcoholism or of Dave being on the spectrum.

How a performer acts onstage or comes across, while sometimes sure s/he may have been drinking or high or acting in a way some fans would think was "not normal", ALL of that is still onstage and I've been around enough bands and artists pre-show, during the show, and then after the same show to know that some artists truly just become other beings when they're onstage.

I'm not saying Dave is faking it or "transforms into another being" onstage, but performing is performing, it can bring other things out in people that you wouldn't see offstage, and also it can mean some people have a "persona" they become because that's how they put on a good show.

No one has claimed any evidence or stories of any behaviors offstage that speak to alcoholism or autism, so to me, both of these speculative roads people are headed down in this convo are pure 100% speculation with zero actual evidence. No one can reasonably walk away thinking they strongly believe he's either.

Maybe you all should worry about your own lives and leave Dave’s private life to him and his family. Idle gossip helps no one and isn’t fair to Dave. So shut the f up!

Re: Does Dave still have a drinking problem?

There are interviews (print and video) or Dave alluding to:
    1. Drinking a lot and believing some folks likely feel it's too much
    2. The he has two personas
    a. Dave, namesake of the Dave Matthews Band, the performer that he presents and we see on stage, and
    b. David, him in real life...the man, son, brother, husband, father, and friend...

I think the one where he wears a gorilla mask through part of it has him stating both in the space of the clip that's circulated on YT. That video is more than a decade old I think. As to performing under the influence...it's widely known that he and Trey were at least drunk at some point during several of those shows. If you need proof, watch the videos...

dave has most likely rarely played drunk, if ever. Maybe an encore or soemthing? Buzzed ? Sure. But playing buzzed isnt more difficult. Its like playing pool for some people, you actually get better. Cause you lose the nervea of playing in front of people. And Id highly doubt that alcohol would even be daves first choice as a side kick on stage. There are far better options.

https://youtu.be/rhLmMAfAHeU anybody other than dave id say they were drunk here. But dave just has that personality on camera where people are wondering what he is on. Its been a topic ever since they started playing. dave doesnt have a drinking problem. Drinking before the show, during the show, if he were to do that, theres nothing wrong with it.
