Busted Stuff is really not that good and this album is light years better than it. Maybe the songs themselves aren't as good, but as far as production and quality goes, this album kills it. I can't even remember the last night I actually listened to BS. The songs on BS are great, but they were produced terribly and as a result they sound like shit on that record. I also think the music is better and much more complex on this album as well. Basically the only thing BS has going for it is the lyrics, but I'll take music over lyrics any day.

I completely disagree......I love BS. It was the first studio album I ever bought and it is still one of my favorites. I see nothing wrong with the production on that album. Apparently I'm in in the minority on that, but whatever.

In my opinion the songs on busted stuff are absolutely better than the songs on AFTW (both musically and lyrically). I would agree that the production is better on AFTW, but quality song writing is more important to me than quality production since great studio production does not mean the songs excel in a live setting.

I personally agree.. The production is different than Lillywhite's, but I never think of the mix/ production as being bad. It certainly doesn't trump the quality of the songs themselves.

That being said, Captain was absolutely ruined IMO. TLWS version is incredible..

I really feel like comparing them is unfair. I grew up eating pizza, and wasn't introduced to Thai food until my 20s. I absolutely love both now, but Thai could never unseat pizza as my favorite food. It has been a part of me for too long. This is how I honestly feel about those 90s songs. Just because I will never be able to say that I like Snow Outside more than Say Goodbye doesn't take anything away from this album, which I think is phenomenal.

I love Dave's lyrics on this... Some very mature stuff with a very strong underlying sense of hope.

    Completely agree...

Just thinking that the "whole damn life" lyric in The Riff works better than the "whole fucking life" line. It just fits better, he doesn't have to sing it so rushed to keep up with the music.

Couple listens later and some more thoughts...

    1. Belly Belly Nice and Rooftop should be in consideration for the second single. Has one already been chosen? Anything's better then Mercy.

    2. The Riff still isn't doing it for me. It's gotten better after several plays, but there's something I'm not crazy about.

    3. I personally like If Only just for it's laid back, jazzy feel. Very Sugar Willish to me, which should make many of you happy.

    4. Belly Full should've been saved or cut for another time/b-sides. I like it, but it breaks the flow up pretty bad. Much more so then Sweet.

More of a reader than a poster, but after I took a few listens to AFTW I wanted to chime in with my thoughts. As said by many, I think this is easily the best album since Lillywhite / Busted Stuff (putting together since it was nearly all one writing session). The whole record has such a great flow that has been missing since Lillywhite left after the LS. This whole process from tour debuts to singles and now the full stream has given me so much hope for where things can go with DMB in the future.

    Current thoughts on songs:

    1 - Drunken Soldier
    2 - Belly Full
    3 - Snow Outside
    4 - Belly Belly Nice
    5 - Rooftop
    6 - Sweet
    7 - Broken Things
    8 - Mercy
    9 - Gaucho
    10 - If Only
    11 - The Riff

Another note, Dave's chorus vocal ('Don't waste time' in particular) in Drunken Soldier bothers the crap outta me. It's a little weak, with not much depth behind it. They should've cleaned it up or had some backing vocals behind it.

The Gaucho into Sweet transition is really making me warm up to Sweet. It's such a badass transition. I hated Sweet at first and now I'm liking it more and more every listen, it really fits where it's placed and is a great tempo change. It also makes The Riff stand out more.

Busted Stuff has songs that are better songs on it. If you look at it that way, Busted Stuff is going to have an edge on this album. But AFTW has much better production, and more importantly, it is a 55 minute piece of artwork. Each song flows into the next intentionally and often beautifully. The mellow nature of this album, and in many cases, the lack of lyrics (as opposed to earlier albums being criticized for having too many lyrics) creates an atmosphere that connects the whole album. That's what unifies this album and really, from this perspective, gives it an edge over Busted Stuff.

And for those who initially dislike the lyrics - keep in mind, Dave has made a concerted effort to say more with less words in the last several albums. This album, for me, connected lyrically and musically, and I can't wait to listen to it from start to finish again!

The problem is that tLWS leaked. To many, even the unfinished versions of those songs are superior to the "finished" versions on BS. For my part, I usually throw on tLWS when I want to listen to studio versions of those songs. If tLWS never leaked, it is likely that BS would be more appreciated.

This and the fact that it came off the heels of ED. If none of the tracks had been heard before, it would have come across as a hallelujer chorus to the fan base.

Though, I started intensely listening to DMB right when BS came out and it took me awhile to really appreciate it even without having herad tLWS before.

The problem with Busted Stuff is it completely lacks emotion and contains neutered versions of Captain and BEF. Seriously, the damn record sounds like it's on a sedative, it was such a going through the motions album. Those songs will always be Lillywhite Sessions songs to me (outside of YNK obviously, WAYG is pretty average so I'm not bringing it into discussion).

AFTW blows BS out of the water, hell BW blows Busted Stuff out of the water as an album
