SAWG is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. I can't believe Dave Matthews wrote it. The same man who wrote Crush, IBYU, Lover Lay Down, Recently, Two Step, and other love songs like that, also wrote SAWG. It doesn't fucking make sense and it angers me.

just goes to show that, without someone pushing them to do their best. the band is lazy.

fuck this album - i can even appreciate everyday for what it was - a COMPLETELY OPPOSITE ENERGY to the sessions with steve. however, you still have to put some work into songwriting.

a truly great artist should be able to reinvent himself (themselves) as their careers grow. many artists both musical and visual have done that, if he is to be considered a great, shouldn't he be able to do that?

I don't expect him to. But I do expect to see that he put forth a real effort to make good music, and I don't see that at ALL with Stand Up.

of course, but bob dylan's catalog far surpasses that of the dave matthews band. and despite his mediocre work, he has eventually come back to creating great music. modern times, while not his best, is nothing to scoff at and was created over 40 years after some of his best work, if not some of the best work in rock history. the same cannot be said for the dave matthews band in the past 6+ years and only time can tell if they can put out another great piece, which at this point is highly suspect.

i think once the band is done we'll being seeing some really great solo work from dave, that might become some of the greatest songs he ever wrote

The problem is not the songs themselves, but the production choices. As an album, looping, sampling and the electronic synth elements are just wrong for DMB. If they hadn't relied on those production techniques, it could have turned out much better.

Largely, many of the songs could stand some lyrical help, but it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, IMO. I think if the music were better, most people would forgive the lyrics.

yeah i agree, if they produced the songs how they played them live it would have been fine, like wtf did they do with hello again...anyways if they had carter not use the machine 10 times better which both of these could have been changed very easily and...

in my opinion i dont mind any of the lyrics i love SAWG and SAO55th....but if it wasnt for the china lyric persay i think that song would be loved by most people....and if carter does happen to use the machine again i say we banish batson from the vaccinity of the band

The production is only one of many problems with Stand Up. Even Lillywhite couldn't have made those songs worth a shit.

    Re: What a bad album.

I love American Baby, Hunger for the Great Light, Out of my Hands & You Might Die Trying.

I can stomach Smooth Rider, Stand Up, Dreamgirl, Old Dirt Hill, Louisiana Bayou & Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd.

The rest are garbage. ABI is much better live. Everybody Wake Up has a great beginning but everything else about it blows. SAWG is one of the band's five worst songs. Trouble with You and Joyride should have made the album instead of SAWG and EWU.

And I'm not even going to elaborate on the abortion Hello Again became.

He doesn't have to top them or even come close. He just needs to write songs that don't blow in every way.

I think the band will be fine.

Everyone forgets how talented they are. When they are in the right place to write great music again, I have complete confidence they will.

This is a new outlook for me, but as a musician and songwriter, I am starting to understand where dave and the band is. They are just in a transitional period - adding influences and synthesizing new ideas. The fact that this CD is on hold is great news - they want to make something great and not rush things this time. Awesome.

I hope the idea of you doesn't even make the cut for the new album next year - how cool would that be? Not even put a tune like that on the album because they have so much other great material...
