It's incredibly dated at times but the story and character building, arcs and themes, and the modern day "anti-hero" that is Tony Soprano is the clear basis for quite literally the best television characters ever in Walter White, Don Draper, Vic Mackey, etc.

I remember gathering at a friends house with 10 people in college, no phones allowed, for sopranos
looking back now, the show might not be as good as others that have come after it, but it paved the way for the antihero in all mediums. I think The Shield was the bridge to bring dark, violent stuff to cable. Looking back now the production value and acting aren't always great, but there's no Mad Men or Breaking Bad without The Shield
