Re: Best DMB studio album One-Two punch

The "commercial" between The Stone and Crush has been my ringtone (on the rare occasion I am not on vibrate only) for years.

Monkey Man is terrific. Thought provoking, haunting, musically/ lyrically interesting, plus the LWS rawness adds to it

It was going to be really strong lyrically.

Also, Carters work was just as good as Rois. Carters quiet drumming towards the end their in the background behind all of Rois floating notes was just awesome.
As good as Roi and Carter are on this, Stefan is so tasty here with his subtle pops. And the lyrics, damn. It’s one of their most progressive numbers, almost has some early Rush elements to it

I still feel like Monkey Man is a Top 5 wasted song for them. It had such a cool vibe to it and I feel like they could have really jammed it out at the end there. I wish I knew why it was axed.
They intro and verse section for So Right are rhythmically and harmonically close (although not melodically). Obviously it goes into different chorus and bridge sections, so I think it might be considered done or too similar...especially since they’ve never played it. It’s more defunct and almost a no-song at this point.

Possibly. If so, I find that to be a waste.

I will say I've always felt like Dive In later became the fleshed out idea of the last verse of Monkey Man.

Monkey Man riff totally became the So Right riff. MM is much much better, but I'm glad it at least wasn't entirely abandoned. Kind of like Hold Me Down in Cigarette Lit.

Also, dmbnut, I can see a resemblance between some of the MM lyrics and Dive In, at least thematically. I actually really like Dive In.

In terms of best two sequential album songs for me it's The Dreaming Tree > Pig.

In terms of "punch" like impact of energy of songs I'd probably go with BOWA > WWYS. Crash has so many energetic songs but usually have a low energy track separating them. DIDO > LYD > Graves > Cry > Billies > Monkey, up down up down up down

Stone » Crush is the easy answer, obviously as good as it gets. Other than that I think Snow Outside » Drunken Soldier is wonderful.

In terms of what songs blend together well as a one-two, I'd have to think about it. In terms of favorite songs that happen to be back to back, I'd say The Last Stop and Don't Drink The Water.
