It took me a long time to find any emotion other than fun/faux darkness/goofiness inside the Phish world but it's there and it's very very good.
Still, and I say this having just finished the Hampton run and probably putting them as my top act to see right now..Phish doesn't pull off the melancholy feel that I'm drawn to the most, in music. The whole vibe is a bit surreal and detached...(not necessarily a bad thing)
Sometimes, I liken the Ph crowd to sad clowns only pretending to "vibrate in love and light". Occasionally, I've left a Phish show feeling a bit hollow despite the party atmosphere and true dedication phans have towards the music.
The Dead seems to have that range of emotion thing figured out perfectly. But Dead Co suffers from the same crowd DMB pulls, albeit to a lesser extent.

DMB use to nail the melancholy feel and weaved it in nicely with love/happiness, contemplation of life, and fun. I'm not sure what messed with their algorithm..whether it's the band's choices or the crowd that shows up these days but there's definitely a disconnect between a lot of fans and DMB and it sucks.
Seems like when they're on the right track in my mind, they jump off and "180 it" to appease another section of the fanbase..A couple things that stand out from the last five years that have pissed me off...
Summer 2013 had variety, some bust outs..no tour since has come close on either.
Then..I've said this a million times on here, but in regards to the sound of the band moving forward, I thought the acoustic sets were amazing. Sure, they could've used more variety in 2014 but all of my gripes with the horn section were gone. Loved Stefan on the stand up bass, Carter's smaller kit. and getting Tim on acoustic.
That's the type of DMB I enjoy..and why they abandoned it completely baffles me..I thought the band was loving it, evolving and maturing with it. And the only thing that possibly could've derailed it was disengaged, loud, not there for the music, fans.
This is longer than I meant it to be..I'm not 100% sure what OP's Thread Title means but I do think the different fragments of this fan base have messed with the band's output
