Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

Dave’s guitar absolutely now ruins any solo/D&t shows and has really hurt the live band shows. When will someone tell him the sound is beyond garbage?

How does the DMB store run out of Firedancer stickers? Furthermore, how does it take them so long to restock them? You would think they would have more of a surplus of those than anything else.

Curious to know as well because I am in the same camp. Rockbridge obviously makes great guitars but I feel like Dave's SJ is too jangly and gets lost in the mix. The Martin is perfect for D+T shows but I preferred his Taylor 914ce with the full band. Never truly embraced the sound post 2012ish with the Rockbridge. Again I have read a ton on their little shop and the relationship Dave has with Brian Calhoun and there are many outstanding artists that use Rockbridge on stage but for Dave's songs and signature sound I miss the Taylor. Curious to hear from the OP!

Yeah, I’m not a Rockbridge fan so was wondering if that’s what he was alluding to or if it was something else.

Thought his guitar sounded great the last couple years. He’s finally back in the mix.

I heard an interview where Dave talked about Busted Stuff. It's not that he doesn't like the song, he just thinks there is something "off" about it now. He talked about how they couldn't recapture the way the song sounded in 2000, 2002; and he can't figure out what it is. So he gave up. That was in a full band setting. Everything is different when it's just Dave and Tim.

I could be wrong but haven't you stated multiple times you haven't been to a show since 2015? If so, kind of a moot point, no?

I wish I knew the names of some of the people I met at random tailgates back in 2003-2007 in the Tinley Park, Alpine, Noblesville areas.

Yea, you helped get an under 21-year-old incredibly drunk - but damn those were some good times (I think).

Has anyone listened to 2000/2002 versions to try to figure out what the difference is? I think he mentions (IEM) that the difference is more in the end than the rest of the song?

I'd have to say it might have something to do with whatever Roi or butch did. There were some great versions in 2000, maybe the first time sexy mf was used as an outro not sure, but they were jazzy and good. When it came back in 2010 it didn't sound right.

The real question is why couldn’t the musical director figure it out?

If I had to guess , because he's part of the problem. It's similar to sugar will from 04, roi, butch and carter really carry it and keep that old school jazzy jam going. Busted stuff won't work if a trumpet is blaring and Tim is shredding. If it were muted and Tim was playing fills, it could work.

I think it was played slower in 2000, so it gave it more space to breathe if that makes sense.

I think what Dave was saying was that something was lost from it even in 2002. The difference in 2010 is extremely obvious with the main riff being played only on electric guitar and not suiting the song at all.

Release more ‘00 LTs. If it never regains its magic in ‘00, so be it. At least we’ll have the ‘00 recordings.

His sound now is so muddy and dull it’s almost unlistenable. Granted I don’t download shows anymore and my experiences are limited what I hear on Sirius but I just heard GGT from MX the other day and it was truly awful. The lack of projection and overall dead sound coming from his guitar is pathetic for a professional. He/Tim/the rest of the band must know this.

That may be over the top but I for sure agree that it's been a downgrade going to Rockbridge. Small maker / bespoke guitars does not necessarily equal better sound. Always seemed like more of a fashionable "shop local" choice than anything, and they sound good enough. Maintaining the current unburied volume in the mix, and bringing back the scratched up Taylor would be best.

Agreed… this topic has been discussed a ton, and I feel like a majority agree that the Rockbridge is the worst sounding of all his guitars. The Martin is perfect for D&T and the 914 is perfect for full band. I even prefer the Martin full band from LS, but I think as the band continued to grow and incorporate more layers of sound, the Taylor’s high end cuts through the wall of sound very nicely.

Busted Stuff was also only played 19 of 47 times Summer 2000, and wasn't played in Fall or 2001 like Grey St. Bartender, Grace, JTR. It's not like there's a ton of evidence that they loved it and they thought it was a great concert song then all of a sudden it was worse in 2002 even before he said Fuck Busted Stuff at Shoreline. I haven't heard that IEM in a while, but doesn't he say "fuck that song it goes nowhere?"
